The center of it all – For a future Hall of Famer, Sergei Fedorov’s impact with the Capitals is felt subtly, with the sly touch of his passes from the right wing corner on the power play. As Washington has won four out of five games in the last 10 days, Fedorov has been at the center of the team’s success. Initially he was centering Eric Fehr and Tomas Fleischmann and assisting with their emergence as NHL scoring threats. Sunday he skated with Alexander Semin and Brooks Laich and contributed a goal and an assist, giving Fedorov five points and a +7 rating in the last six games. His eight points in February match the most he has had in any month this season.
Note of the Night
Something special – Washington has scored on 13-of-36 power-play opportunities in the last 11 games (36.1%), including a 2-for-3 effort Sunday against Pittsburgh . The Capitals' opponents in that time have received 23 more power-play opportunities but have scored four fewer goals (9-for-59, 84.7% penalty killing). In the third period of those 11 games, the Capitals have had just four power plays; their opponents have had 26.
Washington's 24.1% success rate on the power play ranks third in the league (first in the Eastern Conference) and would establish a new club record if the Capitals could maintain it for the rest of the season (record is 23.9%, 1984-85).

Divide and conquer – The Capitals are 12-1-3 against Atlantic Division teams with four Atlantic games left on the schedule. After tonight, Washington will play 13 of its remaining 21 games against Southeast Division foes.
First things first – The Capitals have scored in the first period of 12 consecutive games, their longest such streak since at least before the lockout. Washington 's 65 first-period goals rank second in the NHL, trailing only San Jose . The Capitals are 24-2-3 when leading after the first period, 26-5-2 when scoring first, 37-5-4 in games that they led at any time and 24-10-1 when outshooting an opponent.
Home run – The Capitals are in the midst of a season-long five-game homestand and a stretch playing nine of 10 at Verizon Center . Washington is 24-5-1 at home this season, second only to San Jose for the best home record in the NHL and already one better than last year's win total. Washington is just six home wins shy of the club record (30, 1985-86). The Capitals have won 13 straight at home against Eastern Conference opponents and are 45-13-4 at home under head coach Bruce Boudreau.
Young guns firing –he Capitals and Detroit are the only teams in the NHL with four 50-point scorers: Alex Ovechkin (77 points), Nicklas Backstrom (64), Alexander Semin (53) and Mike Green (52). Washington's top four scorers are all averaging more than a point per game; no other team has more than its top two scorers above a point per game.
All good –Washington has laid claim to the best record through 60 games in franchise history (38-17-5). The Capitals already became the first team in franchise history to go over .500 in each of the first four months of the season and enjoyed the best first half in franchise history (.695). They are the fastest team to 30 wins in franchise history (47th game).

Yeah, they seemed to have forgotten they had 20 more minutes to play last night.

They keep going and going – The physical demands placed on a hockey player are as strenuous as any athlete will face in any sport. For more than six months and 82 regular season games, players hit, are hit, slam into boards, block pucks with every body part and occasionally engage in scraps that can evolve into pugilistic competitions. Injuries are common and playing all 82 games is rare. The Capitals had four players suit up for every regular season games last year. This year, only Brooks Laich and Nicklas Backstrom have played in all 61 games so far. Backstrom, in his second year, has never missed a game in his career, as he has played in all 143 regular-season games. Laich has played in 164 straight games (played every game since Feb. 21, 2007 against San Jose ) and is the Caps current top iron man.

