It's clear that both have screwed the pooch in destroying this relationship. If La Var really wanted to finish his career here, he would have done some things differently. Likewise, if the Redskins organization really wanted to salvage their relationship with him, they too would have done some things differently. Bottom line, the relationship is over after this season.
I think LaVar's situation is a result of one of the last mistake mega-contracts that the Skins used to award. (Wait on the Chris Samuels thing. See * below). Gibbs & Co is slowly rectifying the salary cap of the Skins, replacing overpaid players with lavish contracts, with people who are willing to play for a good deal but not an insane one (see Coles and Moss). We've been willing to eat a huge dead cap number to get rid of players like Coles.
LaVar's contract is crazy; linebackers just don't get paid that much in the NFL. Under Gibbs, no way he would have gotten anywhere close to that contract. Really, the most he will pay another linebacker is probably what Marcus Washington got. And I personally think Washington is a better player than LaVar, and much more cost-effective.
*Now Samuels is another of these mega-contract mistakes. But unlike Lavar, Samuels shuts the hell up, plays hard, and has bought into the Redskins way. Maybe he didn't deserve to go to the ProBowl this year (I don't think he did personally; I think there were Skins much more deserving than him, including Jansen and Thomas on the line), but he's bought into being a Redskin. Gibbs is willing to tolerate his crazy contract because Chris is a professional. And unlike linebacker, left tackle is a position of need across the NFL, and good LTs get paid very well. His contract isn't a crazy one, it's less than what the top LT's in the game make.
Lavar's behavior shows he's not a professional. He can't just shut the hell up and do his job, happy with his situation or not. This kind of behavior just isn't tolerated here anymore.
Much as I loved having LaVar on our team, I'm glad to see that we've drawn the line somewhere. I'd be glad to see him back as a Skin, but I wouldn't be devastated to see him leave, either.
Bottom line, I trust Gibbs. He knows what he's doing. I made my mistake not trusting him with Brunell.
