I love hearing this...
Shanahan, though, said his year away from coaching gave him a feel for potential candidates throughout the league.
"I'm aware of everybody, every coach," Shanahan said Wednesday. "It's what I do. I study coaches. I study coordinators. I know what they've done. I know where they've been."
I love the fact that he spent the year off studying other teams to make himself even better.
Looks like Bugel is retiring.

yeah. I just hope we don't have a lot of guys in there with big names Chad Dukes was saying today that the coaching staff may be DS's way of getting out of the free agent game and getting coaches.
I want some guys who are qualified but those that are not going to be a threat to go anywhere anytime soon.

Think about that for a second, Frank. Any truly good position or assistant coach is going to get recruited for a better job. An assistant who isn't likely to be recruited... well...
If you want good coaches, you also have to expect some turnover. Any team that wins the Superbowl... or even goes deep into the playoffs... can expect it's coaching staff to get raided. Just how it is. If you want a coaching staff that's not going to get raided, you can anticipate a future of mediocre seasons.

Is it just me? Because every time I see Jim Haslett's name, I pronounce it like Spurrier did. Jim HAYS-lett. The Ol' Ball Coach has damaged me in so many ways.

I'd like to see us get Zimmerman... I dont mind bringing in quality guys, have them here for 2 years or so and get a culture going. That way we can promote from within and keep the culture going with those who matured in it...

We first mentioned Wednesday that Jim Haslett could be a name to watch as a potential defensive coordinator in Washington.
NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora reports the Redskins indeed plan to meet with the former Saints and UFL head coach. The Redskins are also interested in Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
Haslett reportedly wants to bring in former chiefs defensive line coach Tim Krumrie if he is running a defense. Players working under a Haslett/Krumrie combination should expect a lot of yelling coming their way.
Don't see a point in starting another thread b/c of one name out there and since this is about his potential staff, it applies.
I think that if we did hire Haslett and Krumrie, we would be more disciplined for sure but I can't say that some of the current players would be happy and also be tough. I could see Hall and Haynesworth rebelling against them.
I'm told that Zimmer is a player's coach so that may be a better way to go but I do like the idea of discipline which is what this team needs - just not going crazy.
I mentioned Haslett last week in the "most likely changes" thread. Krumrie is an interesting choice. Can't wait to see how Albert handles being yelled at by an old school coach.
Also there is a possibility Shannahan keeps either Sherman Smith or Stump Mitchell as RB coach.
Jerry Gray is a candidate for the DC.
The funny thing about Haslett, I think, is that his best success as a DC was with the Steelers, under Cowher, running the 3-4. Since then, if I'm not mistaken, he has run the 4-3 every where he's been (Saints and Rams) and been less successful. I realize the Saints and Rams did not have the Steelers talent, but why not try the 3-4 again?
Steve Watson, former WR, former Assoc. HC under Shanny is rumored to be a candidate for WR coach.
Broncos have denied Shanahan permission to talk to Bobby Turner (RB's) and Rick Dennison (OL) for Washington coaching positions.

The Broncos have told Shanahan he now has permission to talk to Bobby Turner and Turner will become a Associate Head Coach.
Jim Haslett appears to be the front runner for defensive coordinator and Gray is a distant 2nd

thanks 1niksder - do you really think that Gray is getting more than a little consideration here? I can understand that he should be in the mix but I guess I did not realize that he was held in such high regard - hey! I am not saying the man cannot coach by any means but I just did not know that he might be considered for DC here

He has done the job in the past and was too bad at it. two of the four years he ran the Bills D, they were ranked #2 in the league.

I'm not sure what to think on this one, wasn't this guys teams all mediocre on defense? I can't see this being an upgrade right away, but then again if our defensive talent is utilized properly maybe it would be.

Zimmer's extension is not official per 106.7 as of 3:32pm. So who knows. He could be using the skins as leverage or using the bengals as leverage against us.

I think if we hire Haslett, it would be in our interest to keep Jerry Gray.
Its pretty stupid of Zimmer not to at least give our team a fair hearing.

The Bengals officially announced the deal and released a statement in which Zimmer said: “I love working with Marvin (Lewis). He’s a great coach who does a terrific job, and he has been like family to me through all the ordeal our family has gone through (Zimmer’s wife, Vikki, died on Oct. 8 ). And I really respect the group of players we have. They have worked exceptionally hard, and I know they join me in knowing we have to keep improving as we move forward.”

Jerry Gray, the Redskins’ secondary coach and someone who interviewed for the head-coaching job earlier this season, is formally interviewing for the defensive coordinator position Tuesday, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Former Saints coach Jim Haslett interviewed for the job Monday, according to sources, and another top candidate, Mike Zimmer, re-signed with the Bengals earlier Tuesday.
New Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is putting together a staff that will include his son, Kyle, as offensive coordinator. Bob Slowik, Shanahan’s former defensive coordinator in Denver, almost is certain to join the staff in some capacity. Gray also could remain in his current position should he not be promoted to defensive coordinator.
The Redskins’ current defensive coordinator Greg Blache is expected to retire.
Steve Jackson, the Redskins’ safeties coach, also is scheduled to interview with team officials Tuesday for a position coaching defensive backs.
The Redskins are scheduled to meet with Bobby April about coaching special teams, according to sources. April recently left the Bills.
Shanahan also is expected to hire Richard Mann to coach wide receivers and Bobby Turner to coach running backs.

Pat Kirwan reported on Sirius Radio that Turner was almost certainly going to join the Redskins and will get one of those titles that enables the move but he will be basically the RB coach

thanks 1niksder - you know, I have always felt that Kirwan had a decent amount of knowledge about what was happening but not great - now I know where/who he goes to for what he needs on the Redskins

I'm not sure that I agree - I understand that the Saints have done well but I think that is more because of their offense - their defense was ranked below the Redskins in
every defensive stat - they were #25 overall; #21 against the rush and #26 against the pass = not good
now I'm not a big stats fan but if Campbell and our offense had some success against that D can you imagine what might be in store for an offense that racked up some incredible numbers against the #2 defense in the NFL and the #1 defensive player in the NFL who happens to be a CB
I think that the Saints will win this game but it will not be due to anything by Gregg Williams group
as far as Jerry Gray is concerned I have heard from others here recently that Jerry Gray might not be as bad as we thought - I am concerned about the way our secondary played this past year but I don't know how much of that was Greg Blache
