I would bet that Marshall was upset at being a backup and he approached the coaches about being released. There was no advantage for the Redskins to release him today because cuts are not until next week, unless they had their eye on someone else. Redskins radio said they tried to trade him but received no interest.

A quote from redskins.com
"Godfrey takes the roster spot of Lemar Marshall, who was released on Monday. "
Monday??? I hope they did it before practice. That would really suck to practice in the heat, just to get cut at the end of the day.
I feel for the guy. I really liked Marshall.
Is this guy to be a starter?? I would say no, Rocky is the man. So why make this move. Marshall does NOT suck. As CLL said he had only one bad year, and I think is starting caliper player. (edit)
He knows the system, but Godfrey played for the Chargers. They run a completely different Defense.

I firmly believe the Patriots are the antichrist.

We don't know the whole story, LM could have requested this... It just sucks losing a homegrown (not drafted but kinda grown into a good player) guy who could play every LB. Especially with Marcus's injury bug and Fletcher being 1000 years old... He was a safety net.
I could envision LM being pissed he was demoted, I didn't like the London signing until I saw him in action. I was sold. But I still don't believe taht LM deserved the amount of blame he got from the public.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!

Agreed, I think it would be unfair to single out any one player in last year's debacle.Chris Luva Luva wrote:Fios wrote:Am I the only person here not overly impressed by Marshall? I don't hate the guy, I wish him the best of luck but I'm not losing sleep over this either

AFAIK, the team (and all teams) still have roster number limitations - to bring someone in, they have to let someone go. They can't just sign everyone willy-nilly and not worry about it until cuts time.

I swear on the news the other day, maybe FOX, they caught LM outside the practice facility, approached him and talked to him about being the obvious guy to fill in Washington's spot.
This doesn't feel like one of those things we need to get all upset about though.

I'm sure if either Fletcher or Rocky Mac had been the one injured they wouldn't have done this, but I think GW didn't relish Marshall filling in on the strong side for any length of time... and he's worked with Godfrey before, so it's not like falling in love with some guy by reputation only (Archuletta)...

To be fair Archuleta does have dreamy eyes ... he's all "I'm about as effective as a napkin floating from the nose bleed seats when it comes to pass coverage" and you really wanna get angry with him and say "stop getting beat over the top" but then he winks and you're all "oh, gosh, it's OK, here is $4 million"

Yeah I went there...
A shameless attempt to turn this into a MB thread ...
I like MB - on the bench. For being healthy and all his experience - for him to have so many 3 and outs is just embarassing - and against 3rd, 4th and 5th stringers. He should have eaten them alive - IF he's everything he said to be. Perhaps the best role for him is to help JC this season then hang up his cleats.
As for LM, the skins are looking for consistency. LM seemed to be having issues with that (again/still). Can't blame the skins if they feel that they can upgrade at that position. I just hope his replacement can get up to speed quickly.

At first it seems shocking, but after extensive deliberation, I have concluded that I'm really not bothered by this in any way.
I wish Lemar well - he did a good job for the Redskins, and deserves our thanks. But the injury to Washington changes the dynamics of the linebacker situation, and I believe that the play of HB Blades so far may also be a factor. Clearly, Campbell seems well liked by the staff too.
I assume that the defensive staff feel more comfortable with the idea of plugging Godfrey in to the mix than they do with Marshall. Marshall seemed a fine back-up on paper, but perhaps the staff had seen enough of him over the last two years to have decided that they'd prefer to have somebody else, if it becomes necessary to put that reserve out on the field.
