one of 3 things if he gets signed

we plan on releasing collins
we plan on releasing colt because zorn thinks he has no future
I would have to go with releasing Collins.. he's going to be 38 in November and was really only on the team because he knew Al Saunders' offense.
I must admit. For years I was susupicious of Campbell's ability to lead and releasing/ trading him for a needed 2nd rd draft pick is a good move. However If it is true that by signing Leftwich and releasing Colt Brennan somehow makes us a better team IS pot-head logic. A 6th rd gift in 2008. Legendary collegiate resume. Obviously proficient in the spread version of the west-coast offense. He is also 25yr old. Our very own J. Cutler. Dont sleep on a potential franchise Qb. With a fair competing role in the 2009 preseason, Brennan is our Star.

what happened to the love for Campbell as our QB and how good a QB he was going to be this year and for the near future?
As CLL pointed out - the writing is on the wall here as far as Campbell's future is concerned - he might be here for this year but if we get any decent offers for him he's out of here.
I do not think this FO thinks as much of Collins as some here (coughRaycough) and are looking at a possible backup but I wonder if it is not a better idea to look to our future QB with next year's crop - we really need a future HOF at RT or a future HOF DE with that 13th pick.
Vinny understands and he better produce. I really hope Snyder is looking to add draft picks here because, in my opinion, he can trade almost anyone on this team if he can pick up a couple of second round picks this year

We won't be able to trade Campbell next year. He'll be an FA and we'll get zip.

I hear you crazyhorse but sf55 has been intimating that Campbell is going to make such a great showing here this season that we'll signing him to be our QB for a few more years.
I just do not think some people have looked and thought about the ramifications of what happened here. Let's say Campbell makes us think he's a HOF QB this year (stop laughing and just try and follow me) - he's sure to remember how he was treated and will want a gazillion dollars and then will most likely be the QB we have seen the last 2 years

A lot of people on here have been sounding like Republicans as of late, "I hope the President fails." Campbell doesn't appear to be going anywhere and whether anyone likes it or not our teams success rides on this mans shoulders.

I don't know Campbell personally, but I honestly think he wants to be the best QB he can be for the Redskins (whether that's going to be good enough or not is to be determined), despite the recent events. Fortunately, not everyone thinks about performing one year to get paid and then slack off the rest. I'd like to think some players actually care about their "legacy" while playing.

Leftwitch sucks!
Leftwitch may have a stronger arm. But, Collins is far and away a better player. Not worth getting rid of a vet like Collins who has proven his worth to pick up Jacksonvilles and Pittsburgs garbage player.

Collins is old. He may be low mileage, but he's old. He's got no downfield arm. He's got a quicker release than JC, but that's about all he has over JC. I think that Leftwich for Collins is a smart safe move. Leftwich has starting experience (more than 5 games in the past decade IIRC) and it's a good move. Could also be good for JC as a black QB mentorship.

No to byron, he's not that good. Brennan #2 and draft another QB (Sanchez?)

That's not our glaring need to drop a 1st round pick on. I wouldn't be opposed to Sanchez, but it's still not my ideal draft strategy. I want an immediate contributor at RT and a 2nd day pick has a slim chance at that. Sanchez wouldn't fare very well on his back, just as JC didn't.

I agree VSF - if we can find a future great RT we have to do this at #13 - I'm sure we are going to be looking at getting our future great QB shortly but the most imortant thing in the next couple of years is going to be replacing this line as quickly as possible.
The future great QB will have time to develop and by the time he's ready to go we will have a dominant, young, offensive line to go with a defense that hopefully stays in the top 5 with some quality additions also.
Cerrato has to really show everyone that he can handle his job.

...and he has "passed" on us, as already noted by myself in other threads and others in this one.
This is not reason enough to pick him up, but I agree with the consensus that Collins is a system QB...and essentially a fish out of water now.

