Why bench AA? He had a breakout season & didn't even begin the year as starter.

I agree. I think Armstrong is going to be more productive this year than Santana Moss. If anything he should be promoted.

Here is a height and weight comparison of him and Moss and Austin since the biggest knock on him is his size and that he is a "lanky' 5'10" with very little strength to out muscle DBs for the ball.

I chose Moss for comparison because almost all the scouting reports on Robinson say that he is to be successful in the NFL, it will have to be at the slot. Folks are thinking that Moss will be our Slot receiver next year. I chose Austin because, he is clearly on the bubble this year and Robinson is close to his size.

Aldrick Robinson - 5' 10" 184
Santana Moss - 5'10" - 205
Terrance Austin - 5'11" - 175

http://www.redskins.com/team/roster.html

Robinson - 4.43 Combine 40 yrd dash
Austin - 4.52 Combine
Paul - 4.51 Combine
Santana Moss - 4.31 Combine (Just threw that in for kicks and grins)

Reports on Robinson: The only consistent knock on him is he is small and "frail," "lanky" and lacks a physical game. Everyone seems to agree that he is limited to the slot for the pros and that is why his draft stock slid.

http://www.fanaticalfootballfiend.com/3 ... ports.html

Can he return kicks?

He only returned 5 kick offs for his college career and no punt returns.
A statement by Wes Bunting can give an indication that he could be an outstadning kick returner. Wes Bunting can be found in the link above.

"Displays some wiggle and lateral quickness with the ball in his hands. Gets up to speed quickly, can make a man miss and create after the catch. He's a tough kid who isn't afraid to work the middle of the field as well."

Robinson's prospects on making the roster:

Robinson receiver coach at SMU, Jeff Reinebold:

"Last year, a scout told me that Emmanuel (Sanders) was the most advanced wide receiver he scouted, and this year, I had the same thing said to me about Al," Reinebold said. "One reason June has had so many players in the league is that he teaches the difference between knowledge and understanding, and the fact that you have to have both. Al has both. I'm biased, of course, but when look at some of the guys who were drafted ahead of him, he is so much more advanced as a receiver, the way he runs his routes, the way he uses his hands, the way he sets up defenders. He has gone from being just a fast kid to being a pretty polished receiver."

http://smumustangs.cstv.com/sports/m-fo ... aaa.html#_

I didn't list Robinson as one of my six, but I had him making the practice squad like Austin did last year. After my research. I am saying he makes the team (that means I have to give up on Malcolm Kelly, at least for now). I believe that he will prove to be a good kick returner, but it remains to be seen if he has the vision of Banks as a returns.

My Six right now are

Armstrong
Moss
Hankerson
Paul
Robinson
Banks

Here are college receiving stats for comparison:
Note* Maurice Price and Taurus Johnson have never causght an NFL regualr season pass. Also, Taurus Played for the South Florida Bulls - his destiny.

Aldrick Robinson

Brandon Banks

Niles Paul

First, Robinson outfoxed safety Chris Horton to haul in a long touchdown, slowing down as the ball hung in the air in order to make the safety think he was breaking off the route.

Shortly thereafter. the 5-foot-9, 180-pounder displayed excellent hands as he held onto a pass from John Beck while covered tightly by cornerback Kevin Barnes.

"I was impressed," Beck said. "He made some really good catches."

Not really thinking in terms of "benching" him at all. Just want guys we have picked, etc. to pan out. Rice is the kind of guy we need but I'd rather he be "home grown." Would be great if Kelly broke out. Red One had a solid take on him.

Still with you on hoping for Kelly. Shanny saw something in Armstrong to give him a shot. He must have seen something in Kelly to put him on IR instead of an injury settlement. I take it that that something was something other than a hammy pulling or a knee giving out. I haven't heard anything from Kelly. Let's hope that he has secluded himself on Revis Island and he is learning to get separation from the best of defenders and let's hope he has been getting medical treatment from a doctor not named Tony Galea. I have visions of Kelly, in a Redskin uniform, out leaping defenders in the back of the end zone for TDs.

Kelly Hopes His Injuries Are In the Past

Once a highly touted Redskins prospect, wide receiver Malcolm Kelly went into 2010 hoping for a breakout season. Derailed early by nagging hamstring injuries, Kelly was placed on injured reserve at the end of training camp.

