He and Danny then proclaimed RGIII as a pocket passer, to which Shanahan disagreed. Kyle revamped the offense to suit what the owner and start QB wanted. Shanahan was correct in that it didn't work. Shanahan wanted to start Cousins; he was told by the owner and star QB no. Based on games played, our 2011 and 2012 drafts were the most successful in Danny tenure as owner (which isn't saying much). He was then fired.
You can hate him all you want, but you can't say he wasn't wrong. Shanahan is no Bill Walsh. That is a proven fact. Then again, none of Walsh's incredibly impressive disciples were. I don't think many think of Shanahan when they think of Walsh, though.
To interrupt the public flagellation of SJ a little, I'd thought I'd address this. Everything that comes out of Shanahan's mouth is tainted. It contains kernels of truth, yes, but they're interwoven with his desire to place blame everywhere but himself. RG3's knee was ruined in that 2012 playoff game. Shanahan has said it was all RG3s decision to play, when in fact, the role of a coach is to tell a player (obviously hurt) "GO SIT ON THE BENCH NOW." Instead, he didn't.
He didn't manage the RG3 relationship at all, or manage to develop him as a player. He came into the NFL with blinding speed, a big arm, and a total inability to play at a actual NFL quality quarterback level. Right now he has some speed, a bum wheel, a big arm, and a total inability to play actual NFL quality quarterback level. Three seasons later, he hasn't developed at all. Part of that is on RG3 of course, but it's also on his coaching. For example, it's just flat out irresponsible that RG3 (who needed to learn a lot) didn't have a QB coach until now.
Shanahan's only goal in saying what he's saying now is to absolve himself of any guilt with regard to his tenure as a Redskins coach. But for those of us who remember, he was an awful coach. He's a disingenious slime ball.
That's why I want to punch him.
