Isn't it great to have a player the caliber of Sammy Baugh, a veritable football legend, as a member of the Redskin family?!! Its the Sammy Baugh's of the football world that I bring up when Patriot fans talk about their dynasty and the "legacy" of their team. I remind them that they are just "babes in the woods" when it comes to football history. Sammy Baugh had left his mark a full 8 years before the Pats even came into existence. (Thanks for letting me vent. I'm just too embedded in Patriots territory. C'mon Redskins let's show these Pats whose Boss!!!!

!!!)

I'm still working on a bunch of stuff for the site makeover, but the Baugh page is fully functional though not really with any navigation around it yet.
But you can check out JF's article on Sammy, and find pretty much anything you wanna know about him right here in the meantime:

... and here's a link to a chart of all of his records and accomplishments (there is also a link to this page at the link above)

At BossHog's link, I read this record:
11/14/1943 Most Interceptions, Game, Redskins 4
...and thought, Well, Patrick Ramsey must have beaten that in one half. Then I looked at the left-hand title: "Defense".
Let's think about this record: Sammy Baugh, generally acknowledged to be the greatest passer of all time, holds Redskin record, and is tied with others for the all-time NFL record, for most interceptions in a game.
If Neon Deion intercepted two passes in a game, Chris Berman would spend fifteen minutes making up adulatory nicknames for the clod. Imagine...a Redskins safety today picks off four passes ina single game...
Additional bit of trivia:
- until Parcells coached the Jets, Baugh was the only coach that franchised ever had who finished his term without a losing record.

Remember our discussion of the all-time great Redskin team? We had Sammy Baugh as all-time best at QB, safety, and punter. Here's a quote to a Redskins official after they had drafted Baugh:
[College All Stars coach and 1913 Notre Dame passer Gus] Dorais predicted that Baugh "will do until some supernatural passer comes along." And this: "That ball he threw to Tinsley for the touchdown was floating so lightly that a babe could have plucked it." And more: "Outside of his passing, his best point is his defensive play. He's a dream guy as a safety man. Cagey, smart and fast, and they stay tackled when Sammy hits `em."
Impressibe? "...they stay tackled when Sammy hits 'em".

While I never saw him play, my father (age 89) who grew up in DC did. I also have the pleasure of knowing Harry Ulinsky who was center for both Baugh & my 1st sports hero, Eddie LeBaron (the "Little General"). From what they have told me, Baugh was the 1st to pass from deep in his own territory or near the goal line. Untill then passing was just between the 30's. My brain says he was the all time best Redskins QB, even though my heart says LeBaron.
