Raymer is fine, for now. At least he stayed relatively healthy. Lennie just didn't seem to have it this year. Face it...pedigree centers don't just fall into your lap every season. When you consider the way defenses have incorporated blitzes into nearly every down, you might have a little more respect for the guy in the middle of all that. It's a big job, and Raymer did okay. Great ? No. Better than Lennie, though.

I think with a year under these guys belt maybe they will improve a bit. I know we do need an upgrade or two in some places but an O-line will take some time. We passed some of that time last year.

i was wondering a similar thing... i won't pretend to know enough to say for sure, so this is a legitimate question-

is it possible that the poor production of the O-line was at least partially due to an outdated offensive system? i know that in theory blocking is pretty basic, you either get him out of the way or he gets you out of the way.
but when you are running the same few plays over and over and the defense is sending all kinds of extravagent pass-rush (and run-stuffing) schemes at you, can't it make it a difference? if they know where you're going, won't it be easier for them to find someone to get past you, or smother you?
our passing game was so horribly anemic that the defense could put as many people "in the box" as they wanted to stop the run. pretty hard for an O-lineman to push 2 or 3 people out of the way!

anyways, it's just a consideration. hopefully our line will play up to its potential and run whatever plays it can best succeed with next year.

all i know is something was wrong last year, something has to change- the plays, or the players. maybe it's some of both.

I'd like to see us replace Raymer and Dockery...both had average years. Both got pushed around in pass blocking -- badly. They were "owned" big time. I'd like to see us get two guys that are mean, guys that lead, guys that would bite the head off a toad...Neither of these guys are the tough guy/leader types that I'd like to see us add. Last year we had 5 quiet guys - no real leader...Brown, Samuels, Thomas and the other 2 are not rah rah types that motivate the others. Granted Jansen is this type and we missed him a lot this past year. He'll return but I'd like to see us add two very mean guys (Grimm types) to:

Samuels
Thomas
Jansen

How about dipping our toe in FA and getting a stud Center, like Casey Rabach from Baltimore? Or, going cheap and getting Melvin Fowler from Cleveland once they dump him? I doubt they'll want a guy who can play only center behind Fain.

Dockery and Brown can be b-up guards, Raymer can hit the road. Friedman can be our b-up center (plus he can play guard), Wilson & Molinaro are our b-up tackles.

So the guy who backed up Raymer and the guy that the coaches didn't feel was worthy of replacing Raymer gets the nod OVER Raymer?

If the coaching staff didn't think Friedman was WORTHY OF GETTING THE STARTING JOB BACK (he started the first few games)... why is he MORE qualified to be the back-up? This is the exact type of non-sensical babble thast keeps me out of Raymer discussions.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

It's interesting how you say, on one hand.."this is what keeps me out of Raymer discussions," but you're commenting anyway...Make up your mind and read my entire post man -- Friedman over Raymer because he can play BOTH guard and center...Raymer is a center only (and a pretty horrible one at that). You get flexiblity when a guy can back-up more than one position on the o-line. Friedman is a very smart player, he was blamed for the fumbles this year, I'm not sure it wasn't Brunnel running scared. Friedman was our center two years ago and did a pretty fine job, better than Raymer did this year. Raymer makes more money than Friedman too. I close with -- Marty S let Raymer go before the year began, we all now know why...he's washed up. Marty would have kept him if he wasn't.

Hey Fred first of all perhaps you should have a little respect for the man that gives you a place to talk football. Your post makes it sound as if you have an attitude.

Secondly Friedman can play center??? He dropped the ball more then once. So I guess your idea of being able to "play" two positions is not quite the same as mine. While I don't think we have enough evidence on how he performs as a guard, Raymer's out performed him in the Center position and again I'll say the decision isn't yours or mine. So all of this is just something to keep us busy in the off season. If Bugel and Gibbs don't think Raymer belongs here we'll know, otherwise I think he did a decent job. And why the hell doesn't he get the same "learning the offense" card that is played everytime someone on the offense is liked around here???

yeah, guess I was a bit over the top there...Attitude? No, just defending myself...I just felt the need to point out the contradiction in his words...if I ticked him off, I'm sure he'll tell me.

As you said, none of us will be making the decisions on who stays and who goes but it sure is fun to argue about it.

I do agree that Friedman ain't the greatest thing around but I do believe he has more value than Raymer as a backup. I know Friedman (or Brunnel) dropped the ball early in the year, but I'm not sure it was all Friedman's fault.

I'm sorry but I don't want either of them.

Friedman vs. Raymer?

No.

Its not even debatable. Raymer (in my own opinion) isnt that good and Friedman isn't either. Their both not the options I think we want. Cut Friedman and put Raymer as backup. Friedman may be a jack of all trades but indeed he is a master of none.
