And no, don't give me this bull that the guy is playing against the second stingers, cause the heat and accuracy on many of his passes would be completed against any type of defense. Brunell must have been hurt something awful last year, becuase he did not have half of the velocity he has on the last two pre-season games.

Since I couldn't watch the game last night here in NC, I went back and watched the Panthers preseason game again just focusing on Brunell. There was one play that really stood out for me and the Panther commentators picked up on it too.

The 'Skins were at the Carolina 45 or so and Brunell dropped back and threw a long pass from the 'Skins 47 yd line or so to a reciever in the endzone. He ended up overthrowing him by just a few yards but even though the pass was not completed it was still very impressive. He threw that ball over 60 yards in the air and what's more, it wasn't even like a bomb or anything, it was a rope only going about 20-25 feet above the ground. The guy is just a completely different player, that was impressive arm strength from any QB. His mobility is also excellent, he doesn't look much slower than he did in his prime in Jacksonville.

Gibbs will stick with the Ram for now but I am actually quite happy with the depth we have at QB. Brunell can obviously still play and Campbell is a star-in-waiting.

BTW, another thing to consider is this. Typically, left tackle is one of the most important positions in football as this is the guy who watches your QBs back. But, when you put a lefty in there at QB, right tackle is all of a sudden the most important position on the line. Jansen was injured last year and I'm sure that that contributed to Brunell's injuries. This year he will be protected much better.

He doesn't usually have this problem, normally he seems to throw the ball five feet over the guys head in the endzone ven if he's wide open.

DEHog wrote:and seeing the entire field…on the long pass to Patten last night, Royal was running wide open down the middle of the field and would have scored if Ramsey had seen him.

This is Ramsey's biggest weakness by far. He gets zoned in on one guy so much and often even if he makes a good pass you look at the play and see another guy who is just so wide open that you know it would have been a huge play if not a TD.

I remember this happening many times last year. Once, I think it was against Philly, Ramsey made a great move to avoid the rush and he ducked right under a blitzer and then threw a perfect 30+ yd strike to Cooley in the endzone and Cooley made the only drop I have ever seen him make. At first I thought, great play Ramsey, too bad it didn't work out, but then on the replay you could see that Portis was running down the center of the field and there was nobody within 15 yards of him in any direction. Just a little dink over the middle and he was gone. That was also a much smarter and easier play to make with a higher margin for error.

He needs to be more aware of the entire field to really make that next step but that is probably the hardest thing to learn as you need to know exactly where all your recievers should be at all times and you then have to be able to see where the defenders are and know who's open. Maybe a couple more preseason games and the game will slow down for him. It's not going to be easy though going up against the Steelers and Ravens, probably the two best defenses in football (other than ours of course).

Boschetti actually has shown he deserves to stay. Portis has an elbow issue that they are not taking chances with and Taylor being cut wouldn't help us at all. What about the cap hit that would cause?? I'm hoping this a joke but I guess I'm just missing it. lol

It's the weekend of course I'm -drinking

Now does this sound like me being anything but joking

The 3 items I mentioned will do as much to help the team as much as trashing our STARTING QB 2 weeks into pre-season will.

I say give Ram's one last chance v. Pitt if he cannot hit wide open recievers, he is out of here, Ramsey is a morron. And he has a nasty throwing motion, very low, almost sidearm like.

The guy throws like a girl. by pushing the ball instead of chucking it like a man.

Boonell can start the 4th preseason game and if he performs well start him, he doesn't need too much time to get into the flow, he is a VET.

Wow....patience...give it time....Ramsey didn't just arrive to this team..he has been here..he has started...too much excuses for a Pro starting QB. Time to put up or shut up before the season starts to count. I don't want another losing year of football when we have all the right players to make this work.I don't know about you guys but I'm tired of just wishing that Ramsey would turn into some lost brother of Payton Manning. We have been losing for some time now and I just don't believe that it is Ramsey who is going to get us out of this slump after watching him QB for us for the past few years. There is no team that fears him and what he could do. They don't respect him or his ability...all they do is blitz and laugh. He doesn't have it..how far do you really think his ability is going to take us? Change of QB is necessary if he doesn't seriously about face in these last few preseaon games. You are suppose to win preseason games and show improvement heading into the season...especially at the QB position. So what if he has a whole bunch of passing yards...look at the touchdown to interception rate of his whole career..He isn't helping us..he is hurting us. Preseason counts whether you want to believe it or not..It is very rare that a team(redskins) with a poor preseason wins a superbowl. The odds are against it. Unless you want to believe in another miracle. It's not going to happen with Ramsey.

