Losing to the Rams at home has to be the worst case scenario. A contender would have beaten St. Louis by 30, and we just couldn't get it done.

After earning some respect by beating the Cowboys and Eagles we lost to the worst team in the league. We went from potentially being the best team in the NFC to being a laughingstock.

Congrats on getting the guys ready to play Zorn, also, you are an expert at halftime adjustments.

OMG, you are going to get severely flamed by the blindly optumistic. Haven't you learned you can't criticize the Skins in this forum, even when they play horribly?

There's a difference between a bad game and a bad season, but some people can't see that. And critism is fine here, as long as it's intelligent. Pointless cynicism is a waste of bandwidth.

Oh, you mean like what goes on in "Talking Smack?"

This was an absolute debacle.

The Redskins were outclassed by THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!

St. Louis is awful, and we should have destroyed them. We couldn't get anything going, and we looked like a team that just didn't know how to win.

Pathetic and embarrassing are the words of the day for the Washington Redskins those guys should just hang their heads and pray for redemption when they play the Browns.

Oh, I see, we're just too stupid to understand, thanks for clarifying. See, the rest of us were operating under the impression that we had just rolled through a dominant win, thank god you've offered clarity

big let down.. offense played poorly and special teams sucked. didn't look like we had our head in the game.

now that does not equate that we over-all suck as a team and that our future is bleak. we played poorly and the results reflect that.

we still are 4-2 after 1/3 of the season. we will have our bumps in the road and this was one of them. no cause for panic.

i, for one grampi, have not thrown in the towel.

Me neither. I'm just assessing the game and trying to figure where and how the Skins can improve from here.

So what's your take on the game? What went wrong today, and how can the Skins improve so this doesn't happen again?

What I don't get is why was JC having to hold the ball for so long when he dropped back to pass? Our receivers should've been able to get wide open all day long against their depleted secondary. That worries me.

Blitzes. When a team blitzes as much as the Rams did....you can bet there is somebody open. The trick is to find that vulnerability. That didn't happen.

It looked to me like there was a combination of issues. JC was feeling the rush, and not getting the ball out quickly enough, combined with fumbles, penalties and ST mistakes.

It's impossible to blame this game on one person or one group. It was the defense (as usual) keeping the team in a game without help. Poor offense, poor special teams put the defense in bad situations all game long.

It's a shame that the defense gave up that big play at the end, but it never should have come down to that. The defense only gave up 12 points. ANd most of those were set up by poor play on special teams.

We absolutely can't fault the defense for today's game. They more than did their job. All of the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the offense and special teams. I just don't understand how they got taken to task by a much inferior team. Over-confidence? Poor execution? Loss of focus? Maybe a little of all 3?

I agree with Hoss, this was unquestionably an ugly loss, the special teams play was as bad as I've seen from this team in quite some time. The pass blocking was inconsistent at some very inopportune times (I think you saw today why Zorn still wants Heyer to start at right tackle) and I was confused as to why they didn't test the Rams secondary a bit more. But none of that is season-over bad, it's addressable. I don't think the team is either as bad or as good as they have looked, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I can't fault the linebackers or the secondary...I can however fault the D-line. Taylor is a huge liability. He got absolutely no push the entire game. When was the last time we got any pressure front our front four without bringing anybody else? Not in the recent memory...and by recent, I mean the past 10 years.

The offense hasn't dominated anyone so far really. They've played well enough, and haven't turned the ball over, and they made some plays they needed to make while the defense kept them in the games.

But they aren't playing well enough to overcome 3 TO's

Posted: Sun Oct 12, 2008 5:58 pm
by grampi
The 3 TO's hurt them bad today as all 3 came when the Skins looked like they were going to score.

I did not get to see the game and I think it was a tough loss but that was all it was - ONE LOSS-

I am still a proud Redskins fan, PROUDLY SEATED ON THE VERY FRONT SEAT OF THE BUS.

Still think the 'skins will finish 12-4

It's only one loss, but a loss to a team we should've easily beaten. That's what makes it's so disappointing.

I also don't take too much from the loss - we are at 4-2.

there are some here that have predicted dire straits for this team since the pre-season and I guess after losing to a lesser team they are just feeling so vindicated this week - as we have pointed out, we are not as bad as we have looked and we are not as great as some think we are, but we did beat 2 of the better teams in the NFL in their house and we are at 4-2.

I guess 4-12 as grampi has predicted is still possible but that seems a little ridiculous to me, what do I know?

