A lot of that is that Snyder has the money to spend, and is not afraid or unwilling to spend it. But their emphasis on the FA market is at the expense of the draft, imho.

If we had a smart FO, good at drafting, AND Snyder's willingness to spend on FA's, it'd be pretty impressive. But...we don't.

1. The Skins do just as well as every other team in the draft. The Pats and Skins both needed a Tight End a few years back Gibbs past on KW2 and he was off the board when NE picked, they went with Ben Watson who is starting to play pretty good lately. Gibbs got Cooley who stepped up day 1.

No we don't. Other than Golston who was the last late round player to make a positve impact on this team? It's not rocket science to figure out that taking a guy like Sean Taylor 6th overall is a good idea. It's clear from out late round picks the last few season that our scouting either isn't up to par or we don't put enough emphasis on it.

Since Gibbs has come back we've drafted the following players after the 3rd round:

Mark Wilson, Jim Molinaro, Manuel White Jr., Robert McCune, Jared Newberry, Nehemiah Broughton, Anthony Montgomery, Reed Doughty, Kili Lefotu, Kevin Simon, and Kedric Golston.

Golston is the only player from that group that has actually distinguished himself. That is a terrible track record as far as drafting in the later rounds of the draft. Of our early picks, Taylor and Cooely have played very well for us. Campbell is stepping up and is showing promise. Rogers has been mediocre at best and McIntosh can't even break into the lineup despite playing behind one of the worst linebackers in the NFL. We've done better with the early round picks than the late rounders but even here there have been some serious head scratchers, such as drafting Rogers over Shawne Merriman and Demarcus Ware.

Using free agency instead of the draft is one of the main reasons why we've had one of the worst records in the NFL since 1992. Instead of developing our own players and then keeping players that we know fit in our system, we overpay for other people's players. Instead of drafting young players that are eager to prove themselves we sign veteran players that have proven themselves elsewhere and are now looking for the big money contract. And everyone in the NFL knows that Snyder and Co. love to give out huge contracts.

And for those that think that free agency is better than the draft, here is a list of players that we could've had on this team if we had kept all of our draft picks since Gibbs' return:

2004 second: safety Bob Sanders (Colts, starter); safety Madieu Williams (Bengals, starter).

2004 third: tackle Max Starks (Pittsburgh, starter); tackle Sean Locklear (Seattle, starter), quarterback Matt Schaub (Atlanta, backup).

2004 fourth: cornerback Nathan Vasher (Bears, starter); cornerback Jason David (Colts, starter); wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery (Jets, starter).

2004 fifth: running back Michael Turner (Chargers, backup).

2004 sixth: cornerback Dexter Wynn (Eagles, backup)

2004 seventh: wide receiver Patrick Crayton (Cowboys, backup)

2005 second: safety Josh Bullocks (Saints, starter); linebacker Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks, starter)

2005 third: cornerback Dominique Foxworth (Broncos, starter), defensive end Chris Canty (Cowboys, starter)

2006 first: center Nick Mangold (Jets, starter), guard Davin Joseph (Bucs, starter), tackle Marcus McNeill (Chargers, starter)

2006 third: tight end Dave Thomas (Patriots, backup), linebacker James Anderson (Panthers, backup)

2006 fourth: defensive tackle Barry Cofield (Giants, starter)

I have a few questions.

1. Why do other teams consistently (ravens, Pats) have success using the draft?
2. Why do the Redskins seem to have so much trouble?
3. Since the Skins have gone almost exclusively F/A how has it positively effected the Win column?

2005, we sparingly used the F/A market.

Because they have a GM who studies the collegiate pool a year prior to the draft!
Taylor and Landry will take no Prisoners!! - I just can't bring myself to delete it!

Read John Feinstein's Next Man Up. Excellent read, and you get an idea why the Ravens draft so well. Well, except for Boller and WRs...

that was a good book...i respect Billick a lot more after that read. There's also some pretty bad stuff about Snyder in there that made me take a different look toward him

I agree with everything you just said in this post accept one thing. it's not that much of a head scratcher that we picked rogers over merriman or ware...looking back, it's easy to wish we had...but at the time, we just lost smoot and we still had Lavar. we didn't think they were a need. at the time.

other than that, great post IMO

Yeah Snyder comes off as a real ahole from what he had done.

And I detest Billick, because he very much thinks he's the smartest man alive. But the book revealed he has a sneaky, self-deprecating sense of humor, and his media act is...an act.

Bleh.