Ok one more time. I posted this in the game thread and I'm not losing this. Scott knows a lot more about football and he noticed this too. Ramsey's weakness was his left side. If he threw to his left side, interception, incomplete. Ran to his left side they didn't get much. I'm tellin you guys there is something to this. They are working on this. If he played to his strengths it would have gone smoother but preseason is about working out kinks.

QB controversy

Post by BT »

Ramsey can no longer blame his mistakes on youth or inexperience. Nor can we tolerate another losing season while he develops. He simply doesn't have what it takes to be a starter in the big league. He folds under pressure. Defenses know that which is why the blitz him so often. If he has perfect blocking and the recievers execute perfect routes he has a chance of connecting. Otherwise, he's inaccurate or he throws an interception. His mistakes are mental, he makes bad decisions. Just contrast his play with Brunnell's game last night. Under pressure, Brunnell has poise, he can make things happen (assuming the recievers hold on to the ball). Brunnell was a new man last night playing like he did before coming to Washington. Put a little pressure Ramsey and he falls apart. Campbell may be our future because it certainly isn't with Ramsey

Thank god someone else is seeing that Rams big weakness is the "left side of the field" and the "post coner routes".I'm shocked the coaches didn't work on this hardier in the training camps.I think the way he is setting his feet and body to throw at this angle is all wrong and he needs some help to overcome this.Everyone must remember that Ramsey is still young and not been under a real coachs guidence until gibbs and last year he was not even the opening starter.I see alot of the same things going on with Ramsey that happened with Mark Rippen.Remember that all three super bowls gibbs won, they had a terrible pre-seasons.I hope history can repeat it's self.Anyway Mark Rippen was playing so terrible at the start of the '91 season that he threw five interceptions in one game.Ramsey just like Mark just needs to make better decisions thats all.I know coach gibbs will calm down this week and try and get threw to that thick skull of ramsey's.I don't know if brunell is the answer just yet, hasn't played against the first string guys.I'm not in panic mode yet, but if it's week three or four and ramsey still stinks then I will panic.

skinpride I was actually hopeful that the coaching staff has recognized this and they are trying to let Ramsey work on it during actual NFL games, which don't matter aka preseason! ;-) Let's hope that's the case.

First lay off Ramsey, but it appears that a lot of the posters here have to have someone to vent their own frustrations at. You all need a bunch of Prosac or a 6 pack or two. I meen you have more mood swings thnn an all girls high school on the "red" week. Watch the games, think a little and then write from your heads and not your hearts.

Fact #1 - Ramsey has thrown more Ints than TDs only once in his carreer (10 TDs - 11 INTs - last year) (2 TDs and 5 INTs were in the 2 games he came off the bench on) (He threw 7 TDs and six INTs the rest of the way).
Fact #2 - His only year as a stsrter he threw 14 TDs and 9 INTs (played most of the year with a broken foot) and he was sacked 30 times that year and didn't make it out of the month of November.
Fact #3 - in his three NFL seasons he has thrown 5 more TDs than INTs

Doesn't anyone want to see what this kid can do with a full year as a starter with a HOF head coach?

If it wasn't Ramsey you all would be jumping on Nemo for fumbling the ball at the end of the game, Clifton Smith for not recovering that fumbled punt that he SHOULD HAVE SCORED WITH, or Moss for losing a TD in the lights. Because you HAVE to have something to "complain" about.

Get off Patrick!

OWE YEAH one more thing, it is Freaking PRESEASON!!!
not freaking out season!

By the way I was happy to see Rod "50/50" Gardner score the first points against us this year (because of all of you from the lets get Gardner out of here fan club)

Tom Brady's QB rating this preseason: 49.4
Carson Palmer: 57.9
Patrick Ramsey: 57.9
Aaron Brooks: 71.4
Jamie Martin: 121.2
Seneca Wallace: 97.3
Mark Brunell: 81.0
Todd Bauman: 94.1

Is anyone else noticing a pattern here? The preseason doesn't really matter. So by the theory of many people on this board, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Aaron Brooks, and Patrick Ramsey should each be benched. While, due to a couple of good performences in the preseason Jamie Martin should start for the Rams, Seneca Wallace should start for the Seahawks, Todd Bouman should start for the Saints and Mark Brunell should start for the Redskins. This is statistical evidence that against the 2nd and third team defenses even the Jamie Martin's of the world can look like Pro-Bowlers.

