Fred Smoot Still Does Not Have A Deal/Fisher Here
Like I've been writing, the Skins were the first team to pounce on him. They pushed for him. They got deep into negotiations. They got close to a deal. They have no deal and had no deal and Joe Gibbs said just a few minutes ago, "No deal is imminent with anyone." That includes Smoot, although the sides expect to speak again tonight.
Howard just heard that Smoot is leaving the building and flying home. (Update - Smoot in the lobby now just about to leave) Could he still sign here, sure? But all of the stuff on certain website was way premature if not completely wrong.
Hmm, do you think maybe someone within this building would leak a false rumor that Smoot was already signed to a website owned by the same guy who owns the Redskins? And thenpeople from that website barrage profootballtalk.com with emails until they post the same thing - that Smoot had signed here yesterday afternoon 0 you know, to like scare off other teams or get out the perception that Smoot was already signed here?
Nah, couldn't be. Stuff happens during the recruiting period of free agency and I know it's dog eat dog out there. I ain't hating even if something like that happened, 'cause that's the NFL and any little advantage helps. Just a theory.
Also, Travis Fisher - who has a serious set of dreads - just pulled up to The Park in Jerry Grey's Benz. Like I said, he's a Rosenhaus guy, which is never a bad thing around here.

Until a deal is done can't say for sure, but maybe we're trying to not overpay? It's not just the front office, he needs to price himself for what he's worth too. I'm glad to have him back, but if and only if it's for a reasonable number.
Hail to the Redskins!

Whether that's leverage to get Springs to take a pay cut and/or leverage to get him to move to safety. If they are serious about moving him to safety I wonder how he projects as a Strong safety since Taylor is the FS. Usually you're looking for a bigger body who can play closer to the line instead of an aging CB who is better in coverage.
Again, bringng back Smoot is fine as long as we don't pay him starting CB money.
Second, I don't understand how you can project Rogers to improve so much. He just isn't very good, and I haven't seen anything to suggest he could dramatically improve.
Again, Smoot is a nice option only if his salary is reasonable and he is used as nickel/backup cb.
Don't take my word for it, Scouts Inc. rates Smoot at 63, Rogers at 71 and Springs at 78. Considering Springs is getting older and more injury prone while Carlos is getting better, it is only natural that he will be the best CB this time next year.
I don't know what games you watched but I saw every snap of every Skins game this year and Rogers is becoming a very solid corner and He tackles like a safety. In contrast, Smoot is a motor mouth who doesn't tackle like an every down CB should. Here's an excerpt from Smoot's scouting report:
lacks courage when asked to fill hard and play run support. He is a poor tackler and his lack of physical play also shows up when bigger receivers outmuscle him for the ball. As much as Smoot likes to chirp and talk trash his confidence is easily shaken should he get beaten deep. In off-man coverage he is susceptible to double moves and will route-read, often guessing when playing zone and getting himself in trouble. Because he has shown excellent man coverage ability in the past and also has the ball skills and speed to cover elite NFL wide receivers Smoot will find teams vying for his services during free agency, but his baggage, his poor play in the Tampa cover 2 scheme and his frequent injuries over the past two seasons will keep the bidding at a reasonable level.
Smoot Is A Redskins The sides, after another day of talk, have come to an agreement in the last fwe minutes. It's done.. Smoot was scheduled to leave here this afternoon at one point, but returned to the building and they finally got this thing sorted out before another night of dinners.
Hope to get more details on the contract shortly, but go ahead and dig those Smoot jerseys out of the closet. I am banking on a press conference tommorow.

Washington Redskins: Cornerback Fred Smoot really didn't want to leave the Redskins. Now, he feels as though he's come back home.
Smoot signed a five-year deal worth $25 million Saturday with the Redskins to return after spending three turbulent seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
But this move wasn't about money. Smoot went for the money three years ago when he signed a six-year, $34.7 million but Smoot struggled with his play and with some off-the-field problems.
The Vikings cut him last week, but Smoot couldn't wait to make a trip to Washington and try to talk the Redskins into re-signing him. While Smoot's agent, Bus Cook, was negotiating the contract, Smoot was in Daniel Snyder's office trying to speed up the process to try to get the deal done.
Smoot is the second defensive addition for the Redskins, who added linebacker London Fletcher on Friday.
^Considering Clements got $80 million, I think Smoot's deal is just right about where it should be. And I'll bet that contract is back-end loaded and will contain certain parameters. I think he is happy to be back and this should rekindle the fire in him.
Smoot's agent, Bus Cook wrote:"He may have gotten a better deal by going somewhere else -- we don't know that -- but he's glad to be home," Cook told The Associated Press. "Sometimes that's more important than money."
That's something you hear everyday And the way the market is running...

Huh? Rogers is developing into a great corner. He's improved each year and is EASILY better then Smoot right now. He's bigger, just as fast and a much better tackler. Signing Smoot is only good if we get him cheap so he adds depth as a nickel corner.
Besides the fact he gets burned all the time and I have better hands than he does. Literally not figurtively I have better hands than he does. Smoot is way better than Carlos ever will be.
If you had your way, Darrel Green would have been sitting in a retirement home in 1990.
This is a good signing of a proven, durable, defensive leader, who understands this defense. It meets the needs of the team, didn't cost an arm and a leg, and, he WANTS to be here... many teams wanted a shot at him, but he spoke only to the Redskins.
We also wouldn't have had Mike Barrow, Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith.

He's no spring chicken, but he's not too old. It's probably only really a three year contract in practical terms, and he'd be 34 at the end of that, which wouldn't exactly make him a coffin dodger.
Plus, he's NEVER missed a game in his NFL career.
You can make the age argument if there's evidence that he's breaking down...but the guy just had a phenomenal season.

Smoot can cover Rogers can't, Rogers gets burned all the time. He has bricks for hands.
I predict he will be one of our starting corners. Who will be the other? Only time will tell. The pressure is on Rogers and Springs. They didn't have anyone to push them last year but now, Smoot is here to start so they better bring their "A" game.
After watching the video, Fletcher seems very smart and articulate. It seems as though he is going to be a leader on the field and someone capable of making the right decisions. Now to the real problem, we know Fletcher is # 59 but what number is Smoot going to hold up tomorrow at the press conference? . On a side note, both Fletcher and Smoot play their old teams next year. We play the bills here and vikings in Minny.
