That was easily the best part of the game for me as well - nothing like protecting a 4-point lead by making it an
11-point lead!!! That's the way games are won - by piling on the points. Kudos to Gibbs for finally protecting a lead aggressively and building on it.
On the other (bad) side of things, losing JC and Smoot (who came back into the game, so his injury must not have been too serious) was just typical of the way this season has gone. Seriously, some Cowboys fan must've put a hex on this team or something - the injuries and other bad breaks just keep coming! But at least the 'skins came out of it with a win.

Campbell looked terrible last night, but to be fair, a lot of that was because the O line wasn't giving him any time to throw. Why they were giving Collins time and not JC, who knows. Losing JC is a setback, but it certainly looks like Collins is fully capable of stepping up and filling in well. His play off the bench was outstanding.

Collins is a 10 YEAR VETERAN IN BASICALLY ONE SYSTEM!!! That CANNOT be emphasised enough. It's not a surprise that he can make the reads. The offense is in super slow motion for him. So lets not make unfair comparisions between him and Jason.
Now when 2016 comes along and Jason is still making slower reads, then we can complain.

What team(s) did Collins used to play for?

roybus14 wrote:I have a question. In the next couple of games with Collins as the starter, do we call him a fumbler if he continues to get the ball knocked out from behind like last night?
Reason I ask is that you had an experience QB in the game with a quicker release and a step up in the pocket but yet he still got the ball knocked out of his hands. Was the problem with JC really him not feeling the pocket or was it Samuels not getting help on the edges with speed rushers and they are just making plays????
Because the same could be said last night about the Collins fumble that has been said about JC's fumbles....
I could care less about Collins - whatever he does he will just be the back-up and now he is still the back-up that is starting (for now) I hope he plays well because we need to learn more about who will be here next year - he will not!
The reason that happened was because Collins did not step up in the pocket as he should have - probably just not enough playing time BUT it definetly was not because of Samuels, he had the guy back there and Collins should not have been that far back that the defender could reach him.
SkinsFreak wrote:Losing JC really sucks. But if there's one positive in all of this, in my opinion, I think it will be extremely beneficial for Campbell to sit back and watch Todd run the offense for a few weeks.
JC can watch him live at the games and will study the film afterwards. I believe JC can learn a lot from this. Collins knows the system and knows what Saunders expects from the offense. I think this could be a good thing for Campbell's maturation.
This is an aspect of Campbell's game that I have had a concern about - he seems to take too long to make his decision - he has all the tools but he does not seem to feel the urgency - he does not seem to grasp that the game is a lot quicker at this level - he has got to learn to make his reads much, much quicker and get rid of the ball.
We have seen him in trouble a number of times in obvious blitz situations where he is still looking for his receiver when the ball should be already on its way - this is an instinct that he might never get but it will mean he is just another good QB but not a really good QB if he does not make this adjustment when he gets back on the field.

The only drawbck from having Collins start is that we are only one bad hit away from the eight car coming back in.
I don't mind is as much as the majority of the Skins fans, but it would certainly deflate the fan base to see him come in.

Okay, that made me feel a lot better.
I was disappointed last night to see Collins go in instead of Brunell, but after seeing Collins' play, that disappointment vanished pretty quickly.
Sure you can blame some of Collins' play on the Bears not being prepared to face him. You can say it was because the Bears were focusing on stopping the run. You can even say that it was because of the unleashed play-calling.
You can say all of that, but give some credit where it is due, he looked good last night.
It's not all just because he knows the system better. His passes were better. Recievers were actually catching the ball.

ey said the recievers were getting to the end of their route, turning around and the ball was there.
Collins is definately better over the middle, and on the fly than Campbell.
Campbell is probably better on the fade, and with his ability to scramble.
Even if the re-Todd get's knocked out, Brunell is still not a bad option compared to most third string QB's.
We may actually have a shot at going 3-0 for the rest of the season!

now it was good to see Collins play so well, and it is encouraging. But I think it's easier to do well against a defense who hasn't gameplanned for you. I am optomistic, but not completely confident. we'll see how Collins does when a team has a whole week to get ready for him.

There is quite a velocity difference between JC and Collins. That Yoder TD, for instance, would have been a batted ball b/c Collins put an arc on the ball that wouldn't have been there for JC. Collins throws a softer ball, so that makes it easier to catch. To say that's not a factor, especially in 30 degree weather, is just kidding yourself. They are NFL players and should be able to overcome this, but it's still a factor in the big scheme of things.

The Bears defense definitely changed when Collins came in because Collins runs Saunders offense the way it is supposed to be run. When executed properly, it is one of the most potent offensive schemes around. Collins coming in does demonstrate that the problem with Saunders offense is not the offense but the quarterback (Campbell) that is trying to execute it.
I am sorry to see Campbell get hurt but if he uses his time wisely and watches Collins excute Saunders offensive scheme and learns, maybe he will be better next year.

