Gray may have a spot on Shanahan's staff
In Mike Shanahan's last season with the Denver Broncos, Bob Slowik served as his defensive coordinator. Slowik is expected to be part of Shanahan's first Redskins staff, probably as the secondary coach, a league source said.
As for who will serve as Shanahan's first defensive coordinator, several players have said they would not be surprised if secondary coach Jerry Gray were retained and promoted to the role. Gray has told people in the organization he is optimistic about joining Shanahan, team sources said.
Before former coach Jim Zorn was fired, owner Daniel Snyder interviewed Gray, which put the team in compliance with the Rooney Rule. Gray's decision to interview in secrecy for a job Zorn still occupied stirred friction within the coaching staff. Gray in conversations with Zorn and members of the staff denied he interviewed, said people with knowledge of the situation.
But a high-ranking member of the Fritz Pollard Alliance confirmed that Gray, on multiple occasions, said he interviewed for the Zorn's job. Gray repeatedly declined reporters' requests to provide clarity about his actions.
Although Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer also is considered a top candidate to lead the defense for Shanahan, it is not believed Shanahan personally spoke with Zimmer before accepting the Redskins' job. But if Zimmer does leave Cincinnati for Washington, his son, Adam, also might join him on the staff.
Adam is a defensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints. With New Orleans, Adam's "responsibilities include both opponent and self-scouting reports, playbook design, film breakdown and organizing meetings, as well as assisting during practicing," according to the Saints' website.
As for other potential additions, former Broncos standout wide receiver Steve Watson might have a role. And front-office official Jim Goodman, who has previously worked with Shanahan, could have a position in the reorganized football operation.
Kyle Shanahan, according to a Houston Texans source, is packing now to leave Houston and join the Redskins

Haynesworth would actually most likely be a DE in a 3-4 scheme (Big Al was great when occasionally moved to end with the Titans)

Sorry, but that's ridiculous. Haynesworth is 350 pounds, which, even for a 3-4 is far too big for a DE. Take the Chargers for example, a 3-4 team. Their starting DE's are 290 and 295, respectively. The Steelers, another 3-4 team, have a 285 pound and a 298 pound defense ends. The only 3-4 defensive end that I could find that even comes close to Haynewsworth's size is Igor Olshansky of the Cowboys and he is 35 pounds lighter than Big Al.

The primary role of a DT in a 4-3 is to soak up blockers, and occupy holes. The primary role of the NT AND the DE's in a 3-4 is to soak up blockers and occupy holes.

Tell me why it would matter whether Haynesworth is over the Center or over a Tackle in a 3-4. From either postition, he would still be devastating when in the game. Personally, I don't believe that we have the personnel for a 3-4, which is designed to feature the linebackers...

I think we have the DT and maybe 1-2 LBs for a 3-4. But I don't see a single DE on our roster, outside of Orakpo, who would be a force in the 3-4. Maybe a much younger Daniels.

Haynesworth would be fine, I think, in a 3-4. He'd complain a lot, probably, but the man is a talent and could adjust to the new role fine.

Still, I'd hate to see us switch. This line is a classic 4-3 build, and I agree with you that we don't have the LBs to pull off the switch.

Orakpo would be a LB in a 3-4 and a damn good one too I feel (think James Harrison, Demarcus Ware). I actually think we have decent personnel for this scheme however we are missing 2 important pieces which are a NT and a second inside backer (maybe Blades could fill it but i'm not that high on him in a 3-4). If you think Haynesworth would be a 3-4 NT then i think you would be wrong, he couldn't stand our scheme this year with the way we used him and I don't see him wanting to be a NT holding the line in a 3-4. He wants to get after the QB and that's why he'd be a better fit if we were to run a 3-4 at DE. If we could find a NT, an inside backer and either bring Philip Daniels back for one DE spot or find someone else to play the run tough i think we'd be o.k.

Where does Rocky fit it? Couldn't he play ILB?

I really don't think it matters much what defense these guys decide to play so long as we have coaches that can both game plan and ensure that they have the players who can execute that game plan together - the players need to be both coached to execute the play the way the coaches want them to or know that they will not be on the field - accountability has been lacking here

we are very lucky that we presently have a decent mix of old and young very talented defensive players - the problem has been that the game planning and execution has not been even remotely effective - players are not held accountable and the game planning defensively by the DC left a lot to be desired

the keys to a successful team are very basic - be able to run the ball whenever you want to AND be able to stop the other team's drives in the 4th quarter - we have not been close to being able to do either

I feel you are right. I do not want him though. I'd rather have Zimmer in charge.

Gray is ambitious and he is a pick made by Danny. He has nothing to do with Bruce Allen or Mike Shanahan.

Zimmer will be the choice. The Bengals won't pay big bucks to keep him.
