I love this starting secondary:

CBs- Springs, Rogers, Smoot
Ss- Taylor, Landry

But it's impossible to not think about how we still have a very subpar defensive line and we've had 3 Top 10 picks in the last 4 years and not once have we taken a DT or DE. We've gone secondary all 3 times so we better have one of if not the best secondaries in football for years to come.

I agree.
When the best D Line prospect available is a 19year old, and the best overall D player available is a 4 yr starter at LSU, i think you gotta go with Landry,

I'm sure we were offered something, we just were not willing to take it. I'm sure that our owner thought he could get top value. He should not be in the draft room. At least the rumor of vinny being fired should be good news this week.

Prepare to be dissapointed because a good secondary is not obtainable without a good pass rush. Whoever tels you different is lying to you.

But isn't that a sign of a change? A good thing? We actually decided not to make a trade that would put us on the short end.

What kind of safety is he though? The impression I'm getting is he's in the Sean Taylor mold. Is he a leader? Is he disciplined? What's it going to be like having Taylor and a rookie back there?

Yes 19 but a brilliant player. If age is the biggest problem he has then I would have jumped in a heart beat. The kid is growning. He's at a point to where you can easily "Coach 'em up." I'm sure that Landry's a bit more set in his ways and more than anything, don't forget that we don't really need a safety. Omar does just fine.

Isn't that basically exactly what I was saying when I wrote "... But it's impossible to not think about how we still have a very subpar defensive line...."

We have to improve our pass rush and I don't see how we can do it without any more draft picks.

Then there's this. Maybe Miami was able to read this draft exceptionally well and knew they'd be able to draft Quinn at #9 -- their own pick .... and not give up a thing?

That could be why the Redskins didn't find much when they made trade overtures.

But with Gaines Adams gone, would you really have either a) paid 30 million dollars to the second best D-End with conditioning issues or b) pay 30 million to a 19 year old.

I think we went with the BPA Best Player Available strategy on defense..and it may prove to work out if Carter continues to play well, and Kedric Goldson continues to progress. The weakest link is R Dend, but I don't think a ton of people are enamored with Jamal Anderson.

We need a pass rush no doubt, but unfortunately the best D End was gone and I'm not sure I would take the second best guy who was probably rated (as by most) much farther behind Landry who also plays a position of need.

If Mel kiper is 7/7 so far, Im sure other GMs were able to guage it as well.

We need to get that freakishly big guy that I made a thread about, Walter Thomas.

Great pickup by the Skins. We'll be happy with Landry.

I think this was a great selection because:

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a well-proportioned frame with a thick chest, broad shoulders … Instinctive athlete who seems to always be in position to make the play … Has the foot speed, balance and explosive closing burst to get into position and consistently make plays inside the box … Highly competitive and his performance elevates that of the players around him … Has the loose hips and leaping ability to adjust to the ball in flight, timing his jumps to get to the pass at its high point … Hits with good pop on contact and charges hard to fill the rush lanes … Has the physical and mental ability to play any position in the secondary and also has seen time as a linebacker in the nickel package … Very alert to blocking schemes and screens, showing no hesitation closing on the play … Too smart to bite on pump fakes and misdirection … Very good at recognizing play-action and bootlegs … Sees the field well, especially when playing deep in the zone … His quickness is evident in man coverage, as he is effective at staying on the hip of the receiver and has the acceleration to mirror on long routes … Has the feet and hip snap to make quick adjustments on the move and can handle any receiving threats in man coverage … Has the hand strength to press and reroute tight ends and backs working underneath … Has very smooth moves when transitioning from his backpedal and shows crispness coming out of his breaks, staying low in his pads with no wasted steps … Has the recovery burst to cover the deep end of the field and the vision to see and anticipate the routes as they develop … Uses his long arms effectively to break up the pass, reaching around to impede the receiver's extension going for the ball … Has a keen understanding of zone concepts and picking up receivers in that area … Shows urgency closing in the short zone and is very quick to plant and drive, taking good angles to make plays on the ball … Runs with a quick stride to cover ground in a hurry and is quick to recover when beaten … Not the type who will get into trouble by eyeballing the backfield for too long … Gets to top speed in an instant and times his leaps and adjusts his body to compete for the ball in a crowd … Natural hands catcher with the big hands to snatch and pluck away from the frame … Slants and angles well to shut down the cutback lanes and closes quickly when he locates the running play … Hits with a thud in attempts to fill the rush alley and also when attacking ball carriers on the perimeter … Good wrap-up tackler, but also has the upper body strength to drag down his man or put the opponent on the ground with a collision tackle … When he gets low in his pads and wraps, few ball carriers can escape … Breaks down quickly and shows the ability to stick his hat and drive his man back … The thing that separates him from other safeties is his ability to attack the ball carrier's outside leg to impede any forward progress … Has the range to roam the field and make plays along the sidelines, but is also efficient in taking on bigger blockers to stack and control inside the box … Calls the defensive signals and excels at getting his teammates set up and in position to make the play.

Negatives: Hits with authority, but could use additional bulk (will sometimes get stonewalled in attempts to split double teams) … Has natural hands for the interception, but will try to attack the ball a lot, resulting in some missed tackles because he prefers to play the ball instead of attack his assignment … Has good recovery skills, but will get a bit reckless and out-run the play … When he gets reckless in his play, he is prone to costly penalties (flagged six times in 2006).

Compares To: Brian Dawkins, Philadelphia Eagles … While not a disruptive blow-them-up type of tackler like Dawkins, Landry is just as quick and smart breaking down plays. Some might wonder why his statistics in 2006 were lower than previous seasons, but it is because of the respect he commands from opposing offensive coordinators. As when Dawkins entered the league, Landry will soon rank with the elite among NFL free safeties.

We'll, that wraps it up for today. Nothing else to see here folks, it's time to go home.

Hopefully this'll teach those bums in our f/o to stop mortgaging the future.

Good wrap-up tackler, but also has the upper body strength to drag down his man or put the opponent on the ground with a collision tackle

I hope this is true and he really does know the preferred wrap-and-drop technique of tackling -- and when it's a better choice than the kill-shot technique.

Too many guys just hit you as hard as they can and hope you fall down.

I hope we've learned that which is. If anything I hope we pick up more picks for next year...

See man, this is freaking retarded. I'm just sitting here in my recliner getting more pissed off by the second. We made a good pick in Landry but we can't even experiment with more picks because we have none. We're totally screwed and have no one to blame but ourselves. Maybe Gibbs finally saw the light and will keep his commitment to not pissing away anymore picks.

Since we don't pick till tommorow. Something in me really wants the Skins to get that freak of nature Walter Thomas. If we're going to take a chance, lets get a beast of a man we can coach up!

Obviously, I'm happy. This is a great pick, IMO.

I know some are disappointed. Well, I truely believe they will still address the d-line. Landry was the safe pick at #6.

BTW - I still think they will add a pick today.

Miami takes Ted Ginn. There's goes the notion that they were going to trade up for Quinn. Skins made the right choice and I bet they didn't get a good offer.

Brady dropping big-time!

This just goes to show that the media doesn't have as much impact on GM's as they think. I think Brady Quinn is good, but I actually think this experience pretty much ensures his success. Not only will he go to a better team, but the farther he slides the more incentive he has to beat the crap out of them when he plays them.

This dude was talking about going number one. Now it looks like he'll fall to 15 unless someone makes a trade.

Brady Quinn's girlfriend is mediocre at best. She looks like she see's the dollars leaving every pick he slips. She looks way unhappy.
