As Skins fans we are accustom to other teams having successful franchise QBs and hopelessly pining for one. Now we have one of the brightest stars in the league and many fans are in a state of confused disbelief. I get it you didn't expect it to really finally happen and certainly not with Kirk the other one was cast to be the one and he broke your hearts so you don't want to hope again but it is time to believe your eyes and let go of your doubts and fears Kirk's the one. The best Skin in decades whether you comprehend it or not.
I am not going to go as far as you here, but I agree that I am at least confused by fans that don't want to resign him or those that say "well, we can't because we have to resign DJack and/or Garcon and DEF" --- which to me makes absolutely no sense. QB is priority #1 for EVERY FRANCHISE. We now have what looks like a franchise QB for the first time in 30 years.
I feel like the people that don't want to resign him for a $100M deal are similar to the types that self-sabotage romantic relationships. Why wouldn't you want to resign a QB that is 3rd in passing, 5th in QBR, 9th in TDs, 11th in INT %, 3rd in ypa, 3rd in 4Q comebacks & 4th in game winning drives? And why would you prefer to sign 2 31 year-old WRs instead of a franchise player at the most important position in the game? This is the kind of stuff that I shake my head upon reading.

Kirk has had all this success with an ensemble cast of receivers. As a unit they are good but aside from Reed none of them are stars. Jackson is a a great deep threat but is limited doing everything else and a liability when blocking. Crowder a very good slot receiver and Garcon is a nice possession receiver but neither is a number 1 receiver. Where is the big target for a fade in the red zone? Kirk doesn't have a tall receiver to work with, they attempted a fade to diminutive Jackson last week, absurd.
Kirk spreads the ball using the entire field and every receiver in the set so he's very tough to defend. I'd like them to resign Garçon and Jackson but I won't worry if they move on Kirk will get it to the open man whomever he is next season.

Speaking for myself, I hope Cousins is playing QB here next season - the only reason he may not be is because the FO does not want to pay him - that is not because he's not worth the money, it's simply a business decision
Cousins is still just the best QB we've had in a long time

Redskins single season pass leaders:
1. Cousins 4166 ('15)
2. Schroeder 4109 ('86)
3. Cousins 4045 ('16)*
4. Johnson 4005 ('99)
Dude is going to be one and two by next Tuesday! That's pretty awesome.
I appreciate OldSchool's enthusiasm about Cousins, but I think most fans agree "greatness" is only going to come from winning in the playoffs. He's off to an impressive start though.

I kind of feel like that ship has sailed. Even if the FO doesn't like the economics of a Cousins deal, can you imagine the fan reaction if they let him walk after these past two seasons?
Regardless of what McCloughan's perspective on QBs might be, I just can't imagine Snyder being willing to let that happen.

Kirk Cousins is on pace for 5,000 passing yards this season., That's only been done eight times in NFL history, by the likes of Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Drew Brees (4x), Tom Brady, and Matt Stafford.
He's getting paid whatever he wants. It's not even a discussion at this point.

Wow is that true? That's really impressive.
He'd have to pass for like 320 yards in each of the next three games. Guess its possible.

LOVE to see Cousins go over 5,000 yards passing this season - I also hope we run for over a 100 yards in each of the next 3 games
The Panthers are like 30th in the NFL against the pass - 270+ per game - let's torch them to start with
how great would it be to have a QB that gets $30M+ on our payroll

Cousins better hope we keep him here - otherwise his HUGE payday might mean he's playing for the Browns, Bears or 49ers

Just watching Kiper/McShay on ESPN a few minutes ago talking about the 2017 draft. Not looking like a great year for QBs coming out. The highest rated right now is the junior from UNC who has played all of 13 games and most people think should just stay in school. They were wondering if this might be the first year since 1996 where a QB doesn't go in the first round.
I'm sure those opinions will change a lot over the next few months, but that does improve Cousins' bargaining position.
Also read that the cap is expected to increase $10m next year. That's good news for the team if so!