There is an intangible that you look for in a back-up quarterback... an ability to make things happen and win games in relief of the starter. Leftwich, as we became painfully aware last season, has this intangible in droves.
I don't know that he'll ever be a starter again, but he sure does have the ability to hurt teams that haven't been able to game plan for him.
Isn't that what you want a backup to do?
Then there is the fact that he could not master the Jag's attempt to run a WC type offense. What to do?
I say grab him... he's not the future, but nor is Collins... and Leftwich has more upside.

I really don't understand this but whatever...
So we're signing a QB who basically has the same problems as Jason. LOLOLOL

If you say so... from my perspective, however, they are not the same at all. First of all, I think they would look for Leftwich to push Campbell. If Campbell doesn't respond to the challenge and find his mojo, this is a failure.
Second, you want your backup to have a solid shot at winning some games for you. Among the things that I have consistently fretted about with Jason is his apparent lack of urgency... he is the same at all times... and he does not seem to have the ability to step it up when the game is on the line.
Despite Leftwich's inability to secure a starting job, we all know that he can demonstrate that "fire in the belly" that seems to evade our man, Jason. Leftwich, in other words, can make things happen. He knows how to adlib. While you may not want to build a gameplan that way, it's a good skill to have when the world is falling apart around you... or when you've come into the game in the 3rd quarter, because the starter went down.
I don't think that's a bad thing to have in your back-up.

i think you are all way off. I think we signed him knowing that he will never see the field. JCs gonna start all season. He is a replacement for Todd because he is old. We will not get rid of our hawiian friend, he needs to hold a clipboard somemore to have any value.
really in the end this is danny giving leftwich a place for his career to die. he'll sit on the bench this year and when we figure out what happens to JC (or whoever we bring in for 2010) he will continue to ride the pine.
hes just a younger TC, a younger bench warmer

I gotta agree with Trey.
After seeing how easily Leftwich lit us up last year (when we had the fouth ranked defense in the league) I wouldn't say he's a total waste of time.
I wouldn't want him as the starter; but as a backup? Sure.
I wouldn't spend a lot on him, and he may be asking for too much. That could be why the Steelers didn't make him an offer, and why it's been three days and we haven't heard an announcement about the Redskins picking him up.

Plus, right after I posted...I went over to the wire services to see what the contract was. The last couple posters had me thinking it was a done deal.
It isn't. He simply worked out, as many do, and left.

If there's one thing the Redskins have proved over the past 20 years its that all we need to do to improve this team and win a lot of games is sign an aging, retread QB.
Its amazing that more teams haven't followed our formula for success.

Leftwich
Sanchez
Brennan

I don't think things need to be so absolute in April. You have three QB's, but you recognize Leftwich as a value in free agency. No one has signed him and he may be available for a relative bargain contract. That situation should always be interesting to an FO, no matter who is already on the roster. So it's simply exploratory. Let's see what Leftwich wants and go from there.
If he does get signed, then you have 4 QB's to compete in camp. No need to release anyone yet. Not a great chance that Sanchez falls to 13, but you never know. By having Leftwich as insurance, maybe drafting Sanchez and trading JC becomes more a possibility. Maybe you include JC in a trade to Jax, SF or Buf so you can move ahead of Denver to pick Sanchez? These are all options that would be easier to pursue knowing that the worst case scenario is Leftwich as starter in 2009.

I do not believe that Denver is using either of their picks on an offensive player - they will be looking to improve that defense
I do not believe we are looking for a QB this year - we need to start getting an offensive line together - ideally we would love to find 4 young offensive line starters in the next 2 years
I just think it is too early to bring in another young QB. Right now I believe we are just trying to improve our backup QB situation - if we do sign Leftwich.

Eactly! Getting an exact carbon copy of JC has to be one of the most retarded things ever.
If the team wants to get a good backup why not get Jeff Garcia who has shown that he can be very successful in the WCO?? That would make too much sense.
