Lefty was my high school basketball coach when I was a freshman and lucky enough to be so far down on the bench I was beneath his radar. By the time I was ready to play he had transferred to another high school in the district and I had the pleasure of lighting it up against him on several occasions.
Lefty was always a no-class, low-level son-of-bitch and it was just sort of natural to hate his guts. He got his start in high school by lucking into the best player in the state, Leo Anthony, and then jumping the program when the talent went elsewhere, to Newport News, which he deserted as soon as the talent fled and jumped to Davidson, which enrolled 2 All Americans, Fred Hetzel and Dick Snyder, whom he couldn't help but win with.
I knew some of those guys- Hetzel, Snyder, Moser, et al, paid no attention to anything the sado-masichistic jerkface ever said and thus went on to glory. When they left, Lefty took his no-nothing self to Maryland and rode another excellent pack of athletes to prominence, in spite of himself- until his lack of class, knowledge, civilization, etc. caught up with him.
Lefty sucked as a coach his whole career and no one I know liked him. Better to be lucky than good, if you can follow it up by being a low-life, disloyal, job-jumping, son-of-a bitch not ashamed of taking credit for work done by boys.