He also thought the game was over after we were down by 14 after only 3 series last week so I guess that shows how his predictions can be a little off at times

Why we HAD to lose this game

Posted: Sun Oct 12, 2008 6:18 pm
by tcwest10
Painful as it was to watch and see, especially considering the triumphs on the road, I think we needed to lose this game.
Why? I think you already know what I'm going to say...but I'm going to do it in my own, typically longwinded fashion, thank you very much.
The hype machine has been going full-bore for almost three weeks now.
"Nobody in America is picking against the Redskins this week."
(NFL Network)
"The Redskins are looking at 7-1 at the midway point". (Various outlets)
There had been an air of confidence not supported by evidence this year under this system, but by virtue of what had then been unlikely road victories. When facing an opponent heavily favored, we came up big. (A mulligan should be given for Week 1. That was a game no visitor was going to win)
Hearing Portis, tongue firmly in cheek, extoll the virtues of this Rams team earlier this week and stating that JC was "at most" 4th best in our division lacked the sincere "weak sister" tone that Gibbs would often use during the week to try and overinflate the opponent. Portis had a smirk on his face for the whole interview. If the ploy had had its intended effect, the Rams would come in here, thinking we were doubting ourselves...and be overwhelmed by the clever Redskins.
If I'm right about this, what really happened was the polar opposite. The team appeared flat and listless aside from a few bright spots; CP would be one of those.
The offensive line clearly had no respect for the Rams pass rush. JC looked to be in mid-year form, circa 2007. Harried and hampered.
The defensive line, even with the semi-return of Taylor, seemed surprised at the resilency of the Rams O-line. Rare penetration. (Which would be a great name for a band)
For the first time in four weeks, I found myself waiting for something bad to happen. It wasn't a long wait, was it?
Think about it, though. If we were going to lose a game we were supposed to win, better it should happen in Week 6 against a non-division opponent who won't likely factor in heavily in tie-breakers or wildcard spots.
My feeling is that we will have learned something very valuable from this, from the HC on down, and that is this: "Any Given Sunday..."
It's a tired cliche, a bromide. It's also a fact. You must have the same respect for every team you face, regardless of their W/L records, their stats, internal tumult...including a little gem of a stipulation in Haslett's contract about winning six to be the HC of the Rams next year.
This was a highly motivated team, with inferior players.
Hey...isn't that what McNugget said too? Huh.
You heard the team saying that they now have a bull's eye target (or an "x") on their own backs as a result of the recent success. Sadly, nobody took that statement, or the opponent, very seriously...and we're left with the result.
We're 4-2, 2-1 in our division. At this time, the Cowboys are losing and the Eagles are winning. The Giants play tomorrow. Will any of it matter?
It's up to us whether it does or not. With discipline and respect, we control our destiny.
Right now, though...we got what we needed. We got slapped right in the teeth by a team that supposedly had no chance in hell, and didn't fully respond. No pun intended, but we were "incognito". (I can't believe the effect that moron had on us.)
Okay, pun intended. Sue me.
By the way...nice to be back.

that about sums it up. after the last two weeks i thought heyer wouldnt get his job back but now he is. As for Kendall, that was just an idiotic play; wack it down or just catch it and fall. special teams were all the way around terrible. brooks sucked as usual and we need an explosive return threat. ARE just isnt good at it anymore like he was at PIT although i think he couldve busted off that one today if kareem moore wasnt in the way.

Maybe this loss will prevent us from getting too full of ourselves

All the questions raised -- grampi included -- are legitimate and worth asking in the aftermath of this dud of a game.

Even during the wins, the same issues popped up -- the lack of front-four pressure, the punter, Smoot's durability.

They'll probably arise again. But this team should be at a point where it can overcome those things.

But I will give props to Rogers. Today was the best game I've seen him play, given ths responsibility for 1-on-1 coverage on an A-list talent like Holt. It's also better then I thought he'd ever be capable of playing.

But we should be able to be "negative" and critical after games such as this and not be seen has having any less support than we did yesterday.

Even I'm not buying into my earlier prediction of 4-12. At worst this team looks like 9-7, but probably more like 10-6 or 11-5.

Didin´t get to watch the game, but for sure this loss is coming back to hunt us down the road. Good to be 4-2, but losing to the Rams really freaks me. Don´t know why the 1-15 Cowirls season comes to mind.

good to see tcwest back on the scene.

Maybe you're right - we may have needed this - this team should learn from this - but even if the lesson is learned, the best ting to happen to this team this year (and for years to come) was bringing in Zorn instead of Cowher or any of those other guys that some thought should be here. Cowher cannot hold this guys jockstrap

That punter may be out of here after this - I have been a supporter but we cannot let this go on any more imho.

btw - Arizona is giving the pukes a hard time right now as well. 24-14

This it. The Redskins lost to a weaker team, but the sky did not fall, and is not falling.

It happens. The Skins are not automatic winners of every gamer. They bungled today. Game is over.

Next week, next game, and, I predict, better play.

This team is improving, and has been improving ever since Gibbs chose to start Campbell. This team, today, is not the finished product. It's on the way.

Let's talk about the next game.
