Great game, aside from the missed field goals and the red zone stalling.

Was impressed with the first drive against the Steelers #1 defense (minus Polamalu)

#1 defense never allowed a 3rd down conversion

Running game was looking real good, the line was playing much better than usual

Overall a solid performance for a 1st preseason game

I actually think the Redskins are in a position to benefit from this, assuming Banks makes the team.

1: Gano will consistently put the ball through the end zone.
2: Banks will be impacted less than most returners. Unless the opponent has a strong kicker, he will be bringing the ball out (as we saw tonight on his one opportunity)... a lot... and getting good yardage on most returns.

Let's not forget:

Sexy Rexy has always been hit or miss. Some days with Chicago he looked like a league MVP, some days he looked like a 7th round draft pick from Northwest Directional Tech. Also, he was playing against the Steelers 2nd team defense.

Not really anything to read into his stats, just a chance for the team to work out some bugs from practice.

If he was good enough for the Bears then he is good enough for us. All he has to do is manage the game. He is not Joe Montana. He is what he is and I think he is better than the young Rex most of us are thinking of.

I think Cofield is a difference maker on D for us..

Man... dude is a straight up monster.. guess I never really took notice like that alot when he was with NY cuz I was used to seeing Rabach get blown back off the line by every team.

Well, if Beck is better, then he starts of course, and Grossman will have proved he is a more than capable back up.

If he's not, then Grossman gets the nod and like most teams we pray our starter stays healthy.

2nd Team Defense? Who else was missing beside Troy and Harrison? Does this mean we take away from Ben's performance because Landry and Atogwe didn't play for our first team.

Pre-season is pre-season, but a player better shine when he gets the opportunity and Grossman shined tonight.

Your warning is well taken that we shouldn't say he's the real deal and we don't have to look to the Bears to see hot and cold in Grossman. We saw that in two halves in Dallas. We saw it in Jax and we saw it at home against the Giants.

Enjoyed the atmosphere at FedEx Field tonight.
I saw TEAM ball being played by the Redskins tonight.
I saw guys playing together as one and the best is yet to come. These guys are just starting out. They have only been together a week. They will get better with each game.

These are aren't the guys that Shanny had to constantly fine last year. These guys are committed to winning and improving so they do their part.

I have been saying all off season - this will be a much improved team over last year and I am not saying this because of a preseason win. I say it because of what I wrote above. We have a TEAM. Do I make like Rex and say we win the East? I am not going to go there, but I say at least 9 wins this year and I said that before this game.

Isn't it telling that Rabach couldn't even pass a physical with the Ravens. Last year when he went out, Montgomery played better. Next week Rabach rushed himself back out there and the line play sucked once again. The guy was all about saving his position. Glad he's gone.

Sorry to see Casey go, it was time. I've always liked Mike Sellers and hate to see him go, but that kid Young looked good. Sellers has a chance TE, kinda tough, with all these young guys competing. These young guys are just hungry, they want to make the team and win games. This is the first year I can remember where there wasn't any drama in training camp. Hopefully second preseason goes as good as this one!

Hey, does anybody DVR's the preseason games and rewatches them? Thats what I'm getting ready to do.

Don't know how you can say this when we all saw how the line played with him in there last year. Look at that game where he went out. The line play was dramatically better. He comes back the next week and continues to get blown off the ball. Face it, the guy needed to be replaced two years ago. Ungrateful? It's about results. Clinton Portis is a better blocker than Casey Rabach.

Rabach gave us years of performance. Yeah, it was time. But trashing a guy who worked so hard for us for so long and criticizing him for what every teams wants to have, guys who lay it all on the line for the team, is just a pathetic argument.

We look much improved. The biggest standout is depth. Our backups outplayed theirs, and that's saying something. Maybe our starters aren't comprable to the starters on other great teams, but for once, we have some quality guys on the bench. HTTR

Takeaways:

Brandon Banks has to be on this team.
Hankerson needs to shake this tendency to lose focus and catch the ball. No 50/50

Jarvis Jenkins, welcome to the NFL. Leverage was off at times--getting manhandled, but showed good penetration.

Kerrigan is a BEAST. He can play LB and was a presence in the backfield when rushing. WIN

Josh Wilson looked very solid.

Anderson Russell is > than Chris Horton.

The O-Line looked above average. They still need time to gel. Montgomery is an upgrade over Rabach, but could stand to be a bit more consistent.

Rex Grossman is one chubby but capable QB.

Especially considering the reason he didn't pass his physical was because of injury. Not very tasteful.

Yeah, I'm not sure how a Redskins fan could badmouth Rabach after all he did for the team. He was an above average performer for years and he was a main cog in the line. He was the quarterback of the line and an unquestioned team leader. Considering he gave his best years to the Redskins and paid the price with his body it seems pretty ignorant to try and tear him down now.

Not bashing his character or being a team leader but he reminds me of Jon Jansen. When his play regressed he became a liability to the team . Should have been benched long before it happened. Casey play has looked like Sh$% for two years. Everyone seen it....sorry if it hurts your feelings. You play your best players in the Nfl that's how you become better.

While it's true that you must play the best... it is NEVER necessary to disrespect the man, nor his contributions.

After seeing Banks last night, we need to keep him. He proved that with the new rules he is a game changer.

Agree with you on Kerrigan, Jenkins and Anderson. I think Horton should be on of the first cuts.

I guess he found one thing he wanted to emulate about McNabb. Something we might one to take into account with Grossman is he is in his third year of this offense. It is a very precise offense according to Grossman and Donovan (called it robotic). Taking some of the decision making out of Rex's hands is a good thing.

Before we get too high, and not to be a buzzkill, there were still some problems with the defense. Not as bad as last year, but there were still several occasions where defenders were finding themselves trapped out of position against the run leading to big gains, and if I recall at least three times where if the Steelers had connected on the deep pass it would have been a touchdown.

I know our starting safeties were out, but it seemed like Hall and Wilson were getting burned on the outside. Hope they fix that.

Roethlisburger and Leftwich aren't usually deep threats, but Vick would've eaten us alive on this plays; let's not forget we have to face Brady this season.

It was a good game, and the Skins played well, but it just as easily could've been 28-22 (if we had made those missed FGs) as it was 16-7.

Hardly surprising in the 1st preseason game with several new starters after a shortened preseason.
The only real negative I saw was our inability to finish drives.

The team has been together since August 4th - Only a week. With several new starters new to the team including a rookie learning a new position, It is understood that there will be weaknesses with the defense.

Hall can play better, but he is always good to give up a few big plays during the season. He is not a shut down corner. Wilson, a PG County native, was playing in the same stadium in which he sold cokes and rooted for the home team as a kid. He probably had a few jitters.

Playing division foes in preseason isn't ever going to happen. No chance of seeing Vick yesterday. We face Brady later on, but this won't be the defense that Brady see in November, they will be better and more importantly, they will have a specific game plan for the patriots unlike yesterday.

Does the score really matter to you? It doesn't to me. I didn't read any post where someone was bragging about beating the Steelers and celbrating the margin of victory. What I read was people being excited about seeing good things that they didn't see last year or years back, preseason or regular season.
