Jamal Lewis Suspended (may miss game sunday)

Post by chicosbailbond »

I didn't see this info anywhere here...

sorry if this has been posted... but i like the way this sounds...

Fox Radio is reporting that the Ravens have been informed that Jamal Lewis will be suspended for two games and will be fined four week's pay. The decision is expected to be announced on Friday morning. Should Lewis try to appeal the decision, he would almost certainly be available to play on Sunday. If not, the suspension would begin immediately, and Lewis would miss this Sunday's game against Washington and the next game against Buffalo.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Ravens sources told FOXSports.com that they were told the penalty for Lewis' involvement in a federal drug case will be a two-game suspension as well as an additional two-week fine. Head coach Brian Billick tried to prepare his players Thursday morning by informing them that Lewis will be suspended.

The only holdup on the final decision is from NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who needs to sign off on the punishment and could choose to alter the penalty Friday morning by making it a four-game suspension.

The NFL had no comment.

Lewis' salary for this year is $2.434 million and thus will lose out on $143,175 per week for a total of $572,700.

If Tagliabue follows through on the two games plus two weeks fine, then Lewis will have a chance to appeal. Even in the case of an appeal, the NFL will look to get the entire escapade over shortly as they do not want this ugly incident to continue on throughout the year.

There is also a chance that Lewis and the Ravens could decide to have the suspension enforced immediately, which would mean he'd miss Sunday's game vs. the Redskins and then the team's next game, following their bye, against the Bills. Normally the league doesn't suspend a player after a Tuesday because it does not allow a team to properly prepare for a Sunday game. However, if the commissioner hands down his decision Friday and Lewis immediately says he will not appeal, then he would be suspended for Sunday's game vs. Washington.

If Lewis appeals and loses during the bye then he would miss the Bills game and the Ravens' next game against the Eagles. It is unclear what the team's strategy will be.

Sweet. I hope he misses the game. Now the one-dimensional offense will be 0 dimensional. Their backups are decent but "Musa Smith and Chester Taylor are no Jamal."

I'd rather see him against the Skins. Our best against whoever's best. I don't want any edges - I simply want this team to outplay another team. Start to finish, I'd like to see my Redskins whoop some tail on somebody - ANYBODY. If Lewis is suspended - I'll live though :0)

The report is there is no way that Jamal Lewis is going to miss this weeks game. With the Ravens on a bye the following week. They are going to have him sit out the Buffalo and Philly game. Bring it on Jamal, the skins defense is ready for you.

chester taylor is a better back out of the backfield...(on passes) i think that type of back is more scary... we have proven this year so far that you cant just run us over... so jamal may be better for us than taylor or smith...

i don't expect us to blitz as much this week... b/c boller can't beat us if we drop into coverage... however he may beat us if we sell out on the blitz... play the run tough and drop into coverage....

i like the under in this game...

The Bills game is a given so the question really is Does he sit against us and play against Illy or play against us and sit against the Eagles. I'd perfer to see him sit this week and be extremely hunger against Illy. It looks like it's up to him and the Ravens (although this is suppose to be a punishment) more than the NFL

I wouldn't get too excited. Jamal being out the game means squat if we keep playing like we have been. The o-line is decent.

Plus Chester is a great catcher out of the backfield, thats what we keep getting out butts kicked with.

Tagliabue rips Lewis in suspension letter
David Ginsburg / Associated Press
Posted: 24 minutes ago

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - As first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer on Thursday, Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis was suspended for two games without pay by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy, one day after pleading guilty to trying to set up a drug deal four years ago.

Lewis will not appeal the punishment and will miss those games in late October, the Ravens said. He plans to play Sunday night at Washington.

Lewis also was fined two weeks' salary, $761,000, in the decision issued Friday by NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. That means Lewis will lose a total of about $1.5 million.

"You have needlessly sullied your own reputation and reinforced unfair and negative public perceptions of NFL players generally," Tagliabue wrote. "The consequences of your poor judgment include incarceration, suspension from the NFL and the loss of $761,000 in salary. The long-term damage to your own reputation may well be even greater."

