I'm beginning to wonder not "how long should Gibbs have?" but "how long will he stay?". I mean,if we don't make the playoffs this year, he has to make a decision at qb that is not going to be easy. It's obvious he doesn't like Ramsey, but you have to wonder how Brunell fits into the near term of this team. Next year he'll be a year older and skills will diminish that much further. If he goes with Campbell, he knows there's going to be a few years there while Campbell matures into an NFL QB. This is, in no way, a quick road to the Super Bowl, and he originally said he'd coach for 5 years. With the present qb situation, I don't know if we can get there in the 3 years that are remaining.

I was going to say that but it was a bit morbid.

As long as he wants.

He deserves that much.

Genius? :hmm:

If you are a Marvin Lewis fan, it is alright. Why not cheer for his yeam too? They seem to be doing well and they probably appreciate you as a fan.

Your standing as a Redskins fan is going down very rapidly in my book (and probably others).

Gotta disagree with you on this one RiC. There's nothing wrong with asking a question. How long should Joe be given to get us back to winning? It's a pretty good question I think, I don't have a answer but I think it's a pretty good question.

The close I'd be able to come to a answer would be "As long as it takes". Gibbs may not have that long, I don't know. He has 3 years left on his contract and that may be enough time, who knows. Gibbs said he was coming back to return the franchise back to glory. Does 1 winning season get that done? What about one trip to the post season. A return to the winning ways is just part of what Gibbs wants to get done.

The locker room has less headcases after 26 games than it did 2 years ago. The coaching staff has remained intact for the first time in a very long time. Gibbs is filling the roster with the type of guys he wants on the squad. All these things needed to be done before any progress could be expected on the field. However I do see progress on the field so I say "As long as it takes" even if that's not a answer.

I too am a Marvin Lewis fan and I really like what he is doing with the team. He has so many ex-Skins on that team it would be easy for a less than loyal "Redskin fan" to jump to Cincy. I root for Marvin, Kenny Watson, Iffy, Carl Powell and a few others on the roster but to cheer for the Bengals as a team just ain't possible

Joe will know in his heart when it is time to go, You won't need to show him the door. All he's done this year is something that no other coach has done for us in many, many years...he's made it possible for us to hope against all hope that we could once again be a competitive team in this league.
We're on the right track, but we haven't been right since the SF game. We were 3-0, and proceeded to lose 5 of 7. That's a stepo backwards.
He'll get it right. No way we're 5-6 next Sunday night, man. No way.
Besides, Gates is likely to be out. I'll take it.

I've had a gut feeling for a while that Gibbs won't be the coach when the Redkins win their next Superbowl. But he will be the man who built the foundations. Some people may not think that is enough, but they forget how far this club has to climb from the depths it was in.

Gibbs has until his contract is up, I don't believe dan will let him go but if things are not going well, i dont see joe resigning a new contract. i believe there is 3 years after this left.

With Gibbs the Skins beat the cowladies in a meaningful game in over 7 years, with a chance to sweep them for the first time in like 2 generations. He can stay as long as he wants.

As long as it takes. I love the guy! I don't agree with everything he does - but he's a great person and a better coach.

I'm with redskingush on this one...I don't think that Danny will fire him, but if his return isn't going well, I don't see them agreeing on a new contract.

Of course, I don't really think it's out of the realm of possibility for Coach Gibbs to step down before that. After all, he is getting older, and has had health problems, so, I think that it would be entirely possible that he decides he's not keeping up with the new game and step down. In which case, since new candidates are the issue, I have a few suggestions (in no particular order):

1) Charlie Weis
2) Dick LeBeau
3) Norm Chow

Of course, it also depends on whose available at the time that Gibbs stepped down...

Joe Gibbs came back to restore this franchise to greatness -- the greatness atained during his previous tenure. We will be on the winning side before he leaves. Joe Gibbs is a HOF HC, one of the best ever. What about Marty's tough beginning in San Diego, and where are they now? Give the man a little time, folks. Joe Jackson Gibbs is the Man!!

That's the name. Keep saying it.

Honestly, he signed a 5 year deal, the team continues to improve, despite injury. This should not even be a question. Consistency in coaching is what helps teams win. Not making quick changes every few years.

I'm bumping this old thread of mine because it's still an interesting question. When I first posted it, we were in the middle of a skid which would put us at 5-6, and Gibbs had the exact same record as Spurrier at this point in his second season. However, the team finished the 2005 season with the famous 5-game run, plus a playoff victory, and I ended up looking pretty silly for even bringing the question up. Fair enough, and as a fan I was happy to be wrong. Going into 2006, every Redskins fan (me included), thought this was going to be The Year Gibbs restored this franchise to glory. We all assumed we'd make the playoffs at a minimum; the only question was, how deep could we go?

And yet now here we are, looking at a disaster of a 5-11 season, just the same as Spurrier's final season. Gibbs has had the worst season of his entire career, and this time it wasn't with someone else's players - he's had the team 3 years now, and he's the one shopping for the ingredients, as Parcells would say. He's also got the worst 3-year record of any coach in our division, and we're the only NFC East team that didn't make the playoffs this year. I hope and believe next year will be better, but what if it's not? If we see 5-11 or 6-10 again next year, should Gibbs go? Flame away!

However, I want to hear some hard numbers from people - how long should Gibbs have before we can start looking for some results (playoffs, maybe)? Like so many other fans, I was excited beyond belief when Gibbs came back at the end of the '03 season, but the 'skins improving their record by only one win last year was a big let-down. The great start this year (3-0) again got me thinking this was the turn-around year, but this latest 2-5 skid is just crushing. When can we expect the 'skins to start scaring teams again?

If you mean how long before we fire him, I would never fire him.

I still think that Gibbs, unlike a lot of coaches, will make the decision to go or stay based on what he thinks is right for the team. I think (as UK Skins Fan pointed out) that he will leave our team (as coach) in better shape than when he came back. I really do not think that anyone else could have done as good a job as he has with this franchise and given the realities of this team's organization and players.

It is a little unfair to compare Gibbs to the other coaches records in this division. He is trying to make our team better - he would probably be doing a lot better than Parcells, Reid or Coughlin if he had their teams BUT I am very sure not one of those guys could have come in here with our situation and done better than Gibbs.

We might see him stay on in another capacity as well. Gibbs, unlike many coaches with huge egos, will do the right thing for the Redskins.

I do know that Gibbs will decide to do whatever is best for our team at the time that he thinks it is right to do it - I also feel that there is no other coach that come into this situation at this time and make it work and build it back up.

I think that this coming season may be very revealing to Gibbs and the NFL.

Gibbs is a man of great character, and I've never doubted he has and always will put the interests of the team ahead of his own ego. But that doesn't mean that all his decisions are going to be correct, even if he believes they're in the best interest of the team. Just because Gibbs believes a certain decision is best for the team doesn't mean it actually is best for the team. Some of the personnel decisions he's helped make since he came back certainly haven't worked out at all. Regarding next season, there's certainly going to be a lot riding on it. Personally, I think it's a make-or-break season for Gibbs. If we get another losing season, I'm not sure I want him to stay.

All you who have argued for getting rid of Gibbs are IDIOTS MORONS & SIMPLETONS.

We have the best coach in the history of football coaching the Redskins right now!

The answer to how long should Gibbs have is :

AS LONG AS HE WANTS

My answer remains the same as it was. A very disappointing season has unsurprisingly shaken the faith of some, but not me.

I may lose faith in the Redskins organisation, but never in Joe Gibbs.