Despite the disappointment, Kelly never stepped out on his teammates. Throughout the season, he stuck with the same routine that he would if he were playing.

“I was here for every single play in every single meeting and team meeting,” Kelly said after the 2010 season ended on Jan. 4. “That’s hard, coming to meetings every day, when you know you’re not going to be able to go out there and play.

“To some people, that’s pointless. But at the same time, it’s showing coaches that I want to be here, I want to be in the playbook, keep my mind on the playbook.”

After shutting Kelly down for the season, head coach Mike Shanahan let it be known that he was giving the receiver a chance to stay and make an impact in 2011, rather than cutting him outright.

“I think Malcolm has a lot of qualities you look for in a football player,” Shanahan said. “If I see the right type of work ethic and him doing the little things – the little things the right way – he's got a much better opportunity to be with us next year.”

This approach was not lost on Kelly. He compared his situation to that of fellow wide receiver Devin Thomas, who was cut by Shanahan in October.

Said Kelly: “I think Coach Shanahan let everybody know from the time he got here – everybody has a vibe that we aren’t the guys that he brought [here]. That means we have to show him that we want to be here and that we can play football.”

Being on the sidelines offered Kelly a different perspective than being on the field. In some respects, it offered him a better view of Kyle Shanahan’s offense, which takes time to grasp.

“It’s a wide-open scheme, it’s a wide-open offense,” Kelly said. “It’s a lot more complicated than people think. I think that after a year or two, I’ll be good with it.”

Kelly was selected in the second round (51st overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. At 6-4, 226 pounds, he possesses impressive size and physical tools necessary to be a dominant receiver.

“I think I’ll still be given an opportunity,” he said on Jan. 4. “I think if [Shanahan] didn’t want to give me an opportunity, he would have let me go during training camp. That’s how I look at it. By him keeping me around, it gives me a chance though.”

In his brief career, Kelly has 28 receptions for 365 yards, for a 13.0 yards-per-catch average. In 2009, he appeared in all 16 games, starting 10, and had a career-long reception of 84 yards against the Chargers in Week 17.

“I think that I can bring a different set of elements to the offense,” Kelly said. “We’ll just have to see how everything goes.”

I hope Kelly finally steps it up as well. Also hope the injury bug leaves him alone.

Thanks for the article. I was wondering when articles on him would start appearing. I would really have liked to have read in this article about what he was doing in the off season to better himself such as working out with some top players like John Beck did with Drew Brees, but at this point, it doesn't matter, it is time to show what he can do.

Another article on Kelly. Looks like he is genrating some interest.
It is great to see that he is attending the player workouts. If he is healthy, he will make my choice of six difficult. I had removed him for Aldrick Robinson. I will let things stand for now until training camp and preseason games start.

Kelly said he is now completely healthy. He displayed good explosion this week. The defense wasn’t as tight as it would be during a normal training camp practice, but Kelly turned in a few impressive catches. Now, if he can do that when coach Mike Shanahan and his assistants are watching, that will be the key, he said.

I guess I haven't been looking for articles on Kelly.
Even if he manages to stay healthy, the inability to separate could be the thing that does him in. I don't think that Shanny is ready to move on. Shanny likes competition. Let's see how Kelly responds.

Malcolm Kelly: Malcolm Kelly may not make the Redskins
Malcolm Kelly - WR - WAS - May. 27 - 1:31 pm et
Comcast Sports Washington's Rich Tandler doesn't believe Malcolm Kelly will make the Redskins' 2011 roster.
"Doesn't seem to be a Shanny-type player, think he's out," writes Tandler. We'd also point to Kelly's inability to separate and stay healthy, in addition to the Redskins' three rookie draft picks used on wide receivers. It's pretty clear they're ready to move on. The 51st overall choice in the 2008 draft, Kelly has just 28 career catches without a touchdown. May. 27 - 1:31 pm et

totally agree Kaz - I just remember that this guy used to have great hands and if he can get better prepared for the NFL, conditioning wise, he could help this WR corps

Of course this is if they re-sign Santana, if they do not I think they will grab another FA receiver, maybe V-Jax, or Sidney Rice.

I don't think they'll let go of either of them bro. Mcnugget will probably end up in Minn so they'll def. keep Rice and VJAX is the best WR Chargers have.. the others were all fill-ins for real.

