Lost in the aftermath of another Brunell stinker is the fact that the Skins had virtually no rushing game and no rushing first downs. The absence of Samuels and Portis obviously factors in here, but the backup running game (backs and run blocking) has been atrocious thus far.

We all know that we need better line play. It sounds like Jansen did a better job today.

On the other side of the coin at QB, Collins has been solid for 2 games and should seriously be considered for #2 if his solid preseason continues.

I think that we should try to get atleast a 6th rounder for Brunell.

Well, when I logged on this morning and read the headlines about Campbell and Washington, and then read that Espy was out for the season, then all seemed to be doom and gloom. And that was ignoring the fact that we lost the game.

But, reading into the details, I'm encouraged by the progress made since last week.

The defence is back. Landry and McIntosh look like major upgrades, and Fletcher is the leader that we needed. It seems like the D is back to swarming to the ball and getting after people. Admittedly, I haven't seen the game, but that's what the press seem to be saying.

Campbell took a big step forward. I have seen some highlights of his performance courtesy of nfl.com, and some of those throws looked pretty good to me. We all know how important this guy is to us this year, and his performance gives me a lot to pin my hopes on. Let's just hope that the initial diagnosis of a bruised knee is correct.

Todd Collins seems to be looking like a genuine NFL back-up QB. I'd hate to see the guy start, but Brunell is moving down the depth chart with the way things are going.

The starters won their battle, a touchdown was scored, and it was scored by Brandon Lloyd. All reasons to be cheerful.

The running game and the o-line remain as significant concerns, but we won't really know where they are until Samuels returns. His absence has an impact all down the line, IMO.

All in all, I'd give this one a B. If we can just get a running game going, and protect the QB, then this team can really go places.

Okay, a few "morning after" comments after being at the game last night.

First, I am really very impressed by the Redskins defense - both starting and scrubs. They are really showing me something this preseason!

Second, Jason Campbell and the starting offense looked okay to me, especially ey.

Third, I would have liked to have seen Palmer come in at the end of the game instead of Brunell.

On a side note, I'll tell y'all something pretty cool that happened.

This kid sitting in front of me was mentally challenged. Nice enough kid but he was wearing a Lavar Arrington jersey! WTF!?!?!

About 3 minutes before half time, I ask the young man "What is your shirt size"? Armed with that information, I promptly went up to the Redskins store and bought him a ey jersey....telling him to take off the Arrington jersey and replace it. His eyes lit up and he gladly did it.

What made it even cooler was at half time, Chris ey walks up to the kid, gives him his game glove and signs it for the kid. This kid had a great night, huh?

Back to the game, all in all, not bad. I don't care we didn't win. I think we'r getting better. I just hope that the injuries aren't too bad. When Espy was carted off the field right in front of me, his face looked pretty bad. Not surprised his injury is severe.

Too funny on NFL network. I'm watching the complete game replay now and in the 1st half, it was Joe T. and another doing the play by play.

The 2nd half has 2 other guys doing the play by play..... What's up with that?

The network does whatever it wants.

I think we made vast improvement on our offense this week. The defense continues to be very impressive. The teams did pretty good. All in all, except for the injuries, I liked what I saw, except the game management at the very end.

Ok, saw the game.

Props to ey, Jason, Todd, Lloyd, Rocky, Carlos, Landry, the d-line, the whole defense and the back-up defense. Coach Williams has done a nice job so far.

I was actually very encouraged by this game, especially with the defense. Offensive units are always slow to get rolling, but I like what I see from Jason and once Portis is back, they will do just fine.

Even though we lost, I see a lot of improvements to both sides of the ball.

Jason and Marcus should be fine. I feel bad for Espy though.

The o-line looked much improved. Gibbs said Tomlin used a ton of blitzes and stunts, so that, IMO, was good for this unit to experience.

I'm very sorry, but I'm steadily losing faith in Brunell. He had a chance at the end of that game. He made one nice throw down the middle to Hoag, but all the rest of his throws were very high and the receivers never had a chance. For those of you that know me, I rarely complain and bash players, but Brunell just doesn't seem to have it anymore.

One final note - I really like Mason and hope he finds a way to earn a spot, somewhere, on the roster.

No one went out, there wasn’t even a play called…just a spike to stop the clock. All that needed to be done was a running play to center the ball for a (40 yard) field goal…game over!
There was plenty of time to center the ball and then spike it if needed…I say if needed because Pittsburgh would have probably taken a timeout in that spot. Cleary this was the coach’s fault for not being decisive, you could tell Brunell was waiting for the play. It’s preseason for the coaches too...this is a area we have done a poor job with the past two year…and based on last night it’s still it.

The oline looked better but still wasn't all that great imo. They did give up 3 sacks yesterday, even though Collins was to blame for one of them. On the other two sacks Steelers defenders got a free shot on our qb. Also, in the running game our line was getting absolutely no push whatsoever. They are getting better but they still have a long way to go before the season starts.

Clock management is obviously still a problem for the coaching staff. I wonder how much this has to do with Gibbs and Saunders both having imput in the play calling.

No. But I would have heard it on my Sirius radio on the way home! Sorry, but I just can't stay until the end of a preseason game. My bad, I suppose.

They are re-airing the game right now on the NFL Network and I'm really impressed with Rocky. What a difference from last year. His offseason work that Coach Williams speaks of is clearly evident. Rocky is flying all over the place. Great speed and good instincts.

This has baffled me since Gibbs got back. This isn't a Saunders issue, it's a Gibbs issue. He's had problems managing the clock and I don't understand how... We get a veteran QB that he loves and he doesn't allow him to manage the game.

I hope that JC has the audacity to not wait for the coaches and just call his own play like he did last year.

I watched the game on NFL network yesterday. Not as bad as you put it. Sure, the -SECOND- stringers got late on to move to the line. I do not know if this was the play call or anybody else's fault. Not good but we should not expect that to happen with the -STARTERS-.

By the way, defense played very well -and- they were playing a fairly vanilla scheme. There were no fancy blitzes or surprises. Pass rush was not good but only the four front were really rushing the passer without Griffin, which makes our D line 100% better. Marcus will help around the edges.

Brunell played a game worthy of a 3rd string QB. Right now, based on what I have seen, even Collins deserves the 2nd spot.

I am flabbergasted that they would not give a chance to Carson at this point just for a try. A veteran well past its prime does not need much of a preseason practice.

I am only CAUTIOUSLY optimistic about this season. Certainly not a Superbowl run team. Hopefully at least good enough for a playoff spot. And no, I am not basing my opinion on preseason alone. There is moch more to this. Sorry.
