Oh, without a doubt teams should and do consider potential. You have to look at how a player could be used more effectivley, whether it be in a different system, surrounded by different personnel (both coaches and players) or simply a change of scenery.

But potential performance in the future is different than theoretical performance in the past.

From http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/s ... index.html ...

The Washington Redskins are trying to trade quarterback Patrick Ramsey. He might be worth a fourth-round pick if the Bills are interested and that's all it would take.
-- Democrat and Chronicle

Next season's NFL salary cap likely will be about $108 million per team if the owners and the players' union can agree to an extension of their collective bargaining agreement. It probably will be set at $95 million to $96 million per club if there's no labor extension. Last season's salary cap was $85.5 million per team.
-- Washington Post

This is great news if it comes to pass. We'll be able to afford a long term agreement with Abraham - if he can 'behave' in the locker room.

I'll miss PR. I think he has a whole lot of potential but for a number of reasons - it just didn't mesh here. I think he'll thrive elsewhere and wish him the best.

That is the sad thing. He did not get the chance to play. All we can argue is that he would have done much better than a much more expensive and injured starter.

If we trade Ramsey, and I think we might, we will have to pray to every single divinity that Brunell's knees hold.

We do have Jason Campbell, a great D, and a running game.

Ramsey got the chance to start the season as i recall. The bears blitzed ramsey ,looking like a deer in headlights almost got his head takin off. What an incredible job he did considering he was our starter all training camp and preseason...in year 2 in the same system....and yet he still comes out and looks like a rookie. Why is Ramsey annointed next great qb? cause he was a first round pick? c'mon.

Good riddance PRAM... no we dont need YOU to make the playoffs. All we need is Gibbs.

Okay I'm not getting into the Ramsey/Brunell debate but you're argument is baseless and frankly uninformed. The Bears had the #2 overall defense last year and they finished the year with 41 sacks. On top of that they lead the NFL in qb rating, holding opponent's to an everage qb rating of 61.2 so Ramsey is not the only qb that they made look terrible last season. Ramsey's time in DC hasn't turned out the way that most of us hoped it would when he was drafted but to say that he is a failure because of the way he played in 1 half against the Bears last season is rediculous.

Uninformed? Ive watched every second of his career. Uninformed im not thanks to directv. Yes im basing him on one half of one game cause that was his opportunity to break out. Instead he came out and fell flat on his face. If you watched the game you would know he looked LOST.

The point is that the Bears made just about every qb they faced last year look lost. So is Ramsey somehow supposed to dominate a team when just about every other qb that faced them struggled? That makes no sense. And how did Brunell look against the Bears after he came in that game? He looked just as lost.

Ramsey 6-11, 105 yard, 1 int
Brunell 8-14, 70 yards

So I still don't see how you can determine from one half against a top defense that a qb isn't able to be a succesful starter in the NFL.

Since there is virtually no chance of this trade happening (due to our cap situation and the CBA crap) I just hope we can trade Patrick for Draft Picks.

Either like a 4th and a 7th or like 2 6th rounders...

exactly, ramsey was moving the ball pretty well, considering the caliber of defense. also don't forget- he threw for a touchdown in that extremely limited time he was in the game. it won't show up on the stat sheet because cooley was called for a completely bogus offensive pass interference, but it was most definitely a touchdown. incidentally, it was the play right after that BS penalty when the insanely illegal hit (that was not flagged) caused ramsey to fumble and knocked him out of the game (and the redskins' entire season).

Ramsey did not look lost. He, in fact, threw a TD pass that was called back through no fault of his own, He played a very respected half game with good yardage and a TD pass. The sack was due to Jansen's missed block and he suffered a terrible hit.

The notion that he blew anything in that game is so wrong and absurd that its difficult to respond to it,
Ramsey has fine stats for the skins, He/s by far the most productive Redskin over the last 4 years with 39 TD passes in the eqivalent of 21 games and over 5000 yds. In spite of spot duty, he's way ahead of Portis and Brunell both of whom have played more than he has, as well as Coles, Gardner, Cooley, etc.

In what way has he blown anything. He has a lifetime QB rating of over 75 and last year turned in a rating of over 95, both much higher than Brunell's. I guess what you're saying is that there's a double standard. Brunell and others can look like crap game after game and be stolid Redskins; Ramsey's blows it when he doesn't look like Johnny Unitas.
