Joe Gibbs DECIDED who would call plays. Jim Zorn had the right and responsibility to make that decision removed away from him.
Not so quick..
Al Saunders was brought in...I ask by who??
Remember the fiascothat followed of who was calling the plays??
I made the argument that this isn't the place for new HC to start their career of course I was bashed for that...but IMO it's just not a good place for new HC.

I admit to a degree of ignorance here, but I find myself wondering how Dan Snyder found success in business? What businesses has he built, and how? Is he a classic entrepreneur, who has relied largely on his own wits, judgement and a degree of good fortune to get to where he is? Or has he built successful businesses by establishing sound organisations, employing good people to do what they are good at, and planning for the future?
If he is employing the same methods for success to run the Redskins as he did in his other ventures, then I am inclined to think that his business model of choice is "I'm in charge - this whole organisation is about my ambitions and goals, I've got the ideas, and the skills and determination to make it happen". "And I don't need anybody's help".
Even then, I find it hard to believe that he has never had a strategy in business. But under Snyder, the Redskins have lacked anything remotely resembling a strategy. Strategy is informed by having a vision, a mission, a coherent concept of what you want to achieve, and the principles you will employ to make that happen. I have experience of working for an organisation for whom strategy appears to be reinvented on a monthly basis. Constant shifting of priorities, core goals and beliefs is no way to build consistent success.
And so the club lurches from old school Schottenheimer to the old ball coach, to Gibbs 2 and then to west coast. It ricochets like a pinball between unrestricted free agent splurges, to restricted free agent splurges, to committing to the draft as the way ahead, and to building a group of "core Redskins", and then back to splurges.
Consistent success requires strategy. The fact that Snyder doesn't have one suggests to me that he never had one in business either, and just got lucky, or that he is strangely naive enough to think that nobody else in the NFL is doing things the right way. How an obviously talented and intelligent individual can sit there, and see the results achieved by clubs such as the Steelers, Ravens, Patriots, Colts and Giants, without ever once thinking that THEY might actually be doing things in a better way than him, is simply baffling to me.
For the love of all that's burgundy and gold, Dan - observe your competitors! Watch, learn, and understand that their way is the right way. Your way isn't working, never has, and is destined to fail forever. Hire competent people to do the jobs they are good at, and do not tolerate incompetence.
In short: sack Vinny, hire a professional, and leave well alone - except when you are given cheques to sign.

This isn't the totality of his pre-Redskins business ventures, but when I looked up Snyder Communications, I found two words we all love:
junk mail
telemarketing
Yup. His was one of those companies calling you at dinnertime to sell you new aluminum siding -- sometimes without even knowing you live in an apartment.

And, just like those companies, he's been irritating the life out of me ever since.
