I may have a way different perception being in Arizona but didn't this only become a thing like in the last couple years or so?
Personally growing up in Scouts the subject did come up in the 90's when I was a kid. We had native americans in our troop who's fathers and grandfathers all had the same answer. They said then that it's just the english words for what they used in their own language to describe themselves, had no baggage or bad connotations at all, and they'd used it since even before white man ever set foot on this land.
I might again be not the best person to ask but it seems like people are trying to attach some kind of sinister or racist meaning to a word that never had any just because it "sounds racist" to them.
Also, here in Arizona we have many schools on reservations that use the Redskins as their team names for the school sports teams. Glad I could add something with the videos and GIF animation.

Seriously, Dan. STOP.
http://deadspin.com/disgraced-soon-to-b ... 1645509844As part of his campaign to convince you that his team's name isn't racist, Dan Snyder took in today's game with Ben Shelly, president of the Navajo Nation. Once again, Dan probably should have done a little more research.
Shelly is technically still president, but not for much longer. He got absolutely trounced in August's primary election, finishing seventh.
Shelly's a lame duck, and he'll be out of office on Jan. 14 when the new president is sworn in.
So how did voters tire of Shelly after just one term?
- Shelly entered office under a dark cloud, being charged with fraud, conspiracy and theft in connection with allegations that he had dipped into slush funds to benefit himself and family members. The charges against Shelly were dropped in exchange for him agreeing to pay back $8,250 he was accused of stealing from the tribal government.
- Shelly's public support of Snyder has clashed with his own tribal council, which voted 9-2 in April to formally oppose the nickname "Redskins."
- Shelly was accused of going behind the back of tribal leaders when he partnered with Dan Snyder's Original Americans Foundation (OAF) to host a golf tournament. When sponsors the National Indian Gaming Association and the Notah Begay III Foundation learned of the involvement of Snyder's foundation, they withdrew their support.
Said one Navajo/Yankton Sioux activist:
"I think it is unfortunate the Navajo Nation administration of Ben Shelly is so out of step with the Navajo people, particularly, the young people, regarding this issue...I am also alarmed at the underhanded way this event was handled. The other funders were unaware of the Washington Redskins OAF involvement until the day before and Ben Shelly has repeatedly refused to comment on his meeting with Snyder."
I'm telling you its clownish stuff like this that makes a joke of our team (as if the on field product wasn't doing that already). You might want to reserve your applause the next time Snyder trots out one of his Indian Friends.

Just because Shelly has integrity issues, doesn't mean that a majority of Navajos, or Indians in general, oppose the nickname. Case in point, the Red Mesa High School on the Navajo reservation uses the Redskins nickname and logo for their sports teams.

Who said it did?
I'm not arguing for or against the name, man. And I honestly don't know or care what the majority of Navajos think. I'm saying Snyder constantly looks like a buffoon with these ham handed PR stunts. He's not doing us any favors.

And I don't think there are many who would argue that point, except maybe The Danny himself.
