First of all, you really need to speed your backswing up...if you are narcoleptic, then I understand. Secondly, get a close friend to play with, toss back a couple brewskis, and enjoy the serene environment.

Golf rules. I've been playing since I was 2! 5 really, but it's a great sport. Harder than any other sport I've tried. It's a game of consistency and finesse. I can understand people who just go out to relax, drink and have a good time. But if you try to get better, it turns into a chess match with yourself. Try it if you've never been. I find that the most challenging games give you a better sense of accomplishment when you play them well.

That's probably the BEST way to explain why people like to play golf - and true. Everyone has that 'great' shot at least once if you play enough. And every other time you hit 'that' shot, it confirms to you exactly why you keep playing.

I try to play at least twice a week, which is probably necessary in order to realize significant improvements in your game. It's just like everything else - practice, practice, practice. And the best part is, if I'm having a mediocre round, the beer buzz and sunshine definately help take the edge off. It also helps me to see my golf buddy throw his clubs after a bad shot (which he breaks on occassion)...I just laugh and go, "what an idiot"

I try to play at least twice a week myself. I took this past Tuesday off to go play this course in VA with a few friends. Shot a 77. But I bogey'd the last 4 holes. It was only the 2nd round of the season though. So I wasn't that bent out of shape.

I think it's hilarious watching people get that upset and frustrated. It's a game!!! I obviously never laughed when I was teaching though. But when I'm playing a round, totally different story. I've seen some crazy things. I've seen people wrap clubs around trees, jam a putter into a green, take the flag and stick it into the green (not in the hole, actually happened in a H.S. tournament), throw a club or clubs in a water hazard among a million other things.

Keep practicing, you'll enjoy it and you'll get better. Golf is like a carousel, circular, round. Harness good, block bad, harness good, block bad.

77 huh? I've played about 30 rounds this season so far, and my best score is a 77...only that's in Frederick, which means my handicap at a 'real' course normally approaches +10-20.

Yep, 77. Doubled the first hole. Birdie'd the next two. Ended the front 1 over. Played the first 5 on the back even and finished horribly. I think the beer was kicking in at that point. I'm one of those guys who doesn't play better when drunk or drinking. I was trying to just relax and have fun rather than go after the course record. Those rounds are reserved for July through September.

Which course in Frederick? Clustered Spires? That is a bombs away course and a half. I actually took my P.A.T. there. Very easy.

If you ever get a chance, play Whiskey Creek if you haven't played it yet. My favorite course in all of MD and VA.

no, no, no...I actually haven't played Clustered Spirals yet, but my good friend (who, if he applied himself, should be on the PGA tour) raves about that place. Also Musket Ridge.

I started this post with the , because I think I may have given you a false impression that I am better than I really am. A 77 is an amazing score for me, and unfortunately, I can only boast that accomplishment because the course I normally play at is crapola. Don't get me wrong, it is a golf course, but there is no Marshal, par is only at 69, and it plays probably about 1,500 total yds shorter than a 'good' course. Many par 4's can be driven, and my should-have-been-PGA-bound friend put me to shame when he came out one day.

This is the Fredrick Golf Club. I wouldn't be suprised if you have never heard of it. The thing is, while I would love to play Clustered Spirals, Redgate, Bull Run, etc. on a regular basis, you just can't beat the greens fees in Fredneck.

$17.50 = greens fees + cart (18 holes, weekdays)
$21.50 = greens fees + cart (18 holes, weekends)

That is more or less the only reason I am able to play golf 1-2 times a week! However, I am always down to play other courses whenever my friends decide to do so (they too are cheap ). Seems like I should know you...maybe I'll let you show me up some day

It's an excellent course. Check the pictures out. Especially the 18th hole! I highly recommend it. It has the GPS carts and everything. I really have fun when I'm out there. Very pricey so make it a special occasion. Ask the soon to be wifey to treat you for your birthday or something.

Yes, I have heard of that course in Frederick but I haven't actually played it. Drivable Par 4's? I guess the "Happy Gilmore" reference had some type of correlation in this conversation.

If I put the work in I'm pretty confident that I could get there or at least close. It's hard though. Working at a course and playing at a course are obviously two totally different animals. It burned me out on golf for a long time. I don't have time to practice like I used to either. But... what can ya do?

Hehe, I'm sure I'll meet a lot of you at camp and the tailgate parties. I have a few preseason tickets and season tickets already. Definitely looking forward to it.

GPS carts are an illegal activity? I'm going to assume you are talking about the dollar a hole thing. You don't need a bookie for $18. Who doesn't bet when they play golf? That's what the entire handicap system was designed for... Hehe, my friends and I bet when we play Golden Tee, amongst a ton of other things.

Unless there's a rule change that I'm unaware of, GPS carts fit into the same class as laser range finders and are deemed illegal.

On the betting end, I can't recall the last round I played where I didn't have some wager going on, even if was just a side bet on putts or greens hit or something.

We weren't talking about tournament play. We were just talking about playing. Correct me if I'm wrong Gibbs' Hog but I don't think you've played in a lot of tournaments? Again, no offense Gibbs' Hog but you seem like you just play for fun. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

It's a very cool feature that I've only seen at maybe 5 or 6 courses around here. If you're a decent golfer and know the distances of your clubs it's pretty cool if you've never seen it before. Agreed?

Would I rely on it for/in a tournament? Of course not. They wouldn't even have them turned on...

I disagree to the extent that the "rules of golf" are the "rules of golf" regardless if it's in a tournament or not.

Where exactly do you draw the line then?


And the betting. It may be illegal in whatever municipality you're playing, but it's not forbidden by either the USGA or R&A so it's good. (as long as an amatuer's total winnings are less than $750).

If either of you guys ever make a road trip north (I'm about 3 hours north of DC in Central PA), PM and I'll treat you to a round. My game's suffered since the older children got involved in activities, so I'm playing to an 11.6 now, but I was as low as 3.2.

I'd say you'd have to draw the line where you're not going to scare people that are new to the game away. Which I've witnessed first hand as my father was one of them. I used to get on him about "teeing it up in the rough" and he wouldn't care because it was me. Now, complete strangers on the other hand... that would irritate him. He was never the greatest golfer in the world but he liked to play. He enjoyed being out there probably more than he enjoyed the game. He stopped playing about 5 years ago...

Trust me, I'm very old school about golf. Anti-Hybrid clubs etc. Not that I don't think people should use them if they work for said person but you'll never find one in my bag. I'm no rule book Nazi but I'm very much a play it where and as it lies golfer. Cheating in golf is only cheating yourself.

I guess you draw the line between hardcore and casual. Most of these courses with the GPS charge extra for it. Blah. I can gauge distances pretty good with my eyes. Or you find the 150 and walk it off.

Curveball, the range finders are used by caddies everywhere. What do you think Tuesday and Wednesday's practice rounds are for? Thursday to Sunday they're illegal but they're definitely used for the practice rounds. That in itself should answer your question. These golfers who shoot in the 100's or over are essentially practicing. They're not going to jump into club tourney's or local amateur tourney's anytime soon. You need to learn to play before you play if that makes any sense.

Easy, you are correct...I just play for fun. I'm nowhere near tournament capacity yet. Regarding the GPS carts, that sounds cool to me...never used anything like that, but I'm with you - it's not cheating if you're just playin around. Either way, I'm not much of a yardage buff anyway; I tend to be able to see the distance fairly well with my eyes - something I have gotten used to in Fredrick due to the almost complete lack of yardage indicators.