with Cousins FMV likely to be in the mid 20s I think the Redskins will try for $22-$24M and if he doesn't go for it they will go for the exclusive franchise tag - we need a bunch of good players - I do NOT see the Redskins drafting QB in the top 3 rounds

He's starting to make a believer out of me. Get us to the playoffs this year I'm all in on paying him 20 to 24 mill a year. If we don't make playoffs 18 to 20 mill is fair. I actually think he can do it.
It really depends on the free agent market and what Kirk thinks he's worth?
Aaron Rogers signed his big contract with a SB Mvp on his resume.
Andrew Luck signed his record contract with an AFC title game appearance.
I do think Kirk is becoming elite. But it remains to be seen how good he is. Is Kirk top 3,4,5 or top 10?
Is this as good as Kirk gets or is he only getting better?

Cousins is looking at $27m/yr IMHO. Playoffs or not.

+1 - $25M-$30M - that's why I think he gets the tag = $24M or something that gives us a QB for 2-3 years so we can find another one
good QBs are V important and are going to get around $25M a year - the key is to both overpay the QB & at the same time structure the deal so that you can pay all the other guys too, unlike what happened in Baltimore
we are V fortunate to have the guys in charge that will figure out what's best for this franchise going forward

Kirk has been put in the "passer" category for sure. He is also on pace to be 19th in pass attempts in history of the NFL. 609 attempts. Those guys that you mention that have had the 600+ attempts in those SPECIFIC years never won a Super Bowl.
His yards per attempt is around 131 in league history. That is the more important stat, the yard per pass RATHER than yardage in my opinion. 131 is good considering how many qb's that have been in the league.
Again we are undefeated this year when he passes 35 times or less. Kirk is in the 20% win range when he passes more than 36. I'm not going to appreciate those high yardage marks until our WIN/LOSS record show good when he does.
Outside of that gotta pay him. He's showed he can light it up and also manage the game appropriately, not turn ball over with frequency and he continues to improve year to year
The big question is how much are we willing to pay him.

Maybe not the best Redskin in decades, but how about some love for Garcon? Tying an Art Monk record deserves some credit!
Garcon needs just one catch to tie Art Monk for the most consecutive 65-catch seasons in team history. Monk had four such seasons from 1988-91. Garcon also needs one catch to extend his streak of consecutive regular season games with a catch to 100. That’s the fifth-longest active streak in the NFL and the third-longest streak by a member of the Redskins since the league merger in 1970.

The best Redskin in decades wouldn't have looked lost, underthrowing receivers, staring down receivers, and would have been able to capitalize on a game that we were fortunate enough to be in.

totally agree that Garcon needs to get a lot of credit but this thread is about The Best Redskin In Decades
the guy is a good QB and he's the best we've had since 1999 but let's face it - he's just a good QB who is going to get a lot of money ONLY because he's possibly the best QB "available" and certainly not because he's an elite talent at QB

I'm sorry but Kirk is not worth 27 mill a year. Andrew Luck gets 24 mill, Brees 24 mill, Flacco 22, A. Rodgers 22, Russel Wilson 21 and Ben Rothlesberger 21 mill. All these qbs except Luck have SB titles. Still Luck has far less talent to work with.

the FMV (fair market value) of a 'good' QB like Cousins means that he's going to get a contract that is
way above what he's "worth"
we are V fortunate that we have Allen & McCloughan here - they will "overpay" Cousins but they will not let the Cousins deal impact the franchise financially like the Flacco deal did to the Ravens & like other player contracts have done to other franchises

It's like Kirk became gun shy after the pick. Might as well go down firing! Why pass it fifty times and not take your shots down field?
Gruden talks about trying to run the ball but gives up way to soon. There was a play I think it was 3rd and 1 near the goal line and we pass and missed it. I know I wasn't the only one who had an issue with the play call.
