Ok, well, this strikes me as another example of a fundamental question debated at this site--if you have a player of admitted great physical gifts, do you alter your scheme to get him in, or do you maintain your scheme and force him into it? In past threads, we've discussed this question in relation to lavar, but now, how about Clinton Portis?
Clinton Portis last year had over 1300 yds not playing two games basically. That's a pretty impressive year. Right now, he's in the top 10 rushing...however, he's the only one on that list who doesn't have a rushing TD?
But is that something that clinton portis is not doing, or the team? Could be a little of both. Clinton put on some weight, and doesn't look as elusive as before. Of course, he added that weight so that he could hold up under a 300+ carries season. But Clinton never had a problem getting TD's with the Broncos, much like Tatum Bell doesn't have those problems now...is there anyone who would seriously contend that Bell is better than Portis?
I don't think so...what I think rather is that the athletic offensive line for the Broncos opened up teh kind of lanes that work for Clinton Portis. We've done it at times as well for him, with his average now raising to 4.3 yds/carry. That's solid, but wouldn't it be nice to incorporate that home-run play in there as well? That's why I think that tweaking the o-line with more athletic players, at least at the guard spots, could help our offense dramatically.
People have noted that would diminsh Brunell's pass protection. That may be true, if we assume that whatever guard we bring in over the offseason won't be able to gel with the other o-lineman. However, it is possible..Kareem McKenzie 's working out for the Giants, etc. Further, any pass protection issues do tend to be minimized considering how much max protect Coach Gibbs' plays.
So, if we did pull this trade for Thomas and Ramsey, and got Abraham, what would Coach Williams do with it? Abraham last year had 48 tackles and 9.5 sacks. On the other hand, Renaldo Wynn has never had over 40 tackles and 3 sacks. Phillip Daniels, who seems clearly overrated, has had 50 tackles in his best year, 9 sacks as well. So, what I'm saying is that tehre's no indication that Abraham couldn't perform the run duties expected in GW's system, while also adding a pash rush that the other guys don't. Many of you might think that a pash rush is unnecessary, b/c once we get our corners back, GW will come back with the blitzing agressive style we're accustomed to. But that style was at it's best when we had Smoot and Pierce. Perhaps we can get back to it with Rogers and Marshall, but that takes time. In the meanwhile, our lack of a pash rush gives opposing qbs all kinds of time, and our secondary simply can't hold up.
Of course, all this could be eliminated if lavar plays and brings that element back...but who knows if we'll ever find that out?

Neither of which could handle a rookie on Sunday.

Not to start a fuss, but I think our OL is seriously overrated. At least amongst our fan base. I've been thoroughly disappointed in their play. I haven't seen anything to suggest that our OL is one of the better OLs in the league. With names like Samuels, Jansen and Thomas and a coach like Buges you'd think it should be.

every year we all find a reason why last year was an anomaly, why this year, our O-Line will live up to the names that are on it. and it never does. whenever we run in the red zone, our O-Line gets pushed 3 yards backwards. that is not the sign of a great O-Line.

i'm not pretending to know what the problem is, but maybe with the names some of these people have, we could think about trading them for some some nice draft picks and a pass-rusher, then build up a new and improved O-Line.

buges knows whatever the problem is though. i just hope he fixes it by coaching the guys we have, or bringing in the guys we need.

He wasn't even a starter for them though, I don't watch him that much but there is a reason he was traded and a reason that someone only gave up a 6th or 7th round pick.

I think we have a line that is inconsistent. They have a stellar game and then they have a sub-par game.

HAVEB'T YOU NOTICED HOW THE VALUE OF PLAYERS HAS GONE DOWN VERSUS DRAFT PICKS.BESIDES WHAT 6RD DRAFT STICKS AROUND VERY LING. A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE. BUT SEEING THAT BOSS HOG DIDN'T GO AFTER HIM MAYBE THERE'S SOMETHING TO HIM . BUT THE UNIT WE HAVE IS TALENTED ENOUGH TO BE GOOD IN SHORT YARDAGE, BUT AS OF YET. THE DO NOT BLOCK AS A COHESIVE UNIT IN ONE THRUST AND ARE NOT GETTING IT DONE AT THE GOAL LINE.EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT EACH OTHER IS RUNNING ON A RUNNING PLAY. IT'S EXECUTION THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.THEM GETTING THIS PROBLEM SQUARED COULD MEAN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US ENJOYING FOOTBALL DEEP INTO JAN AND WATCHING ANOTHER TEAM.sorry for the letter size, i forgot and can't delete or change it.

I don't follow how you think bringing in a new guard will somehow translate into more cohesiveness this year.

Part of them executing is playing together, not inserting a completely different person into the lineup in my opinion.

I like the trade for DE Abraham,if we give them Ramsey and Thomas then we let Lavar play some D. Lavar and Abraham would make our defense scary and cause some turnovers, and we would make us a huge contenter.

To me none of our linemen seem to be getting the push or offnse or defense.

What part do people understand about 1.) the trade dealine being over, and 2.) WE ARE NOT TRADING RAMSEY DURING THE SEASON.

Randy Thomas is our best offensive lineman. Yes better than Jansan and Samuals. I would be for this trade if it was Samuals for Abrham but not Thomas.

I don't think anyone will be traded until the end of the season.

Randy Thomas has been our most consistent lineman. Both Jansen and Samuels go through excellent and terrible periods.

What is your point? If you're going to start tossing facts around and insisting on their inclusion, a lot of sports writers will be out of work

Hey, I say we trade everyone......None of this matters b/c the deadline is over....Let it go. We are doing fine. Could we doing better, sure but we are ok.

It's unreal. Holy crap. I can't believe it. Why don't we just leave the o-line alone and give them time to come together ? We have a potential All-Pro at every spot on that line. Laugh all you want, but it's true. We're gonna go places with this line, and all of those places are good. Give them some more time. They will not make you forget the Hogs, but they may remind you of them !!
Also, trading deadlines are not necessarily the end of the deal making.

Gee, SJ, how did they do? OK, maybe? Better than OK?

I admit, I'll be happiest when the OL can take a defense like KC and stomp them into the turf. Like the 1983 game. (Not as close as the final score, which was 27 - 12. Redskins had about 30 first downs.)

A good game from the O line, but still a bit of work to do. I'm pretty happy right now and just feel that this group is starting to gel together.

Next week against the new trimmed down (faster?) Strahan will be a good test.

Strahan might be a little overhyped...Jansen can neutralize him
