I also think that we are just doing due diligence here and taking advantage of the opportunity to talk with staff on other programmes - if we announce who the HC is too soon we are losing the chance to get some info about some guys in the NFL that are the future movers and shakers.

I would be very surprised if Snyder makes a choice outside of the people here and I think Williams, Saunders and Smith are the guys.

I also am cautiously optimistic about this team without Gibbs - don't get me wrong I think he did a great job getting us back on track but I'm looking forward to Williams and Saunders and Danny Smith being able to do their thing. I'm sure they will be fired up to show that they are viable coaches and competitors without Gibbs

He's interviewing for other head coaching vacancies so even if he wanted to it makes no sense to become a defensive coordinator.

Besides that, isn't he still under contract with the Titans? Surely they would let him interview for head coaching jobs, but to leave them to do the same job with someone else? Impossible.

Remember, he wouldn't just be a "defensive coordinator"... it would be assistant head coach- defense, be re-united w/the guy that broke him into the league....AND get paid some serious coin from the The Danny. Makes alot of sense to me.

and...

Schwartz, 41, has many ties to the Washington area. He's a native of Baltimore and was a four-year letterman linebacker at Georgetown, where he was team captain as a senior and graduated with a degree in economics. He was a graduate assistant on the Maryland coaching staff for one year and later spent three seasons as a defensive assistant with the Baltimore Ravens.

Schwartz was a disciple of Gregg, no way Schwartz jumps over Gregg for the HC position. But it makes total sense that Gregg would want Schwart on his staff.

If he’s not going to hire GW it says a lot about him and what he’s learned over the past four year under Gibbs. First I’d like to see him hiring a GM to help him with the selection process but we know that’s not going to happen.
I don’t want a college coach, we see how that’s works out over the past few years. We are just now fully recovering from the SS years. At this point I’d like to see us bring in a young coordinator…the task now is to find the next Gibbs. I don’t want a retread like Cowher or Marty because I want the next guy to make his name as a Redskin. I don’t want high-profile because I don’t want it to be about money (now I know the next coach will be nicely compensated) what I mean is I don’t want Snyder to call and say “I’ll give you 5 mil to coach my team” and the guy say “no not interested”, “OK 6”, no “OK 7”. I want that guy who says I want to be the head coach of the Washington Redskins!! Let him “earned his payday” with us!!

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I think the NFL prohibits a coach under contract with one team from moving to another team unless it is a move up. If that is true, then Schwartz could not come to the Redskins as the Defensive Coordinator or whatever the title may be. It would not be a move up.

But My question is....

Why would Schwartz want to be a Deffensive Assistant Head Coach, If ATL is offering him the Head Coach Job.

I love the way you put it. My sentiments exactly. Two thumbs up to your logic.

Any position (even a ball boy) with the Washington Redskins would be considered a "move up" over a position with the Atlanta Falcons - seriously though, there are ways of wording a position to "get around" that requirement.

Some teams (just like some players) are a better fit and offer more opportunities - you might go to a team in order to improve your resume or because you know there will be something better there or elsewhere sooner.
Sometimes you need a change to better demonstrate what you can do.

It's a valid, and interesting question. My take on the Atlanta job is colored by comments by several of the commentators of Sirius NFL radio (including, btw, Dan Reeves), who view the ownership of Atlanta as truly medlesome. If that view is held broadly among NFL coaching talent, a rising star would think long and hard about taking a job there.

There are those who say the Danny is medlesome. Whether that is true, or not, I have no idea. I know that Gibbs did not find him so, nor have the rest of the current coaching staff. It certainly appears that the Danny may have taken advantage of the presence of Gibbs to learn about staying out of the way. Even Marty appears to be unjaded by his previous experience, and would consider a return. Gibbs clearly would advocate that a candidate should look at and consider employment with The Danny. I'm not so sure that the same is true of prior Head Coaches at ATL.

Bottom line, I think some coaching candidates would look much more favorably on a job in Washington than in Atlanta... even to the point of looking at a "lesser" statured job, in some cases.

Former Redskin Matt Bowen wrote:Williams best choice for Redskins

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Without a doubt, Gregg Williams is the best fit for the Redskins.

Williams has been running his defense like a head coach would run a team since he arrived in D.C. When you had an issue with something or someone on the team, you went to Williams. When you wanted to know what the appropriate dress code was for road trips, you asked Williams, and when you busted a coverage, or missed a tackle, you most definitely went to Williams.

I felt as if I played for two head coaches in Washington. I respected Coach Joe Gibbs, but I thought higher of Coach Williams. Maybe I was impressed with the way he ran the team defensive meeting or his talks the night before games, but I wanted to impress the man. He speaks with emotion when he talks to the defense, you believe him. More than any coach I have played for in this league, Williams was the guy I wanted to play for. He is a players’ coach, but he rules with an iron fist, equaling the perfect combination for winning. He demands your best in meetings, practices and on Sundays. He demands you be a professional.

Yes, there is time for fun, but when it comes down to business, it is about winning with Williams. By far, he is the most prepared coach I have ever seen. Scouting reports become manuals for winning, and film study a way of life. I thought I had pro football all figured out, but after two seasons with Williams, I became the student of the game I wanted to be.

However, what goes beyond saying, he prepares men for the rest of their lives. The toughness, the ability to deal with adversity in real life situations, is a trait I owe to playing for Williams. He is a master of putting players in the toughest situations, under the toughest circumstances, to challenge them, not only as players, but also as men. Practice is a beast, making Sundays a walk in the park. It is the long days, the constructive criticism in the heat, that prepare us for Sundays, and the days, and years that follow.

Williams is the right choice for this franchise. You don’t need a big-name guy when you already have one down the hall.

Gotta say I agree with the man.

WOW high praise from Matt. I had an opportunity (from this site) to attend a mini-camp in 2005 and by far and away the highlight of the weekend was GW presser....The guy is as intense as they come...Jansenfan was there with me and he'll tell you after GW spoke I was ready to strap it on!!!

Certainly for some. It would depend upon that coach's reason for coaching, I suppose. Joe Gibbs was offered a ton of money to go to Atlanta once... he didn't.

As YOU said...

On the surface it makes sense....Snyder tells Williams your my guy, who do want as D co-ordinator Williams says Schwartz.

Could it be any easier??

Hmm. Very interesting. That might just be the best case scenario. Because if I am not mistaken they worked with each other before or in the same system in Tennessee.

Clinton Portis just said on ESPN First Take that he and everyone else in the locker room are hoping that it's Gregg Williams. He also said that the new coach is gonna come in and work with what we got, and he followed that up by saying we don't need major change, and that Gregg Williams has the respect of everyone, including players and the organization. He went on to say that it's on the organization to go out and bring in whoever they want, and the coach that comes in allows an opportunity to go out and play. Clinton said they have something good going on, they can build off their season, and he doesn't think they need a lot of change.

I agree. GW is the coach, this Tenn cat is the DC.

I can't wait to see Al run this offense like it's supposed to be done. GW is going to tell Al to do his thing and let it rip! I can't wait.

OK, this is where Schwartz falls off my radar (with apologies for reading the Washington Times):

http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080111/SPORTS01/386382145/1005/SPORTS

In five years as Titans defensive coordinator, Schwartz's defences have been ranked 19th, 25th, 27th, 32nd, and then 5th in the NFL?! This hardly seems like the CV of a defensive genius, does it? He doesn't come close to Williams' record.

Makes me wonder why he's getting looked at for jobs elsewhere as well?