How important is a power-play goal? – Much has been talked about the Capitals power play this season. The Caps are 29-11-2 when they score a power-play goal versus 9-7-3 when they go without a power-play goal. Washington has scored a power-play goal in nine out of its last 11 games. The Capitals rank third in the NHL with 60 power-play goals ( Detroit , 76, and San Jose , 64; both teams are on top of their respective divisions). Washington is 23.8% on the power play, which ranks third in the league (first in the Eastern Conference) and is just shy of the club record for a full season (23.9%, 1984-85). The power play will be an important tool for the Capitals down the stretch.
Note of the Night
First things first – The Capitals have scored in the first period of 13 consecutive games, their longest such streak since at least before the lockout. Washington 's 66 first-period goals are tied for the league lead with San Jose . The Capitals are 24-3-3 when leading after the first period, 26-6-2 when scoring first, 37-6-4 in games that they led at any time and 24-10-1 when outshooting an opponent. Nicklas Backstrom leads the Capitals in first-period scoring (8g-18a), while Alex Ovechkin leads the team in first-period goals (11).
Five More Notes No Media Person Should be Without
Southeast significance – Washington will play 13 of its remaining 21 games against Southeast Division foes, including four games against Atlanta . The Capitals have played just 11 games against Southeast opponents (8-3-0), including four straight wins. Every other team in the league has played at least 13 games in their own division.
Goal getter – Alex Ovechkin, who already led the NHL in goals in November (11) and December (12), currently leads the league with 11 February goals. Atlanta 's Ilya Kovalchuk ranks second this month with 10 goals. With two games left in the month and seven goals in his last six games, Ovechkin is three goals shy of the best goal-scoring month of his career (14 in March 2008).
Back it up – Nicklas Backstrom has assembled a seven-game point scoring streak that is the longest current streak in the league and two games shy of his career-best run, a nine-game stretch in November of this season. Backstrom has three goals and seven assists during this run, with goals in three of the last four games. His 16 goals have surpassed his total from all of last year (14) and his point total ranks 10th in the league, just four shy of last year's total.
Something special – Washington has scored on 14-of-43 power-play opportunities in the last 12 games (32.6%). The Capitals' opponents in that time have received 24 more power-play opportunities but have scored four fewer goals (10-for-67, 85.1% penalty killing). In the third period of those 12 games, the Capitals have had just six power plays; their opponents have had 28. Washington 's 23.8% success rate on the power play ranks third in the league (first in the Eastern Conference) and is just shy of the club record for a full season (23.9%, 1984-85).
Young guns firing – The Capitals and Detroit are the only teams in the NHL with four 50-point scorers: Alex Ovechkin (79 points), Nicklas Backstrom (65), Alexander Semin (53) and Mike Green (52). Southeast Star – Alexander Semin has played well in the month of February, recording 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 11 games. That tally puts him just two points shy of his season-high monthly total of 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in the month of October. In last night’s contest Semin recorded three points, and now has 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 18 career games against Atlanta . His strong play against the division should benefit the Capitals as the season comes to an end; the team will face a Southeast Division opponent in 12 of its remaining 20 games (including three more games against Atlanta ). In 82 career games against foes from the division Semin has 86 points (45 goals, 41 assists), compared to his 107 points (52 goals, 55 assists) in 153 games against the rest of the league.

I took my best friend Dave to his first and he immediately wanted to buy Season Tickets!
The nice thing about Caps season Tickets is that you can buy packages without having to buy the whole year.
If you can get into the lower section, you really get the full expirience. You get to "feel the crowd" whenever they score, or miss, or like last night when the crowd chant was "REF YOU SUCK!"
Most people start out hating it on TV and learn to love it after they've seen it live, so you I can only imagine your reaction if you already like it on TV!
I'm excited for you, man. Hope you get to one!

Quietly plugging along – The Capitals are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and center Nicklas Backstrom has been a factor in each game. The second-year pivot is in the midst of a career-high 10-game point streak (4g-9a). Backstrom’s streak is the longest current point streak in the league and ties Alex Ovechkin for the longest point streak on the team this season. His 17 goals have surpassed his total from last year (14) and his 68 points rank him 11th in the NHL. Backstrom, who has never missed a game in his NHL career, had 69 points last season.
Note of the Day
Nick of time – Nicklas Backstrom has assembled a 10-game point scoring streak that is the longest current streak in the league and the longest of his career. He has matched the longest streak by a Capital this season (previously by Alex Ovechkin, twice). Backstrom has four goals and nine assists during this run, with goals in four of the last seven games. His 17 goals have surpassed his total from all of last year (14) and his point total ranks 11th in the league, just one shy of last year's total.
Five More Notes No Media Person Should be Without
Powerful starts – Washington has scored in the first period of 16 straight games (the club record is 18 straight, set in 1988-89), and much of that early offense has come courtesy of the power play. The Capitals are 14-for-27 (52%) on the power play in the first period of their last 15 games. Washington 's first goal of the game has come on the power play in each of the last five contests.
More first – Washington 's 70 first-period goals lead the NHL (four more than Chicago , Detroit and San Jose ). The Capitals are 25-3-3 when leading after the first period, 28-7-2 when scoring first, 39-7-4 in games that they led at any time and 25-11-1 when outshooting an opponent. Nicklas Backstrom (9g-18a) leads the team in first-period scoring; he and Alexander Semin have scored the Capitals' first goal a team-high nine times.
More power – Washington has scored on 20-of-58 power-play opportunities in the last 15 games (34.5%). The Capitals' opponents in that time have received 24 more power-play opportunities but have scored five fewer goals (15-for-82, 81.7% penalty killing). Washington's 24.7% success rate on the power play ranks second in the league (first in the Eastern Conference) and would set the club record for a full season (23.9%, 1984-85).
Southeast Sasha – Alexander Semin, who has goals in three straight games and four multiple-point games in his last nine outings (5g-8a in that time), has feasted on Southeast Division teams in his career. Semin has 87 points (45g-41a) in 83 career games against the Southeast (1.05 points per game), compared to 109 points (53g-56a) in 154 games against the rest of the NHL (.71 points per game). Semin already has two two-goal games against Carolina this year and his 17 career goals against the Hurricanes are more than he has against any other team. Eleven of the Capitals' remaining 18 games are against Southeast opponents.
On the verge – With their next points, Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich will match their season point totals from last season. Alexander Semin's next goal will be the 100th of his NHL career.

