Grant Paulsen‏@granthpaulsen

With the list of cuts the #Redskins just sent out, I'm only counting 52 players. They must have left a spot open to claim somebody else

Anybody want to guess where he is going with this open spot?

RB? or OL?

My guess: The player who can make the biggest impact at one of those positions.

My reasoning: Trying to trade for Slaton and of course, obvious need for quality tackles.

Here are the 52

When you think you have made the team, check again. Markus White does not make the team as earlier reported and that leaves a spot open.

Rich Tandler updates his list after the Official Redskin list is released:
After looking at the official list of cuts, the Redskins have 52 players on their roster.

There is one spot open, perhaps for a player to be acquired in a trade or in a waiver claim.

To be sure, there could be surprise or two still in waiting. And trades and waiver claims could further shake things up. But here is how it appears that it stands right now, with some quick analysis.

Specialists

In (3): P Sav Rocca, LS Nick Sundberg, PK Billy Cundiff

This was set earlier this week when Neil Rackers and Graham Gano were released and Cundiff was signed.

Defense

Defensive backs

Cornerback (4): DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Cedric Griffin, Richard Crawford

Safety (5): Brandon Meriweather, Madieu Williams, DeJon Gomes, Reed Doughty, Jordan Bernstine

The suspension of Tanard Jackson, who would have been one of the top three safeties, helped Bernstine land a spot. It is still somewhat odd that they are keeping four corners and five safeties and this is one of those areas where further moves could be made.

Linebackers

Outside (4): Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan, Rob Jackson, Chris Wilson

Inside (4): London Fletcher, Perry Riley, Lorenzo Alexander, Keenan Robinson

It was thought to be a battle between Wilson and White for the last roster spot but it turns out that both of them made it and Bryan Kehl was shown the door.

Defensive line

In (6): Stephen Bowen, Jarvis Jenkins, Adam Carriker, Kedric Golston, Barry Cofield, Chris Baker

Offense

Running backs (4): Roy Helu Jr., Evan Royster, Darrell Young, Alfred Morris

The shocker of the day was the release of Tim Hightower. It was thought that the team would wait out until his knee, injured last October, got close to 100 percent.

Tight ends (3): Fred Davis, Niles Paul, Logan Paulsen

No drama here after Chris Cooley was released on Tuesday.

Wide receivers (7): Pierre Garçon, Leonard Hankerson, Josh Morgan, Santana Moss, Aldrick Robinson, Brandon Banks, Dez Briscoe

Banks will be more of a kick returner than a wide receiver so there are really six here. Briscoe beat out Anthony Armstrong for the last spot. Most thought Briscoe was the superior receiver during training camp and the preseason but there was a chance that Armstrong’s special teams play could keep him on the roster.

Quarterbacks

In (3): Robert Griffin III, Rex Grossman, Kirk Cousins

Rex Grossman was never, ever in any danger of being cut.

Offensive line

In (9): Trent Williams, Kory Lichtensteiger, Will Montgomery, Chris Chester, Tyler Polumbus, Josh LeRibeus, Jordan Black, Adam Gettis, Maurice Hurt

While none of the individual names here is a surprise the overall number is. The Redskins have kept eight offensive linemen the last two years. But they did get burned to an extent last year when a rash of injuries hit the line.

Big if. He's only played 19 games in the past 3 years.

My guess is that they have identified some guys who will be available after tonight. Maybe an OT like Ryan Harris from Denver--a former Shanahan pick.

We are fairly high in waiver priority at 6th I believe.

He's had dislocated toes that have apparently hobbled him. But, otherwise no real serious, surgeries etc. He could be a find as a backup to Polumbus. He's talented.

Actually, I stand corrected. He had back surgery last year.

I think that Ryan Harris is a good bet to be arriving at Redskin Park to take a physical tomorrow.

52 could also mean the possible return of Cooley. Just a thought.

We all know how MS loves his draft picks. Kory Lichtensteiger was his first free agent acquisition who came in a supplanted Derrick Dockery when many people were wondering what we were thinking.

Ryan Harris could benefit from a fresh start in the ZBS. Still young also.

Grant Paulsen ‏@granthpaulsen. For those asking, Brandyn Thompson is not eligible for the practice squad. He'll likely be playing elsewhere this season.

That sucks. He's better than Cedric Griffin. He stood out to me last year as a good cover corner.

Steve's Twitter doesn't mention any moves. His last tweet 2 hours ago says he is still a Dolphin.

He is on the final 53 of the Dolphins.

BTW - they did trade an OL to the Cowboys for a draft choice.

I agree that his cover skills were good, but I think his special teams play cost him - especially in the Bears game.

Griffin got the veteran nod here.

Crawford is being groomed for the slot position - that's the speculation.
Gomes played some CB in College, he is expected to add depth there.

I'm pretty sure Berstine played some CB in college too.

I expect (read hope) Crawford will supplant Griffin before the middle of the season.

You are correct about Bernstine and might prove to be correct about Crawford.

Claimed Off Waivers (by Redskins)

Hogshaven is reporting this move

I hope this is not true. Only way this makes sense is for Special Teams. He's 6 foot 190 so he has decent size. But, I mean, really?

Your hope is confirmed - PS pick up

Here are the players who have been signed to the Redskins' practice squad, per various media reports.

A maximum of eight players can go on the practice squad.

OT Tom Compton
DE Doug Worthington
CB Crezdon Butler (ex-Cardinals)

That makes more sense. I initially thought we signed him to the 53. With his size, and performance his junior year, he may be a candidate to play some safety down the line.
