In fairness to "2x4", I wouldn't put it past him to come back next year (if he's still on the team) to come back having mastered the Saunders system, like he did Gibbs' last year. Truly, learning the new offense (for an "old dog" like Brunell) was a challenge. Camp could be interesting.
Talk of Mark Brunell doing anything here next year really just shows a lack of knowledge of the facts at hand if you ask me.
You don't pay a guy 6.5 million dollars to back up any position... even quarterback... especially when you can cut him after this season and save over 2 million off of what his cap number will be next year. They can cut him, pay out the contact AND sign a replacement with the same amount of cap dollars spent for 2007.
He won't be a Redskin next year and while the smart thing to do would be to wait until after June 1st to cut him so that we could spread the cap hit out over two seasons, I'm sure the Redskins will release him ealy to give him an opportunity to catch on with someone else if that's what he wants to do.
The only way you'll see MB in D.C. next year (in my opinion) is if he retires and comes back as a position coach a la Ray Brown this year.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.
The Redskins have been sub .500 for over a decade - without Gibbs. How fast you forget. The team culture of losing is firmly entrenched and Gibbs is finding out just how difficult it is to turn the bad news bears into the new york yankees.
I agree with you, except following the model of the Yankees, at least the Yankees of the past 5 seasons is what has gotten us partially into this mess. I hope we can be compared to someone like the St. Louis Cardinals in the next few seasons, with prudent free agent signings a good young talent pool of depth, and a perennial contender.
As far as the first question is concerned, yes Gibbs if he was anyone else, would be gone. But that highlights the real problem with this organization from the top down. The willingness to trade away a future so we can win now has only made us worse. Hopefully Gibbs and co will realize just have important later round picks are in the NFL these days and be able to improve.
Bruce has the authority. When Bruce makes the decision, it's a Redskins decision.
Duhh! Its Joe Gibbs! The man won us Three Super Bowls need I say more. He is the Redskins forever Past present and the future. He will always be a part of the Redskins. Not even the Danny would dare fire him.
We are not calling for Joe (The Godfather) Gibbs head because he has brought us our only 3 rings you numbskulls. That's the problem, change, change, change, change, change. Don't you guys get it yet. Let's just hold tight, keep things together and shoot for better results with another FULL offseason in the same system for once.
I agree with a few of the posts in this thread (UK Skins Fan, Hogster, etc.). If it was anyone else but Gibbs, there'd probably be people calling for his head. (In fact, there are people calling for Gibbs' head, forget "anyone else"!)
That doesn't make it right, though. If it were another coach who had the same 3 seasons that we've been witnessing after Gibbs' return, I'd be thoroughly disappointed if he was fired at the end of the year.

Agreed - I will only add the obvious - Gibbs inherited a team and organisation that was not in very good shape and even though we are disapointed in where we are, mainly because we had such high expectations this year - we are a lot improved and despite the record I believe we will be even better over the near future because of J J Gibbs.
As welch pointed out - why would you think about replacing one of the best coaches ever? What are you thinking?
Sit back and watch Gibbs make this franchise successful again.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I was listening to the John Riggins Show the other day and they were talking about the cost to the cap to cut Brunell next year, and Kevin Sheehan says, his cap number is 6.5 million. that's his number. and Riggins says even if he retires, and Sheehan says, that's his number.
The next segment he comes back with well, if he retires it will actually save us 2 million dollars.

Right on the money. I was ignorant of the following facts:
[The Redskins] can cut him after this season and save over 2 million off of what his cap number will be next year. They can cut him, pay out the contact AND sign a replacement with the same amount of cap dollars spent for 2007.

Thanks for the info. Best wishes to Mark wherever he ends up. Of course, if tradition holds up, as a former Redskin, he's sure to shine somewhere else once he's gone.

What you say all makes perfect sense, but this organization hasn't exactly created a reputation of super-smart personnel moves. I have no idea what they'll do with him next year, and will have to wait to see how it all plays out.