Deadline Day – For hockey fans, today is filled with drama and hope. The NHL trade deadline expires at 3 p.m. today and up until that moment there should be plenty of teams buying to make their club better for the stretch run and plenty of teams selling as they look toward the future. The Caps were sellers two years ago before turning into buyers last year when they made three trade-day acquisitions. Washington has an 11-point lead in the Southeast Division, but general manager George McPhee has always said that if there is a move that makes sense and will improve the team then he will do it.

I've been in Japan for the last week, whats up with the Caps in the last two games? I watched the Flyers game before I left and we were in the box way to often. Seems like the losses to the Hurricanes, and the Panthers were the same way. Did we make any moves?
Bruce has the authority. When Bruce makes the decision, it's a Redskins decision.

No moves. Well, no trades anyway. The Caps sent Kromwall down to Hershey, and in more encouraging news also sent Brian Pothier to Hershey.
Pothier's assignment is being called a "conditioning stint" which could be good news as he feels ready to skate again.
These past two games the Caps have been skating like they have cinderblocks tied to their skates.
I know Theodore had the flu on Tuesday so I'm wondering how much of the lockerroom is suffering through it.
Neuvirth showed he still has a long way to go as the 'Canes found his weak-spot just above his glove hand. That was a hard game to watch. The 'Canes first three goals were giveaways by the Caps.
The first was a penalty shot, the next two were shorties. It was ugly.

"This year I just didn't feel it," – These were the words from general manager George McPhee yesterday after the NHL trade deadline was over and Capital fans saw no change in their team. This was a change from last year that saw Sergei Fedorov, Cristobal Huet and Matt Cooke come to Washington at deadline time. But also unlike last year, this season’s Capitals have already proven to be among the league’s elite and are not in a battle for their playoff lives. The Capitals did get calls but McPhee said, "We would rather go with our own guys, and we wanted to make sure we had room for them.” So the Southeast Division leading Capitals will push into the playoffs with the team that currently has the fifth-best record in the NHL.
Note of the Day
Power of Alexander – Alexander Semin has goals in four straight games, one game shy of his best career goal-scoring streak, and has 11 points in the last six games (5g-6a). Four of those goals have come on the power play after he scored just one power-play goal in his first 40 games of the season. That follows a similar pattern to last season, when he scored eight of his 10 power-play goals after Feb. 15.
Five More Notes No Media Person Should be Without
Uncharacteristic GA – Washington has allowed 11 goals in the past two games after holding its previous eight opponents to 2.75 goals per game.
On the verge – With their next points, Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich will match their season point totals from last season. Mike Green has matched his point total from last season and will establish a new career high with his next point.
Gimme a chance – The Capitals have scored at least one power-play goal in each of the last 14 games when they have received more than two power-play opportunities (14 of 16 games and each of the last six overall). Washington has scored on 21-of-62 power-play opportunities in the last 16 games (33.9%), including 50% in the first period (14-of-28). The Capitals' opponents in that time have received 25 more power-play opportunities but have scored five fewer goals (16-for-87, 81.6% penalty killing). Washington's 24.7% success rate on the power play ranks second in the league (first in the Eastern Conference) and would set the club record for a full season (23.9%, 1984-85).
Ovi on a roll – With Nicklas Backstrom's 10-game point streak expiring Tuesday night, Alex Ovechkin now boasts the team's longest active point streak at six games (4g-4a). Ovechkin is nearing his third 50-goal season and has surpassed the 400-shot total for the third time in his career.

Nick of time – Nicklas Backstrom's 10-game point scoring streak that was snapped Tuesday night matched Alex Ovechkin (twice) for the longest Capitals point streak of the season. Backstrom is the first Capitals player other than Ovechkin to compiled a double-digit point streak since Robert Lang in 2003-04. Backstrom had four goals and nine assists during this run, with goals in four of the last eight games. His 17 goals have surpassed his total from all of last year (14) and his point total ranks tied for 11th in the league, just one shy of last year's total.

