We shouldn't part with the second rounder, because we need to address the D-Line! Last year we did this same type of stuff, addressing every position except D-Line until all the cap space is used up and we were left with Dalton, Holsey and those other chumps we had playing.

Joe Gibbs was not in charge last year. Make no mistake about it: Joe will address the D line. We may not be hearing about it now, but we will. We really didn't hear about the Portis thing until it's almost a done deal! Joe has many tricks up his sleeve yet!!

Its not Gibbs I'm worried about, its cap space. Portis will have to be paid and the so will the replacement for Champ at CB.

You've got a point. I can't see Gibbs addressing the QB position with Brunell, then the RB position with Portis, and not have a plan for the D-Line when thats got to be our biggest need. He's gotta have a trick or two up his sleave.

No 2nd rounder, just a straight-up trade would be fair. We need the second rounder for our d-line or TE. Sean Taylor at #5 is the best choice for us. If we lose Champ, an impact safety will definitely become a priority. I'm still against Kellen Winslow given that there are two other great blocking TEs available in the draft in the 2nd round.

Portis would be perfect for Gibbs' offense. The guy is an animal at RB, but not worth Champ and a 2nd rounder.

Portis also got to play twice a year against San Diego, Kansas City, and Oakland...the 27th, 29th and 30th ranked defenses in the league...behind a good offensive line....too risky!!!!!

Nonetheless, he was Denver's offense. Denver was 22nd in the league in passing despite those games against Kansas City, San Diego and Oakland (20th, 21st, 22nd and K.C.'s pass D was clearly worse than the numbers show) as well as games against Minnesota (26th) while using three different starting quarterbacks. And he actually missed all or part of 4 games, not a positive where his health is concerned but something that makes his stats all the more impressive. And he only fumbled the ball 3 times in 290 carries, making him one of only 4 backs with more than 280 carries to drop the ball 3 times or less. His yards per game were second in the league to Jamal Lewis who also had 2 games against Cleveland (23rd) and Cincinnati (25th) as well as playing Kansas City, San Diego and Oakland. I'm not ecstatic about losing a second round draft pick but we still hold the no. 6 pick which could easily be traded down.

Also, if we assume Portis stays healthy all year, not totally unreasonable, and we assume he gets 20 carries a game, and that is conservative, and we factor in a full yard per carry loss in his average, which is rather steep, he would run for 1,440 yards, which would have made him no. 8 in the NFL last year, a mere 4 yards behind Stephen Davis. If you bump the carries per game to 25, again, not unreasonable given Gibbs' coaching style, keeping with the diminished yards-per-carry estimation, Portis totals 1,800 yards, making him third in the NFL and 2nd in the NFC, both by very comfortable margins.

I'm not saying Portis isn't a good back. I'm saying some of those stats that Portis has gotten might be inflated because of the o-line he plays behind and the division he plays in. I hope that if we do get him that i will be eating my words...but there just alot of risk where giving up to get him especially if where throwing in our second round pick.

I understand your concern but if a diminshed Portis gives the Skins a top 3 running back at the expense of a corner they can not afford and a second round pick (and I am guessing his contract will be large but not overly punative in terms of the cap) I believe the trade is, if somewhat austere in terms of relative price, worth the cost. Even if we keep the pick and snag Taylor, his presence would presumably offset the loss of Bailey to some extent.

Make them give us Gardner back too, then, if we have to give up a 2nd round pick. We'd have the money, because we wouldn't have a 2nd rounder to pay. He'll respond to Gibbs and Williams. We just have to keep that frickin' guy out of the local pancake houses. Too much action there for him in the parking lot.