You may as well get used to the idea of fans complaining about the play of Ramsey because it is well deserved whether some of us want to face it or not. All the excuses for a QB that's been in the league four years now, and still makes the kind of bone-head plays he makes at the most inopportune times in just riduculous. There is no excuse, and to continue to accept this kind of medioricy with such lame defence is irresponsible. The second INT he threw last night had absolutely no chance to be complete at all when he threw it. Ramsey's decision making in many instances is very poor, and unless he finds a way to improve in the near future, he will continue to cost the team scoring chances along with the ability to win football games on any consistent basis.

It is NOW or NEVER for Ramsey. He has a great deal of potential....but when will it be fulfilled?

I was at the Carolina game last week and I was seeing the last 3 seasons all over agian. Preseason....bla..bla....

How many times has Ramsey led a great drive into opposing territory to throw an interception and cost us big? Mistakes and interceptions will always happen...no one is perfect, but the good ones learn from their mistakes and don't repeat them over and over.

Ramsey can trash this season early for us if this silly crap isn't fixed. I see our QB situation ending up in Jason Campbell's hands by week 10 at this rate. Call it what you want, but this might be the best thing for the franchise. Ramsey will be gone after this year, Brunell doesn't have much left, and Campbell was drafted to be the future.

I will support Patrick, and I want him to do good like anyone else does, but I want to support a winning team this year, whether or not it is with him, and the only team I will support is the Redskins....or anyone who beats the cowboys :P .......

Remember Ramsey is not his guy, he brought Brunell in and drafted Campbell. He knows Ramsey is popular here and realizes the mistake he made by letting Brunell play hurt last year. Now Brunell is healthy and playing well. Gibbs will allow Ramsey to sink or swim this year, but in no way will he give Ramsey as long a leash as he did Brunell last year.

As for Ramsey performance last night it was not great or horrible. Gibbs called more passing play for him than he did Brunell and when the season starts the running game will be Ramsey’s best friend. I want to see Ramsey make the next step...he need to start doing the little things that make up a good NFL QB, like throwing the ball away to avoid sacks, throwing the ball into the stands when the receiver is not open in the end zone and seeing the entire field…on the long pass to Patten last night, Royal was running wide open down the middle of the field and would have scored if Ramsey had seen him.

So what if he threw some deep balls last night(we all knew he could do that) he throws way to many picks and not enough touchdowns. Poor decision making. This has been his story since coming into the league besides the fact that he holds the ball to long and the obvious that he can't move in the pocket. Pat was like this last year too (more interception than TD's) in the limited amount of starts he had. He had like one perfect game last year and now he is our starter again by default (poor play by Brunnell last year and a rookie that needs more snaps). He has no consistency, no game to see the field, and sometimes can't make the adjustment to get the ball to the receiver. We all know deep down that Pat is not a great QB (average at best, a good back-up) and probably will never be one here in Washington. He can't take us to the playoffs. We just keep giving him the benefit of the doubt because of Spurrier, different playbooks, O-line play, and the fact that he hasn't had enough chances to really start but all that is over. Why the loyalty? Has Ramsey really shown us anything besides the fact that he has an arm since he has been here? Gibbs is no dummy...he knew what kind of QB he had prior to coming back to Washington and that is why Brunnell got snatched up so fast in the offseason his first year and we drafted a QB so high in the draft this year. But we all seem to scratch our heads at the moves Gibb's has made at QB thinking that he is trying to dethrown some great QB. Not me..I see it clearly, Patrick Ramsey is no good. Ramsey hasn't changed at all and if he continues to make these mistakes in the preseason he will be either on the bench watching Brunnell play at the start of the season or leading us to another losing season. We need a change at QB to have a chance this year. Does anyone else see this?

Ramsey's played a total of four quarters this pre-season, has thrown for three interceptions and 1 TD, and almost 300 yards. Take a breath. He's played the equivalent of an OK minus game. Brunell didn't play such a good game all last year (at least I don't remember him doing it). Also note: Moss should have caught another of Ram's passes for a TD. It's also true that none of Ramsey's interceptions were caused by poor decisions: his first slipped off his hand. The other two passes were simply missed passes and not that far off the mark. Give him a break. Four quarters of Ok football with great flashes is not a deal breaker.

WHAT???????? NONE OF HIS INTERCEPTIONS WERE CAUSED BY POOR DECISIONS???? What games are you watching???? His whole m.o. is stupid decision making: throwing again and again into double coverage.