A drug-related legal violation is grounds for league discipline under the NFL's substance abuse policy.

A player has five days to appeal a suspension. Though Lewis does not plan to appeal, Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said, he will use the five days to consult with his lawyers, allowing him to play against the Redskins. Baltimore is off the following weekend.

Lewis will miss the Ravens' home game Oct. 24 against Buffalo and their game Oct. 31 in Philadelphia.

Under an agreement with prosecutors, he will not miss any playing time while serving his sentence of four months in federal prison and two months in a halfway house. The sentence will start after the regular season ends in January and conclude before the 2005 season begins in September.

Lewis missed practice Thursday while in Atlanta and rejoined the team Friday. Before practice, he spoke excitedly about putting his problems behind him.

"It's a load off my shoulders. Now I can continue on," he said. "I don't have to worry about that anymore, and I can just get on with my life and play football."

Lewis pleaded guilty to using a cell phone to try to set up a drug transaction in the summer of 2000 in Atlanta. He knew an NFL suspension would follow his plea, and he was prepared to accept his punishment.

"It's over. Something happened, I have to suffer the consequences, and that's what I'm doing," he said. "The big picture is done with. I'm happy that everything is over with. So, I move on and do what I have to do on the football field."

Lewis did plenty on the field last season, running for 2,066 yards - the second-highest single-season total in NFL history. But his off-field problems will put an indelible stamp on his effort to come up with a suitable encore.

Lewis will be pressed to defend his NFL rushing title, and his absence could end up costing the Ravens a chance to repeat as AFC North champions and return to the playoffs. But Lewis risked receiving a minimum 10-year prison sentence if he went ahead with his court case in Atlanta and was convicted.

"As long as my career is all right, I'm all right," he said. "I'll be here next season and this season, so it's over with."

Before his plea, Lewis faced the possibility of missing time during a trial that was slated to begin Nov. 1.

"The fact that we don't have to deal with this any further is a good thing," coach Brian Billick said.

"Even though he has dealt with this very well, I can't help but imagine that it's a bit of a relief. It allows him to free his mind up totally now because there is definition. That's got to be a positive thing, rather than the what ifs, when will it happen, what could happen; that definition should allow him to be relaxed and do his job."

Backups Chester Taylor and Musa Smith will replace Lewis in the Baltimore backfield during his suspension.

"We can't lose any productivity," Smith said. "Me and Chester are ready, and we're going to hold it down while he's out."

Lewis was accused of trying to help broker a cocaine deal for co-defendant Angelo Jackson, a childhood friend, during conversations with a government informant. Charges against Jackson are pending.

Lewis agreed to testify at Jackson's trial, still set for Nov. 1. By that time, Lewis will have completed his NFL suspension. He expects to work out during his absence and reclaim his starting spot.

"I have a good work ethic. I think I've proven that," he said. "From a physical standpoint, I'll miss something. But as far as anything else, I don't think I'll miss a beat."

Lewis said he hopes others will benefit from his mistake, which occurred before he played his first NFL game.

"Watch your friends and who you have around you," he said. "That's the big picture of this whole thing."

jamal is not going to appeal... but he is going to use the 5 days to consult with his lawyers....

this =

the ravens think they need him to win the game... so the ravens are really taking us seriously and know they are in for a tough game...

this is a defining game for both teams... it is crazy to say must win in october but... the balt v. skins and tenn. v. GB are both must win games for all 4 teams..

the teams that win these games have a chance the losers are just practicing for next year...

Mark Brunell has taken the blame for the ofensive woes of the Skins, Portis has said little other than I'll let my play do the talking (after Buges said his peace) and the defense is still fielding the same guys that we've played the last few weeks. It may not be a must win game for us or Baltimore but I think the posters around here will field alot better come Monday morning.
Tenn vs GB I'll take the 5th (I like the Titans, the Wife is a diehard Chessehead)

Talk is cheap to me now. I dont care what they say, because the same stuff is said every year. When they do it on the field I'll be happy.
