Ok, well, this strikes me as another example of a fundamental question debated at this site--if you have a player of admitted great physical gifts, do you alter your scheme to get him in, or do you maintain your scheme and force him into it? In past threads, we've discussed this question in relation to lavar, but now, how about Clinton Portis?
Clinton Portis last year had over 1300 yds not playing two games basically. That's a pretty impressive year. Right now, he's in the top 10 rushing...however, he's the only one on that list who doesn't have a rushing TD?
But is that something that clinton portis is not doing, or the team? Could be a little of both. Clinton put on some weight, and doesn't look as elusive as before. Of course, he added that weight so that he could hold up under a 300+ carries season. But Clinton never had a problem getting TD's with the Broncos, much like Tatum Bell doesn't have those problems now...is there anyone who would seriously contend that Bell is better than Portis?
I don't think so...what I think rather is that the athletic offensive line for the Broncos opened up teh kind of lanes that work for Clinton Portis. We've done it at times as well for him, with his average now raising to 4.3 yds/carry. That's solid, but wouldn't it be nice to incorporate that home-run play in there as well? That's why I think that tweaking the o-line with more athletic players, at least at the guard spots, could help our offense dramatically.
People have noted that would diminsh Brunell's pass protection. That may be true, if we assume that whatever guard we bring in over the offseason won't be able to gel with the other o-lineman. However, it is possible..Kareem McKenzie 's working out for the Giants, etc. Further, any pass protection issues do tend to be minimized considering how much max protect Coach Gibbs' plays.
So, if we did pull this trade for Thomas and Ramsey, and got Abraham, what would Coach Williams do with it? Abraham last year had 48 tackles and 9.5 sacks. On the other hand, Renaldo Wynn has never had over 40 tackles and 3 sacks. Phillip Daniels, who seems clearly overrated, has had 50 tackles in his best year, 9 sacks as well. So, what I'm saying is that tehre's no indication that Abraham couldn't perform the run duties expected in GW's system, while also adding a pash rush that the other guys don't. Many of you might think that a pash rush is unnecessary, b/c once we get our corners back, GW will come back with the blitzing agressive style we're accustomed to. But that style was at it's best when we had Smoot and Pierce. Perhaps we can get back to it with Rogers and Marshall, but that takes time. In the meanwhile, our lack of a pash rush gives opposing qbs all kinds of time, and our secondary simply can't hold up.
Of course, all this could be eliminated if lavar plays and brings that element back...but who knows if we'll ever find that out?