Man you people would defend Ramsey if he were Osama Bin Laden's clone.

What is this love affair with him???? I don't understand why people want to stick with such a loser.

I think a lot of the people who defend Ramsey are those who have met him at camp and saw how much of a nice guy he is. If I met him at camp and he was a really cool guy like everyone says, I would probably be one of the die-hard supporters too. However, I have never met him and my opinion of him forms by what I see on TV. It gets old seeing Ramsey making a great play and then immediately turns the ball over on the next. I get tired of seeing "flashes". I want to see consistency. Patrick Ramsey is the NFC's Kyle Boller. Before this season started, I was really hoping Ramsey would have a break out season. It is still possible, but he hasn't shown any signs of it this preseason. What good does it do if you can complete a nice long pass and then throw a boneheaded pick the next? You don't win games that way.

Did you read this thead?? Not to mention the local media and fans openly criticizing Gibbs for starting Brunell over Ramsey last year

Not horrible? 2 interceptions and 1 red zone bonehead turnover? What game were you watching?

Redskins/Bengals...I also said he didn't do great, guess you missed that part. As I said Gibbs didn't call many running plays for Ramsey, I think he want to get Ramsey as many reps as he can get him. Yes he had the two Int's..care to offer any more analysis then that?

A humble plea: let's give Ramsey a chance. Let him learn, cheer him on, sit quietly if he fouls up, but support him as long as he plays for our team.

No, I'm not pleased about the way he's playing, at least from listening to the game. However, I'm not Joe Gibbs, the man who knows QB's, and who reads the game films.

Last year, I argued that if Gibbs chose to start Brunnell over everybody's favorite, Ramsey, then we ought to respect the coach's decision.

Same thing goes now that Ramsey is first choice.

This is the best Redskin Fan site on the web and we all know it, but some have forgotten there is a OHficial web site of the Washington Redskins that has this feature called Redskin.comTV (about the only thing left there thats worth the click).
There is a video there were Gibbs says...
amoung other things said something like - Brunell will get no reps with the starting unit. He also stated Mark will be solid BEHIND Patrick.

Ramsey said he felt better about the passing game and that it was what they were looking to do, but the turnovers killed all of that. He said the Skins would have scored atleast 17 in the first half if not for the picks. He first pointed out the blame for said turnovers rested squarely with him.

So there you have it... The Head Coach and the starting QB saying everything is ok just a little bumpy.

Maybe Brunell WAS injured last year and that effected his play I don't know. But as things stand Patrick is the starter and Mark is the Backup with no one at Redskin Park even hinting a change. I'll continue to trust Joe.

can't believe this is actually a thread, Ramsey is and should and will be the starter opening day. Is this thread serious? Come on, it's a joke right!! You people, the same ones who booed Brunell less than a year ago, the same people who chanted "We want Ram-see!" until you finally got him, now you want Gibbs's proclaimed starter wearing a headset again? Among the many misguided, ill-conceived thoughts surrounding Gibbs's football team: Ramsey better be good early. Or else. The idea being, Brunell could take over in Week 2, Auburn rookie Jason Campbell in Week 8 and Ramsey again in Week 11. Great. By December, every Washington quarterback's psyche will be destroyed. What symmetry that would be, the same chaotic, instant-gratification strategy that landed Washington a slew of big-name, small-time free agents and a litany of egocentric, overpaid coaches. Look, Ramsey may not be heading to the Pro Bowl this season. He may not be markedly better than his veteran backup and good friend, Brunell. But give the kid a shot, a real shot -- not a few meaningless preseason possessions and maybe the season opener. Let him be. For just two straight possessions.

I stopped valuing your post in sentence one, when you said that Ramsey through three picks. The fact is that he thrrew two, not three, and that this is a stupid thing to discuss.

Months ago most of you were plotting Mark Brunell's murder. Ramsey averaged 22 yards a completion, and had 190 yards in one half of football. That's more than Brunell did in six of nine games last last season. Sure he made two awful passes, but when he learns to eat the rock he'll be golden. I'm not saying I'm perfect but he gives the team the best chance to win... BY FARRRRR!!!!

This is preposterous and asanine. Now I know why I, a die-hard Redskins fan whose attiute for weeks at a time is decided by the outcomes of Redskins games hate my own home crowd. Give me a break. We haven't even gotten to the opener and we're ready to bring someone off the bench.
