Trade seems to be a wash unless the Nats are freeing up salary ... I know some people like him but I am largely unimpressed by Bowden as a GM ... Kearns and Lopez are really past that window where you might still hope they develop into core players and Wagner couldn't even crack the Reds bullpen. Unless the Nats can turn around and deal these guys for prospects (unlikely) there is little to applaud here. I want the Nats to win but I want them to do that by building a top-notch farm club.

Not that anyone cares, but this move isn't as bad as I initially thought, the Nats got more than they gave up; Kearns and Lopez can suit up regularly for the next three to five seasons until the team is able to restock its farm system. I'm still not a Bowden fan but I will give credit where credit is due. This isn't the move that turns the Nats into winners but it appears to be a step in the right direction.

We just traded Livan Hernandez for two pitching prospects.

Check it out here:

http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060807&content_id=1597395&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was

WASHINGTON -- In need to improve their farm system, the Nationals traded right-hander Livan Hernandez to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday for Minor League right-hander Garrett Mock and left-hander Matt Chico.
Mock and Chico, who will report to Double-A Harrisburg, were drafted by assistant general manager Mike Rizzo, who was the scouting director of the Diamondbacks.

Hernandez last pitched for the Nationals on Sunday against the Padres and was solid, tossing seven innings and giving up two runs. Hernandez has been on the trade block for weeks and was rumored to be going the Mets, but they were not willing to give up a top prospect in return. Hernandez, 31, went 9-8 with a 5.34 ERA in 24 starts for Washington in 2006.

Mock, a University of Houston product, is currently 4-8 with a 4.95 ERA in 23 starts for Double-A Tennessee of the Double-A Southern League, where he worked at least seven shutout innings four times this season and tallied a pair of 10-strikeout efforts. Mock's 117 strikeouts on the season currently rank fourth in the Southern League.

Chico, 23, was 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 13 starts for Tennessee, where he posted a .211 batting average against. He allowed three earned runs or less in each of his 13 starts this season, and went 6-0 with a 1.87 ERA in his seven most recent Double-A assignments. Chico, who also enjoyed a 10-start stint with Lancaster of the Class A California League earlier this season, is 10-6 with a 2.81 ERA (41 ER, 131 1/3 IP) in 23 starts in 2006. Chico ranked among Arizona Minor Leaguers in strikeouts (second with 112) and ERA (fourth at 2.81) upon being acquired by Washington.

Livan wasn't doing much for us so I guess I like this trade. Hopefully at least one of these guys will be good enough to play on our roster in the near future.

I took my son to the Nats-Braves game yesterday. We got to see a three-hit gem by John Smoltz. Chipper Jones also moved into the #3 spot all-time for homers by a switch-hitter. But the reason I am posting is because we got our picture taken by the Braves, and posted on their website (of course they are trying to sell you the prints). I just happened to be wearing a Redskins' shirt, though it didn't bring us any luck last night. Anyway, here is the picture:

Great shot! I hope you both enjoyed yourselves. Why is there a watermark in the shot?

They want you to buy the photo. I just captured it, and posted it myself.

Maybe its because I shave twice a year, but I sweat more without the facial hair.

Oh, and back on topic, Nats are the best team in the NL - East south of the Mason-Dixon line that aren't from a state.

That's because of your 4% body fat. Me, I have just a little more... er... insulation.