Yeah. Even if they let them go, I doubt either would want to sign with us. Especially since we're not handing out the biggest contracts anymore.

I'd like to keep Moss and just keep rebuilding this franchise - I don't think he will want a stupid amount to stay

we are hopefully done with paying too much - the chances of doing well with players that just want a bigger paycheck are non-existent - we've seen Snyder try this for well over 12 years

we need to keep rebuilding and hope we can have a chance at the playoffs next year - I'd rather be a consistently good team and that is only possible with bringing in players that suit and not "paying and hoping"

I think V-Jax is franchised. I hope our big FA efforts are at other positions, like NT. We've invested 3 draft picks in WR's. we need NT. OG/C & assuming Carlos leaves, CB.

AAA will definitely be back and Hankerson may start his rookie season, from there the Redskins are a mystery at WR.

Some in the media say they will go out and sign a wide out in free agency, well if they do that they've filled 3 slots. I wouldn't mind and hope they resign Tana, but that still leaves at least 3 slots to be filled. The draft provided a look to the future, with Hankerson and Paul lining up outside and Robinson should be a good slot receiver. That's the future what about 2011?

Paul was a pretty good return guy in college but also plays on the cover units... What does that say about Banks who's still not 100% after running into the blade of a knife and doesn't/can't play on cover units.
Banks may have a better shot at keeping a roster spot than Williams and Kelly or may battle Austin for the last slot.

Will they keep 6 or will they keep 7.

I think they'll bring in a free agent and bring back Moss, I think all three rookies make the team (Robinson to the PS, unless rosters are expanded due to the lockout) and Williams and Kelly won't.

That leaves Banks, Austin, Johnson, and Price to fight it out for the last one maybe two spots. I could see Austin and Banks both gone.

Here's my best guess

Free Agent signing
Moss, Santana
Armstrong, Anthony
Hankerson, Leonard
Price, Maurice
Paul, Niles
Johnson, Taurus (if they keep 7)
Robinson, Aldrick (PS)

What's your's

Moss, Armstrong, and Hankerson have spots, that leaves three spots for the other eleven receivers to battle for.

Johnson, Price, and Williams aren't going to last long, Austin, Robinson and Paul could land on the practice squad leaving six Kelly, Stallworth, Banks, Stokley, and Gaffney competing for those three spots.

Austin, Banks, and Paul will also compete for the return duties bring the number of WR slots down to two. Again I'll guess Banks is the odd man out and the loser between Austin and Paul landing on the PS. Gaffney and Kelly will battle for the 5th spot. If they keep seven Stokley and Stallworth will have a shot.

So the WR corps. will look like this:

If they keep 6

They'll keep six maximum, possibly only 5. Also, with regards to Banks, the kickoffs have been moved 5 yards, so the return game is not going to be as critical. This limits Banks value because he doesn't figure to play much as WR. As an aside, Josh Wilson has been a returner in the past.

I see the following WR's on the final roster:

Moss
Gaffney
Stallworth
AAA
Hankerson
N. Paul

Practice Squad
A. Robinson

OK 1Nik, this time around, I am going to have to side with you about leaving Banks off. My reasons are below.

With the addition of Stallworth and Gaffney, draftees Hankerson, Paul and Robinson, the re-signing of Moss and the emergence of Armstrong last year, Banks will be hard pressed to remain on this team even before the pre-season games are played. Then there is Austin and a possibly improved Kelly to look at in camp.

I think that Mike is shopping Banks right now to get the best value. I don't see Mike outright releasing Brandon until he has to, so I expect to see Banks traded between now and the end of training camp even if he out returns the other guys in other words he will be showcased.

I come to this conclusion because:

1.AA - Starter
2.Moss - Starter
3. Hankerson - Will start later in the season - Doubt he will learn the O and route running for opening day start.
4. Gaffney - Not a lock - must impress - height helps
4. Stalworth - Will push Gaffney and may make Gaffney expendable
(Either Gaffney or Stalworth will start opening day - one might not make the team)
5. Paul - An all around special teams guy and KOR guy
6. Aldrick Robinson - I think that he is the X factor Punt Returner - hasn't returned punts but received high grades in open field running

Kelly - I don't think he has enough to make the squad even when healthy.
Austin - My big question mark. I suspect that he has been working hard this offseason. He is a candidate to showcase in preseason to trade for a draft pick.
