Cowboys say Nguyen isn't going to Saints
Dallas not trading middle linebacker, but it still wants Howard
01:13 AM CST on Sunday, March 13, 2005
By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING – The Cowboys still want New Orleans Saints defensive end Darren Howard, but they're no longer willing to part with middle linebacker Dat Nguyen to complete a deal, two sources said Saturday.
A source said Jim Steiner, Nguyen's agent, spoke to a team representative Saturday and was assured that Nguyen would not be traded. Initially, the Cowboys were willing to discuss an offer for Nguyen, but decided they didn't want to part with him, two sources said.
Nguyen, owner Jerry Jones and vice president Stephen Jones could not be reached for comment.
The Saints wanted Nguyen, who had a team-high 135 tackles with three interceptions last season, because he's a productive player, and he's close to Saints owner Tom Benson.
The Cowboys, though, still covet Howard.
A source close to Howard said the defensive end's agent spoke with Stephen Jones on Saturday, and he is expected to give Howard's agent a contract proposal today.
New Orleans made Howard, 28, its franchise player, and the Saints have tendered a one-year contract that will pay him $7.6 million this season, but the deal has not been signed.
If Howard doesn't sign the contract by 3 p.m. Monday, then he and the Saints can't negotiate a long-term deal that would help New Orleans lower Howard's salary-cap figure in 2005, until July.
If Howard can agree to terms with another team before the deadline Monday, then he could sign the tender, and his new club would have a 24-hour window to restructure the contract.
New Orleans reportedly wants at least a second-round pick for Howard. Howard, who had 11 sacks in 13 games last season, wants a long-term deal.
Howard will probably want a deal similar to the six-year, $33 million contract with a $14 million signing bonus that Grant Wistrom received from Seattle this month. Wistrom has 45 ½ sacks in seven seasons; Howard has 41 sacks in five seasons.

But I not sure we can afford him

Brown is definitely very talented.
It's not his fault the Browns are such a complete mess.
Pretty much all of their first round picks have been "busts". Seems like an organizationial problem to me.
I'd love to see what he could do in a great system like ours with his old Nittany Lion buddy LaVar.

I hope Dallas parts with Dat Nguyen. He is the heart of their D-fense IMO. If he is gone, I still like our chances against an upgrade at DE for Dallas with our two tackles and ever-improving front line on offense.
Also, I like Dat, and would love to see him wear another uniform so i could cheer for him!

The Washington Redskins will not be signing Darren Howard - if they do, I am prepared to eat my own shoes.
As for Courtney Brown - I think we'd be better off signing a hatstand. In fact, we'd be better off signing Faith Brown - probably not a name much known in the US, but she did do a reasonable Margaret Thatcher impersonation.
Actually, no she didn't - it was rubbish. Anyway, I digress. I think it's time for my bed bath...

I've got to think Courtney Brown would be a little better than
Unless she puts on a LOT of weight

I haven't followed him necessarily, but I've seen some of his games when he was completely healthy. He's as good as the freak used to be when he's healthy. He's missed 19 games out of 80 and played hurt in about half of the remaining games. Of course his stats aren't gonna be up there. Again, when he's healthy, there aren't too many guys better than him. Hence why I said sign him to an incentive laden contract. See, that way he earns his money. If he stays injury prone, we don't pay him much. If he pulls a Simms, and stays healthy the rest of his career, we just made a huge find.

Good grief 1niksder!
Are you from the old country, or do you just spend too much time looking up obscure "celebrities" on the 'net? There's no way Faith Brown ever became famous in the States.

Ryan Leaf was very talented... that is why the chargers took him #1 overall... but a bust is a bust....
you are correct their 1st rounders have been busts... i would say that means they don't judge talent well...

If memory serves, wasn't Kenard Lang a first rounder too? Some guys take a little longer to develop than others - some never make it.
I think Darren Howard would be a solid pick up for us -
I'm still holding out hope than Phillip Daniels will return to form, he can play - when he plays :0)

Is Daniels one of our senior citizens? Yea, we need to draft or acquire a DE to compliment/replace him.

I agree. He is their leading tackler. I don't think they are willing to part with him now. Someone must have slapped some sense into Jerry Jones.