Bob, so I'm watching the game vs. Nashville last night (didn't watch the entire game) but tell me brutha, why in the heck did we lose BOTH fights?
Like, Beshear (sp) getting knocked out/down.. that was totally hilarious man. I was screaming at my tv like "get that sob, punch him, harder.. awwwwwww come on man, you suck!!!" .. what, like 2 seconds later?...Bradley gets into it and again i'm yelling.."come on, come on.. yes.. noooo.. ouch.. bam.. pop.. nooooooooooo, dude you suck too"... Granted Bradley didn't hit the ice but his face covered with blood like that was totally awesome. The bad part about it was that Bradley was the one and not Toodoo (sp). I didn't see the 3rd period or the OT but I heard we won, thank goodness man, Carolina is like what.. 9 points behind us and gaining? As usual though like any sport, a "W" is a "W".. GO CAPS!

Man, it was great to get out of that losing streak. The Caps played great defensively except at the beginning of the game. That seems to be when the defense just isnt awake yet. The Caps played better than 2 goals last night, but Nashville's goalie was in the zone for almost the entire game.
RIP SEAN TAYLOR #21

Yeah, it's a rare thing to see Brash get knocked out like that.
The fights really summed up what's been happening to the Caps lately. They are swinging a lot without much defense and it's killing them.
It's not like they haven't had some good chances, they just aren't scoring. I'm not too worried though.
Detroit had a late season slump last year too where they went 1-8-2 from Feb 7th through Feb 29th. Slumps just happen. Look at Boston, they are 3-6-1 in their last 10 (the Caps are 4-5-1) and slumping as well. Even San Jose is 5-4-1.
I think that because they are having trouble scoring, that net is looking smaller behind the goalies and they are trying too hard. They'll figure it out and get back on the scoring train soon enough...I hope!

Needing the extra time – Washington has played in the extra stanza in three of its last six games, winning one each in overtime and the shootout and losing one in the shootout. The Capitals are 6-3 in overtime and 3-3 in the shootout on the season, including a 7-3 record in their last 10 games that went to extra time. This is nothing new to Caps fans as the Capitals had 19 of their games in the 2007-08 season go into overtime or the shootout. Washington was 7-4 in overtime and 4-4 in the shootout last season. Alexander Semin leads the team this season with four overtime points (2g-2a), while Alex Ovechkin (1g-1a) and Mike Green (2a) are tied for second with two overtime points each.
Note of the Day
Red scare – Eight of Washington 's 10 goals in the last five games have been scored by Russians: four by Alexander Semin and two each by Sergei Fedorov and Alex Ovechkin. Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich are the non-Russian goal scorers for Washington in the month of March.
Five More Notes No Media Person Should be Without
D thing – Jose Theodore, who held Nashville scoreless for the final 61:30 of Tuesday's game, has a 1.95 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in the last three games.
8 for 8 – Alex Ovechkin has a point in each of his last eight games (five goals, five assists in that time). Ovechkin is nearing his third 50-goal season and a career-high in shots on goal. If Ovechkin hits 50 goals, he would become the first Capital to record three 50-goal seasons. Teemu Selanne is the only active NHL player with three 50-goal seasons (1992-93, '96-97, '97-98); Dany Heatley, Jarome Iginla, Ilya Kovalchuk, Jeremy Roenick, Joe Sakic, Brendan Shanahan and Keith Tkachuk each have two 50-goal seasons.

Mr. Clutch – Sergei Fedorov, who earlier this year became the all-time NHL leader in goals by a Russian, tied the league record with his 15th career overtime goal Tuesday night in Nashville . It was the 93rd game-winning goal of Fedorov's career. Fedorov has three goals and seven assists in his last 14 games.
Measuring stick – Thursday's game is one of only five of Washington 's remaining 14 games that are against teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. The Flyers, with 82 points, have the most points of the Capitals' remaining opponents.
Wouldn't you like to get away? – Washington boasts one of the league's best home records, but is just 7-8-1 in its last 16 home games. Conversely, the Capitals are in the middle of the pack on the road but they are 11-3-2 in their last 16 road games. The Caps have won a season-high four road games in a row and are 5-0-2 in their last seven road games, since a 3-2 Inauguration Day loss at Ottawa (Jan. 20). Washington plays nine of its remaining 14 games away from home.

Totally blown about that but I caught them on the highlights. I did see the shot Ovie had that hit off the dag gone pole though. Aaarrrrrggggh... hahaha.. we beat the flyers though, totally sweet. I can email my coworker up PA later and tell her "good game".. chuckle....
