Actually Sean was with me in the book depository that day.

Two Carey is a great Ref!!

Carey is by far my favorite zebra. He's always done good by me. I mentioned that in earlier in this thread and was blasted for it. He doesn't seem to be a ref who throws flags for what he MAY have seen. I hope we get him again.

It is a common reaction after some one spits in your face to:
1. pull your head back or to the side and/or try to duck
2. reach up and wipe the spit off!

Pittman did neither. Hmmm...

Didn't look like the spit really hit him. I suppose that's besides the point anyway.

This whole ordeal is ridiculous. WHo knows exactly where Sean was aiming, regardless he shouldn't have done what he did. I'd like to see him make a public apology to his fammily, coaches, team, skins fans, NFL and to pittman. Not some half done TO like apology. THis isn't how you repay people who stick up for you.

Also did you see Gibb's reaction when told that ST spit?? Or some of the guys on the D when told by Carey what ST did?
Chris I agree a apology would go a long way..to Sean credit he's been a good guy this year with the fans off the field...time will tell if it was genuine or just done become of his upcoming trial

Sadly even if it is genuwine its going to get spun that way by the media.

"In the shadow of his impending trial, Redskins FS Sean Taylor apologizes for spitting on RB Michael Pittman."

An apology would be an admission of guilt. If Sean knows in his heart that he was NOT trying to spit in the guys face, than he owes no one an apology. If he WAS trying to spit in Pittmans face, than Sean should apologize; mostly to the team and coaches. My 2 cents

Thats the thing, we dont know where/why he was trying to spit. The thing is I think you should bend over and turn your face if you need to hawk one like that. Sean didn't budge an inch which doesn't help his case.

How did you get this information? This is a serious breech of security.
If convicted of this heinous crime you will be sent to watch CFL games for the Grey Cup playoffs!

In looking at the play during the game I was just pissed that the official didn't throw a flag at Pittman and call "off-setting"! Then after hearing that Taylor was ejected - the only concern was his availability!

I'm not sure exactly how this went down within the team. We have only what the team has released or the reporters have distorted.
I just want him to continue to be able to be a part of this defense as he is a very talented player.
I know that he is young but he better be very careful but at the same time as devastating as possible.
I'm sure the crowd will give him a hard time but that is to be expected - that is part of the game and it goes with his status as a "bad" player.

I also think that an apology that is "handled" by the team and done properly would go a long way - that might not be something Gibbs is comfortable with however!
I'm sure this will be handled by both Williams and Gibbs at the appropriate time & that is not until after this season.

I agree, Carey is a great Ref and I used to think he was a tool because of how emphatic he is when he makes the calls, but he really is a good ref...he was evenhanded as well, ejecting ST and not Pittman, and having the balls to call incomplete on the Touchdown...he and Ed Hochuli are two refs that I would love to have on our games.

Yes to both - very good show - just watched it myself.

Carey looks and sounds positively robotic most of the time.
Since the spit didn't hit...you got to flag Pittman for the slap. Just because somebody else provoked you doesn't mean you get a free swing. Referees are not supposed to take "What would I do ?" scenarios into consideration. A swing is a swing.

Sorry TC - but I think this guy is a good official. Yes he's a little "stiff" but this guy does a good job IMO!

I do agree however that he should have called offsetting penalties - he still could have thrown Taylor out of the game for what he thought he tried to do but I think you are absolutely right in that he should have called Pittman on that - that is not a judgement he should have made - you hear him saying "I can't blame him for throwing a punch" = WRONG!

I didn't mean to say he was a bad official. What I meant to get across was, most of the time, he's by the book (hence, the "robotic" thing). In this instance, he allowed his personal feeling to get in the way of what should have been an ejection, but no loss in field position by way of offsetting penalties.

In every sport I ever played (not that I'm some kind of great athelete or anything), if you spit on the field you were ejected, regardless of whether you spit AT or hit anyone.

Is that why you're not a great athlete ? Repeated ejections ? :)
In my short career (never as an athlete, though), I personally never saw an ejection for spitting...although there were a handful for taunting and a good many for late hits.
Spitting on opponents just isn't (or wasn't) part of the Modified/Freshman/JV sports scene...although I'll be the first to say that the face of the modern athlete is changing by the minute. The culture is being negatively affected by showboats and highlight hitters. Kids learn that the only way to separate themselves from the pack is to stand out...one way or another.

Good point TC It is a changing scene. I wish the officials enforced the unsportsmanlike/taunting rule much more.

I also understand your point cville, I also think that it is never, ever, okay to spit at someone or on the ground near them as a means of taunting.

I just felt that the ref was right in his call but we also know that players are never allowed to retaliate and Pittman obviously did. Now we all know why but the ref should have IMO ejected Taylor but also penalised Pittman - that is just the rules and IMO the official only got part of it right!

Never played baseball, huh? There would not be anyone left on the field... they spit all the time.
