Or the Staff has no clue what they are doing, and they are guessing based upon gut feelings, which I hate. C'mon. They kept Tryon over Mason? And, they are guessing. Almost none of this coaching staff has had this responsibility before. I really hope I'm wrong but my Spidey Sense is tingling, and it's telling me the Redskins should have kept Mason and McMullen, and probably Mix.

Oh no! We don't have Mason McMullen or Mix, Our Season is Doomed!

Seriously how passionate can we get about these cuts, I doubt any one of em gets picked up now that I think about it. I think other teams say "wow that guy couldn't make the skins, he must suck" do I think that is justified no, but in any case it is what it is.

Much more concerned with failure of 2 outta 3 of our first picks.

mcmullen should've made the team. mcmullen hs has experience in the west coast offense and proved valuable in the preseason. i hope devin thomas and malcolm kelly prove that they were worth the 2nd round picks.

Welcome to the Vinny and Zorn Era!!!!!!

You are officially seeing the last remnants of the Gibbs led-teams.

Keeping all 10 draft picks??? That seems more like a rejuvenation and a purge, than good football sense.

It absolutely makes sense, I'm afraid. The team is now in rebuilding mode, while hoping to have enough talent to make some sort of a post season bid. This is clearly a youth movement, with the likely plan to address foundational positions in next year's draft.

Had it been otherwise, they'd have kept a few more of the journeyman type players (such as McMullen & Boschetti), who could clearly contribute, but perhaps not with big numbers.

I am absolutely surprised that Tryon made it, however... I thought Richardson had simply outperformed him.... OK, well frankly, I thought he stunk up the place against 3rd string talent. Is that better?

The Redskins can't even seem to get that right.
If you're going to binge, then binge.
If you're going to purge, then purge.
Doing either one half-way is a recipe for disaster.

You can't go all out in today's NFL, with the salary cap. It takes several years to make a rebuilding effort work now.

Agree.

I would be really nervous if I were Jason Campbell.

You're totally correct. We suck at everything. You should find a better team to follow. Write when you find work.

:hmm: What about just picking the 53 you want to keep? Or am I overanalyzing?

This isn't rocket science.
If you're going to purge, cut everyone above the $2.5 Million median.

It's too late to do that now but let's say they do it your way at the end of this season.
9 players will make $2,500,000 or more in base salary next year
Some have allocated cap money spread as far as 2012, it all becomes due when they are purged from the roster. The Redskins already have $6,629,000 in dead cap for next year. You just added $30,022,000 by releasing 9 guys based on their pay regardless of what they added to the team.

GSPODS wrote:That is @ $116,750,000.00 per team divided by 51 salaries (the bottom two don't count against the cap, TMK)
Eat the dead cap until you have all $116 Million or so of cap space, and start rebuilding.

Since we are talking 2009 let's say the cap would be $123,000,000 or so (it jumps about $7M per year) That's the unadjusted number what happens this year will effect the final number next year. The Skins trun number this year was $118,550,260

GSPODS wrote:Purging requires cutting everyone who is over (paid) or (aged)
If you're going to binge, spend all $116+ Million and then have the lawyers find the loopholes to get around the cap ceiling.
Binging requires max veteran contracts for top free agent acquisitions at the key positions, QB, RB, WR1, DE, CB, possibly others.

By aged I'll use the ever popular round figure of 30. Thats nine more gone and another $16,589,000 added to the dead cap because you fell they are old again no accounting for how they perform. Not sure what a Max Veteran contract is but you might want to get those lawyers started on looking for those loopholes. You still have have 2 WR, 2 TE, 4 S, 3 RB, 2 QB, 2 OL 2 LB 1 DT, 6 DE, and 2 corners under contract for 2009 and $41,118,000 in cap space. You'll need to replace the your 2 starting corners, a starting DE and DT, your top 3 wideouts, starting LB and MLB, a blocking TE and a full back. Pete Kendall isn't under contract next year and I'm pretty sure he won't be re-signing consideringg the rest of the O-line got caught up in the purge, so you'll need five starter for the O-line. Don't forget Evans, Doughty, Fabini, Geisinger, Albright, Campbell, Fincher, Suisham, Golston, Montgomery, Torrence are also not under contract and they'll need to be dealt with. So you'll start with a core of 27 players (if you include the two currently on IR) and $35,271,000 in cap space to fill out the roster

GSPODS wrote:In order to binge, you have to purge first under the salary cap era.
The Redskins did the exact opposite, Binge first, Purge second.
That is why they are behind the youthful talent acquisition eight ball.

My 2 cents

The Skins currently have 29 players 26 or younger and 16 30 or holder. What ratio are you looking for? If you really need some help with this give me a call at 603-413-4133 and I'll help you out

Arguing cap issues with 1NIKSDER is a lost cause.
All I'll say is that it looks like 2010 will be an uncapped year.
So, if the Redskins are going to purge, purge now, and binge in 2010.
The Redskins are going to eat dead cap no matter which of those 9 players above the $2.5M median they cut. That's their problem and their fault. The Danny made his bed.

The ratio I am looking for is the 16 players 30 and older who are eating a disproportionate amount of the cap space to be gone. Cut the dead weight, eat the dead cap, and look towards 2010. Get everyone still on the roster on the same page and playing as a cohesive unit for the next two seasons, and build a youthful, long-term, perpetual winning team.
There is no rule of law that says that players have to be expensive to be talented. Nor is there any law that says that players past their positional primes should all play for the Redskins. Unless that is the Law Of The Danny. Cerrato's Law?

All I was getting at is that the Redskins should do one or the other.
They tried the binge method, and all they got was this lousy dead cap.
So, it might be time to go the purge method.
But going half-assed in either direction builds a weiner, not a winner.
The sky may not be falling, but Redskins fans should have seen the lean years coming miles away. And they are coming, so why not sooner than later?

My 2 cents

Huh, we've been in the lean years since Norv Turner arrived in '93.
