Yeah, but we don't have any picks after the 1st until 5th round this year.

And there have been plenty of high ranked DEs who panned out pretty well.

Like top 10 picks Bruce Smith, Chris Doleman, Leslie O'Neal, Neil Smith, Kevin Carter, Simeon Rice, Richard Seymour, Julius Peppers, etc.

Lots turn out well, lots don't. But that's about par for the course with the draft.

As I watched Super Bowl 22 last night, something stuck out to me, Charles Mann and Dexter Manley. Gotta have 2 great defensive ends. I think Anderson and Carter could be a real force. I'd grab him.

I agree, they were big and quick for there size they were a real force.

That's why I say we try to trade down like 10 or so spots and pick up like an early 3rd Rounder along the way.

Then hopefullly there will still be either a good DE/DT there, or we could snab a stub MLB like Posluzney or Pat Willis while picking up a 3rd Round pick in the Process.

The workout had held in Arkansas' beautiful new FieldHouse on FieldTurf. There were 100 NFL personnel in attendance, including head coaches Scott Linehan (Rams) and Mike Tomlin (Steelers), Redskins VP of football operations Vinny Cerrato, Redskins defensive line coach Greg Blache, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and Lions defensive coordinator Joe Barry.
Player Position Gil's comments
Jamaal Anderson DE Anderson (284 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.75 and 4.80. He also had a 9-foot-8 long jump, 32½-inch vertical jump, 4.22 short shuttle, 6.88 three-cone drill and 22 bench presses.

Adam numbers were beter all around I believe.

Cerato and Blache were on hand to see Anderson Workout...
According to NFL.com Anderson beefed up to 284lbs and still ran the 40 in 4.75 and 4.80. He had a 32½-inch vertical, which is a measure of explosiveness and a 4.22 short shuttle, which I dont know if thats good or not, a 6.88 three-cone drill, again, I dont know if thats good, and 22 bench presses...

This is a comparison of Jamaal Anderson (JA), Gaines Adams (GA), and Adam Caricker (AC)... as well as Mario Williams (MW), Peppers (JP).

Looking at the other DE, it doesn't look that bad.

Nice data. Not to over-emphasize combine numbers, but I will say that data seems to point out Anderson is not overly strong or explosive compared to the other DE's listed. Definitely not "Wow" numbers.

That 40-time is very worrying considering most of the time when Arkansas players run at the on-campus pro-day the times are usually much higher than you would expect.

Stil, though, 284 at 4.8 isn't too terrible. Right now it comes down to whoever the FO picks. I would sugest a player like Patrick Willis before Admas if Anderson is not drafted.

Man 4.8 at 6-6 280lbs isnt too terrible that is excellent. This guy is strong, quick and massive that is just what we need. I dont care if he was clocked at 4.8 I stll believe he is better than Gaines Adams.

Man that goes to show you why Mario Williams was taken over Bush. Those were monstrous numbers. If he ever gets his technique where it needs to be look out. Maybe since he did worse than the others in the agility drills is why he didnt do well in his first year. Not a bad workout at all for Anderson. Showed he is perhaps more agile than Adams although he doesn't have the same first step/sprint Adams does. He has a great size/speed combination. Very Comparable to Peppers. Since Adams weighed in at 258, I change my mind, I'd take Anderson. He is mad quick for his size.

The 40 time for a DE is not all that important. The 10 split is much more important as are the vertical leap and broad jump (for explosiveness) and the bench reps (for strength) I think he would be a better fit for us than Adams as well. We don't run a Colts style, small/super speed defense that would rather get sacks than defend the run. GW likes a balanced rushing/passing attack where we occasionally blitz from any/every position on the field. Dl who can hold up against the run a needed. Adams is more a Freeney clone. Anderson doesn't appear to have Peppers strength and explosiveness so I see him more like a Kampman or Pryce style DE (we hope).

I still like the idea of trading down and getting Okoye or Branch better.

I dont know his 40 speed and bench are pretty close to peppers, he is a little heavier, same height, did very well in the speed drills. Both have long arms. His vertical is a little lax though but other than that.

Link on an article about the ever shrinking size of DE's coming out of college. Nice quote by Jamal Anderson on there too.
