No question Taylor is an upgrade at defensive end.
But Taylor won't be moving inside on 3rd down.
Daniels will be missed in any case.

You have to think that Taylor is excited about coming here. When he was talking about retirement he was on a awful football team. This team has a lot of veterans and young talent at the same time. We have a good locker room and not that I have agreed with Cerrato on a majority of his moves, this one ill take...now if it had happened without the injuries that it would of been very questionable, but hey its an upgrade if it as least for two years thats worth a second rounder to and a sixth in two years. Now the real debate starts...What number will he wear and when will those Taylor Jerseys be in stores!! lol

His four years equates to 10-12 years with some of the guys we have.

We just drafted like three second rounders in this latest draft, now we gave one up next year and still have our first rounder. So what?

A second round draft pick and a future 6th rounder are a small price to pay for arguably the best defensive lineman in football.

Sure, he's 33 (34 at the start of the season) but he is one of the most athletic big guys in the NFL. What Jason Taylor's leadership and intelligence bring to our defense is almost immeasurable! We now have a really great defensive line to go with our linebacker corps, and secondary (Shawn Springs is allegedly in the best shape of his careeraccording to the Washington Post, and I think Stu Schweigert is massively underrated.)

Here's Taylor's scouting report from Scouts. Inc.:

Code: Select all

Grade: 90 | Key
Alert: B

Comment: Taylors career speaks for itself. He is one of the most productive defensive ends in NFL history. His dominance in 2006 (62 hits, 13.5 sacks, 18 TFL, 9 forced fumbles and two interceptions for touch downs) gave him the nod as the defensive MVP. Taylor is a tall lean player with excellent athletic ability. He has great initial quickness off the line of scrimmage and is disruptive often penetrating opponents backfields. He is tough, competitive and plays with a high motor. He generates deceptive strength with burst, pad level and hand jolt to get blockers off balance. Taylor uses his hands very well to gain leverage or disengage effectively. He can make moves and counters as a pass rusher and continue to gain ground (doesnt have to stop his feet or forward momentum). Taylor takes lots of chances (slipping blockers away from his gap responsibility) but is athletic enough to get back and make plays. He has great speed, quickness and burst to chase plays down from the backside or close to the quarterback. He is slender and narrow hipped but he understands leverage, pad level and hand use to hold the point versus the run. Taylor is very versatile as they move him around to make it tough to game plan for him. He is extremely instinctive and anticipates well as plays unfold. He can drop in coverage and is effective as a short zone defender. Taylor has sustained his athleticism (speed, quickness, flexibility and agility) and it doesnt appear that he has lost much this late in his career.

Jason Taylor told the Redskins he did not need to renegotiate and was willing to play for the final two years of his contract.

great pickup, imo. i've been screamin DE for four years now. the guy is a sack machine. i just hope we make it through the year with no more injuries on the d-line. he and carter will make it difficult for opposing lines to block. they can't double team everyone.

even if he only plays 2 years, thats probably 20 sacks. thats pretty much what the entire team had the last couple years.

In my eyes, all considered a good move, Jason Taylor will not hurt us, yes maybe a big price, but with Daniels going down something had to be done.

I'm just like McDonalds' cuz: bah duh bum bum bum I'm lovin' it!

I really hope he plays more than two years. We all know he still has it in him to make it past 2009.

I'm happy with this move, everyone knows that one of our biggest weaknesses is putting pressure on the opposing QB. This addresses the weakness immediately. Hail to the Redskins!

yeah im pretty happy with this move the more i think about it.. we'll just have to wait and see if it actually works out the way we would like it to.

I also like the move. And with potential "double teaming" on either end, it
really gives guys like Golston and Montgomery a chance to excel. I can't
see anything but upside in this move. It almost seems like the FO sat quietly for something just like this. It seems they're getting smarter.

A 2nd rnd pick is a lot to give up for a 34 yr old, on the otherhand, he is a premier player. I think his statements about retiring were based a lot on his feelings from last yr. He couldn't possibly have enjoyed playing for a team the was 1-15. His 11 sack are even more impressive considering Miami's oppponents were probably in "must pass" situations less than against any other team.

His 11 sacks also didn't come with Andre Carter or anyone close to Andre Carter on the other side.
I'd say this will make both defensive ends better. A 12 sack season would easily convince anyone to play another year.
So would $8.5 Million and a legitimate chance at the Lombardi Trophy.

It's a lot for a 34 year old, true. But the Redskins have absolutely no leverage; they needed a DE, everyone knew it, and whomever they tried to trade for would have a higher price than normal.

Unless, of course, you're willing to play the year with only 1 legit NFL DE.

How big of an adjustment is it to go from the right side to the left side.

Taylor seriously upgrades our DE position this year...........I guess Cerrato and Snyder wont have enough space to get Farve now!

255 was Strahan's playing weight for the last two years. Taylor's never been a liability against the run before, so this shouldn't represent any huge drop-off in production.

Bottom line we had no choice and we gave up intanigle assets(picks) for a an elite pass rusher thats also elite PLAYMAKER
he makes a difference
Daniels is a ZERO and was GOD AWFUL PUTRID IN OUR 5-11 SEASON two years ago

this a a great move for for our franchise for the next 2 years..
he will pay huge dividends.
i just see it now

3RD AND 10 IN TEXAS STADIUM...ROMO BACK TO PASS
AND TAYLOR COMES FROM OUT OF NOWHERE AND SACKS ROMO FORCES A FUMBLE

LET ME SEE SOMEONE CRY ABOUT 2ND ROUND PICKS THEN

HE WILL TERROIZE ELI!!!

Left side to right side wont be a problem for Jason........Id guess they'd switch it up abit anyway to throw off opposing Olineman/ make them study alittle more each week

I love this trade!!! We have two beasts at the ends now. If we can do what we did this year in the draft and trade down to get more picks, we will come out on top of this trade. Also, if we're in the playoffs, the pick won't be that high anyway. Our D just got five times better with one acquisition. Now we have Andre Carter and Marcus Washington on one side and Jason Taylor on the other. This move adds at least 10-20 more sacks. Jason will get double teamed and Carter and Washington will have a field day.

A much better aquisition this point in his career than when we aquired Bruce Smith. Taylor is not slower and broken down and does not have the sack agenda deal that Bruce had when we got him...........really an outstanding job by the front office at this point in the off season considering how bad off we were after daniels and buzbee wnt down.......

The strong side simply implies a tight end is on the same side.
It doesn't imply the tight end is blocking the defensive end.
In fact, I'd like that to happen. Taylor would have 5 sacks a game.
It might imply an occasional double team from the tackle and the tight end. If you double team someone, someone else is left unblocked.

I don't think this is nearly the concern some think it is.
The SLB and the SS are also to that side of the formation so if rushing defense is the concern, it shouldn't be. Not any more than last season.
And the pass rush has already improved by default.
Every Redskins fan, without exception, complained that the Redskins did nothing to upgrade the pass rush.
Well, now they have, if only by necessity due to injury.

If there is anyone else who was available that might have been more to someone's liking, talk away. But the only three defensive ends with five or more seasons of 10 sacks are Simeon Rice, the recently retired Michael Strahan, and some guy named Jason Taylor.
Taylor also hasn't missed a game in eight years.
