One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that with the profit sharing that goes on in the NFL between clubs, they're sticking it to two of the largest contributes to this cause. The majority of owners are biting the hands that feed them.

True. But, it's not like the Skins or Cowboys can opt out of the profit sharing deal. The teams are basically impotent and the other owners know it. Also, the owner of the Giants is in a big market himself.

Of course. I don't think there is any conspiracy theory here. I do think the other owners don't really like Dan Snyder (have heard lots of folks really like Jerry though - dive bar grab a beer kind of guy) and this is one way they can gain some competitive advantage vs two teams who had plenty of money to spend in FA.

The timing of it all is fishy too. Why not announce this earlier? The league waited until the last minute to even announce the new salary cap, but it waited even later to announce this. Stinks on many levels.

The Cowboys didn't have much to spend in FA this year, though. After being hit with the $5 mill penalty this year they are now $2.7 OVER the cap. So without the penalty the has less than $2.5 million in room under the cap.

Any way you look at it for Washington or Dallas, it totally messed them up with their overall planning. The weirdest thing is that the NFL said they're not discussing it any further.

Don't know if this was posted already but this will make you even angrier we were the ones penalized.

wow! infuriating! but further evidence that should help us rip the NFL into SHREDS in court.

i see some people saying that the NFL has the CBA set up in such a way where this isn't considered collusion or something--- i don't see how that makes any difference whatsoever. they do not define what constitutes collusion; the law does. period.

Call me stupid but I don't really know what I'm looking at other than a large drop in salaries during 2011.

This penalty will not stand. Roger Goodell never ceases to amaze me. I was coming around to this guy, but this is just David Stern-esque.

Thats basically all it is. Look at Peppers contract. $34 million cap hit in 2010 and only about $13 million in 2011. If that isn't serious frontloading I don't know what is.

THIS STINKS

ESPN980 is saying (AND maybe 1niksder can confirm this) that the Redskins are hurt by this BUT ....

the good news is that with a little over 17 million in cap space available they will still be able to be competitive in free agency

The Redskins actually have more cap room (EVEN AFTER THIS) than they usually have

Based on this, 11 teams have more cap space than we do. So, while the penalty does hurt, we are still in a better position than most other teams with regards to the cap.

It's all going to come down to how they structure the new FA contracts. I think it's the base salary that is against the cap but I could be wrong.

NO QUESTION - this is going to mean a lot more negotiating, but we can add help at a number of positions if we really want to

we are going to have to hope that the players we want will also want to make a deal that both sides can live with

NO QUESTION we are going to need the FO to be VERY VERY good in managing this

I thought it was base salary plus the signing bonus divided by the number of years of the contract. I'm sure Nik's going to cover this for us...

We still don't know if our FO has accepted these cap penalties? We will find out soon enough.

I heard somewhere that they plan on fighting it.

If this discourages players from signing with us? Then the damage will have already be done. This cant go smoothly just cant see how it will end up without lawsuits.

Well if there is any positive to come out of this. Well we should all know SuperBowls are typically not won through free agency. So this should help our FO focus that much more on the draft selections they choose.

It would be wise to solidify the Oline if we are getting any free agents. I mean we have to protect our future QB.

I'm sure that this will stay in place - this about the owners' collusion BS - we are not able to actually "confess" to this

HOWEVER

I'm really hoping that this brings out the worst in-fighting amongst the owners

I'm looking for the NFL to be VERY embarassed by all of this

Here's my take on this..

The four letter Network’s Adam Schefter was first to report that the Washington Redskins and that team in Texas would be docked salary cap space for front-loading contracts paid during the uncapped year in 2010. The Cowboys lose $10 million, while the Redskins lose $36 million. The teams may split the amount by which they were docked over 2012 and 2013. The other teams in the league, save the Saints and Raiders, will be re-allocated additional money under the cap. This morning it was reported that both teams would have to lose at least half of their space back in 2012.

No reason to get into what the Redskins did wrong to warrant such a punishment less than 24 hours before the free agent market opens. To put it simple Bruce Allen was totally correct yesterday when he said ''Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner's office,''.

The Washington Redskins did nothing wrong but will lose $18 million in cap space that would have been available for them to use at 4PM toady. What does that mean? It means the Redskins reported $40 million under the cap as went down to $22.7 million. Take into account the Rookie Pool (at least $5.5M) and space for Performance Based Pay ($3.46 million) the Redskins will have roughly $13,820,437 to use on free agent signings. Does that change the plan to surround RGIII with the tools they had hoped to get prior to all of this?

The Redskins may take this to court and may win if they do, but that won’t help them now. Now they will rely on Bruce Allen structuring contracts that will pay larger sums of real cash in years 2 and 3 of their deals, this will allow the team to do what they want to do now and allow the court process to play out and hopefully get the cap space back. Losing $18 million in cap space could kill most teams but these are the Washington Redskins… The Washington Redskins are at their best with limited cap space, look what happen when there was no cap.

Now that the market is open look how players are visiting teams..... How many have signed with new teams?

I may have jumped the gun on this though, the league did still say they "affected competitive balance". You'd have to think though that they will back off substantially if not 100%.