In his post-game comments, Gibbs said he doesn't remember a better performance by an off-the-bench QB in his time as coach.
The only one that instantly comes to mind is Jeff Rutledge in the Silverdome to beat the Lions in OT.

Jay Shrader off the bench to beat the Giants in the, "Look, Joe Theismann's leg is pointing the wrong way" bowl was pretty good.

This is the second thread in which you have posted this. Your statement is wrong. Incorrect. False. Collins took a sack in the first half and fumbled, and lost the fumble. So no we don't only take sacks and fumble when JC is in at qb. Samuels got beat and Collins failed to step up into the pocket and the ball was knocked out of his hands by Brown.

Just wanted to say I thought

ey was fantastic. I hope Greg Olsen pans out to be as effective and as hard to bring down.
Mike Sellers - what can I say? I love to watch guys like that. For all the fancy footwork, shimmying and shaking 'n baking that many do there is something to be said for a guy who brings all back down to the sheer essence of this game - which is, take YOUR guys and have them run right over the top of THEIR guys. Sellers is the sort of player every team ought to have on their roster.

John Clayton said on ESPN tonight that JC's injury is not as severe as initially thought. He said he might be able to return for the Cowboys game.
I'll just say this - healthy or not, I don't want JC to return. I've grown quite dishearted by his performance in recent games (as I've also been with Portis' and Moss' lack of performance). If Collins can run this offense more efficiently than JC, I see no reason why Collins shouldn't be our starting QB ending this year and, dare I say it, even beginning next year.
Let's put the best QB in there folks. Let's not put JC in there simply because we hope he is our future. If Collins runs our offense better than JC, then Collins should be our #1 QB even when JC is healthy!
My two cents.

Collins has looked sharp every time he has stepped onto the field for the Skins.
In pre-season, he looked better that JC and Brunell combined. Now he has just proven that he still has alot of fight in him..... HAIL

And under your plan we would develop a young qb how? JC is still learning and developing so of course he is going to go through some struggles. But he has been our best playmaker on offense and has been getting better. Collins has one good half of football against a mediocre defense and he should be our starter next season? Brilliant. This is the type of attitude that has gotten this franchise into the mess that it's in. We are unwilling to go through the building process and instead keep trying for the quick fix. Well it's pretty clear that that doesn't work in today's NFL.

You are missing the point of my post completely. What I am trying to convey is - I want the best QB we have leading this team. If it's JC, let's go with JC. If it turns out to be Collins, we should go with Collins and not get wrapped up in the idea of JC being our QB because everyone wants him to be.
I, for one, want the best guy out there! Is it Collins? Is it JC? Too early to tell right now. If Collins does very well in the next few games, then I suggest that Collins may be the guy. Remember my quote, I said:
If Collins can run this offense more efficiently than JC....
...and I will disagree with you that JC has been getting better. He has played much better games earlier in the year and lately he just hasn't shown me much at all - fumbles, INTs, etc.
Don't for one second label me a JC hater. I'm not. I just want what's best for this team. I want the QB out there that is best for this team.

I will agree that if Collins wins us the rest of our games and takes us to the playoffs then we should leave him in charge. Heck, even if he struggles there's no reason to have Campbell back anyway.
But next year, with another season under his belt, Campbell should be our starting QB. No matter what.

I understand what you are saying, but if you want JC benched, how in the world is the kid supposed to develop? You can't just expect a young qb to come in and be a pro bowler right away. JC has to go through some struggles until he develops into the qb that we want him to be. The game still seems a little slow for him and only on-field experience is going to help that.

Let Campbell heal. Let him continue his learning when he is fully recovered. Meanwhile, Collins might be sharp enough to go the rest of the way.
Incidentally, Collins might be about 36, but he doesn't have that many miles on him. Has not taken the hits that Brunell has, even though they are about the same age. Maybe it's like buying a '97 Accord with only 10,000 miles, all highway driving. Still has some life.

I can dig what your saying Justice.. at a time like this where we need to win out, it does appear TC is a better choice right now than JC. Given the fact that JC got pretty banged up against the Bears, I'd DEFINITLEY let TC ride it out for us the rest of the way. Nothing against JC, I love him and I think he's our future but in this close race we need someone who is 100% healthy and incidentally TC knows this system better than anyone on the team. JC as backup QB for the rest of the season/post-season (hopefully). Next year we can start JC and let him go from there. I don't think there's anything wrong with this at all. I just hope Gibbs understands this as well and doesn't let his loyalty cloud his vision.
I also just wanna congratulate (sp?) those other subs that came into the game for us. I thought our secondary played extremely well and held them in check. John Eubanks and Leigh Torrence stepped up in a big way and didn't Anthony Mix and Matt Sinclair do great on special teams? I mean the only time we heard Hester's name was when he played reciever. Also, I've been saying for a while that teams forget about Yoder, I'm glad we were able to take advantage of that. Awesome job!!!
For everyone that went to the game, good for you guys because that place was loud and rocking all night!!! I was drunk so I was yelling all night long.. especially at the Bears fans in front of me. LOL
