Put me in, coach: Santana Moss, who returned two punts for 24 yards, said he’s been bugging the coaching staff about playing on special teams all offseason.

“Since I lost all that weight,” Moss said, referring to the 15 pounds he shed in the offseason, “I feel like I can run again. I have been messing around saying if Banks even stumps his toe, you can count on me.”

Banks, who returned one punt for four yards and two kickoffs for a combined 42 yards, is now facing competition from Moss and rookie corner back Richard Crawford at punt returner.

We saw more of the speed game. It wasn’t just the sprint on third and five, though that was nice. Eventually I would imagine defensive ends will alter their rush; on that play the end went way upfield, leaving an easy gap for Griffin. The last thing a defensive coordinator will want is Griffin breaking contain. On this run, Griffin picked up five yards and a first down. We saw him slide out of the pocket to the right, keep his eyes downfield, and hit Josh Morgan for 11 yards and a first down. Again, footwork.

John Keim's 10 Observations

Tough to know what to make of the receiver battle. But what I do know is that Dezmon Briscoe’s size helps. Rex Grossman (who played well, but he’s a veteran passer facing backups) hooked up with him for two passes, a total of 49 yards (one for 37 yards). He may have pushed off; maybe he didn’t. But with a guy that big you can throw it up to him. “He’s an agile tall guy, but he runs good routes and he’s got a good feel for the game. Obviously he’s long, has long arms and just makes plays,” Grossman said. Can the Redskins afford to keep a receiver who doesn’t play special teams? He’ll certainly have to learn. Mike Shanahan does a good job of giving receivers long looks in a game (it’s why some wideouts don’t play in some games). It gives them a chance to make plays. Anthony Armstrong had one catch over the middle (but he bobbled it; have seen that a bit too much). The other pass thrown to him looked a little late. Right now, Briscoe is a better receiver, but Armstrong’s value as a gunner can’t be underestimated.

Leonard Hankerson hasn’t had a big problem with his hands since training camp opened. At least not like last year. And the problem isn’t his hands anyway. It’s his eyes. Whenever Hankerson drops a pass, replay it and see where his eyes are. Good chance they’re turning upfield and that’s what happened again today when he dropped a ball. I know the coaches love his ability, but he hasn’t exactly jumped out this summer. On the deep ball he missed I happened to watch him as he ran downfield and it almost seemed like he slowed up midway down and sped back up when he realized the ball was being thrown his way. Josh Morgan has looked better at the Z position.

Freeney played every snap of the first half. He wasn't much of a factor. Didn't here from Mathis either. That says a lot for our tackles.

While I typically don’t expect 32-year-old players in the front seven to play every down for a half in a pre-season game, that is what we saw from Freeney in this one.During the game he played on both the left and right side, and at times put his hand on the ground, although for the most part he played standing up. When it came to pass rushing, it didn’t look like he had lost a step compared to last year. On a few plays he had a nice bull rush trying to run the tackle into RGIII and making him scramble around the pocket.

This explains one reason we didn't hear from Mathis. He didn't play. I like the way Matthews described the ZBS scheme of the Skins.

There were a few reasons for a leaky run defense, not that that will play well in the defensive meeting room this week. Right end Cory Redding missed the game with a knee injury. Outside linebacker Robert Mathis was held out of the game as a precaution with a shoulder issue.

Ricardo Mathews, who replaced Redding in the starting lineup, explained the Redskins brought a different approach than did the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Pittsburgh was a power team,’’ he said. “This week we played more of a zone (blocking) team. They all swing, all running side-to-side.

Morris looks great, but I still prefer Royster and Helu, although Helu's health worries me.

Why? Not that you're wrong but I'd like to know what it is that you prefer.

Yeah, I love Helu's movement, he's so elusive. Royster always seems to get about 2 or 3 yards more than he's meant to, great desire and drive.

Morris is good and strong, but my impression, and I may well be wrong on this, is that his skill set isn't as strong as Helu or Royster, they seem to have more lateral speed and ability with the ball in their hands.

But that's just my opinion. I say we need to keep all four for the season.

Hey SLR, just want give you a perspective on this topic from being at the game.

On Royster, probably no one on the roster better than him in making the right read to the whole and making one cut. Also has wiggle in his step and makes people miss. You have a point liking Royster.

Helu is learning to read the holes, but he has the speed. He makes one cut and he is up the field. You have a point in liking Helu.

Hightower has quick feet, but if you notice his feet in the game, he has yet to master the one cut. He sometimes tries more than one cut to find his wholes. I can see why you didn't mention him, but his uick feet make his a good back as well.

That brings us to Morris. One cut and up the field with power. Doesn't read the holes as well as Royster, but I would say better than Helu. I think that he has good vision and feel which he demonstrated tonight on that backside against the grain cut for over 20 yards.

I am with you - keep all four as they all bring something different to the table.

I left Hightower out of it because I'm a big fan of his and I'm a bit surprised at all the negative things people say about him on here when I've brought him up before.

For me he is excellent in pass protection, good receiver from the backfield and a good cut runner, although I concede he's not as good as Helu at that.

But what I love about Hightower most of all, and why I was so happy we signed him, is that he's essentially the antithesis of Haynesworth.

He's honest, if you know what I mean. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he encourages those around him, he's a sportsman. He loves to play and would probably be here playing even if players didn't earn money in the NFL.

You might not have seen as you were at the game but before the game yesterday it was him in the middle doing the pep talk for the offense. I was so happy to see him back and I hope he stays injury free for the season as I believe he will share many good habits with Helu, Royster and Morris.

Is his son deaf? I know one of his twin boys died right after birth, but not sure about the other. Many hard times that guy has been through.
