Kyle Doesn't Want to Work with Mike Anymore

Post by riggofan »

Moot point? Between this story, and Schefter reporting today that Mike wants to come back I'm scratching my head a little bit.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... h-his-dad/

Earlier this week, Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan defended his decision to join forces with his father after Mike Shanahan became head coach of the Redskins.

Kyle reportedly has made a new decision. To move on.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Kyle Shanahan has decided to no longer work with his father, and that Kyle will embark “on his own path” next year.

Lost in that assessment is the fact that the decision may not rest with Kyle. If he’s under contract beyond 2013, owner Daniel Snyder could insist on keeping him around. Which would be yet another move in the ongoing game of chess/checkers/chicken between Daniel Snyder and Mike Shanahan.

Regardless, Kyle never should have gone to Washington in the first place. While it’s great when fathers and sons can work together, it makes a lot more sense when the father owns the business. When the father is an employee, hiring the son creates a potential mess.

The mess becomes even more complicated when, as Jason La Canfora of NFL Network points out, the father also hires a bunch of the son’s friends — and people in the organization start complaining about the son.

Mike has, in our view, spent a lot of effort this week and previously to insulate Kyle from scrutiny or criticism for the situation in Washington. While Kyle may get a shot to be an offensive coordinator elsewhere, his head-coaching prospects have taken a hit during his four years of working with his father.

IMO I think Kyle is saying his dad screwed up. He doesn't want to be a part of dad and son professionally. We could always put all the blame on Dan the cancer though.

I agree. I like Kyle. Except for abandoning the run earlier in the season, and I blame that on the HC for not jumping in there sooner, I think Kyles offense works.

This is a pretty scathing article about Kyle.

Some choice quotes:

Several members of the organization said Kyle Shanahan was a cause of internal strife, surrounding himself with young coaches with inferior experience, and allowing for no checks and balances of outside voices in the offensive coaching rooms.

“This is the NFL, it's not supposed to be a training ground for coaches,” said someone who has worked with Kyle Shanahan in Washington. “It's ridiculous. Look at this staff. It sucks. Mike's best buddy is (longtime Shanahan assistant and current linebackers coach Bob Slowik), and Slowik's son is in his second year out of college and he's on the staff. Everyone on the staff is in his first or second year except for Mike and Kyle and Haslett (defensive coordinator Jim Haslett) and Raheem (Morris, the secondary coach), and everyone knows Raheem is there because he is close with Kyle. Those two go way back.

“Kyle's not that confident, so they set him up with a bunch of yes men rather than have some experienced coaches to push him. It's like Kyle is the pied piper and these kids just follow him around. I mean, Mike has been a head coach for 20 years -- usually a guy like that has a posse he can bring with him. So he's got Bobby Turner (running backs coach) here, and Slowik, and that's it. How does that happen? How does he end up hiring all of his son's buddies?

And..

As a former member of the organization put it: “Kyle bitches about everything, and then his father has to fix it. He bitches about the food in the cafeteria, he bitches about the field, he bitches about the equipment. He complains and then Mike takes care of it. Kyle is a big problem there. He is not well liked.”

...

Furthermore, Kyle Shanahan has long had a very strained relationship with Griffin, sources said, with one staff member saying Shanahan treats Griffin like, “a JV quarterback.”

He sounds like a real nice young man.

This answers a lot of my previous questions about these young coaches...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't our QB coach one of those inexperienced new guys? After all we gave up for RG3, I would think you'd bring in only the best of the best to mold the future of your organization.

I know he's still a player, and hasn't tried coaching, but I think when Peyton is done in the NFL, he would make an excellent QB coach (or even head coach).

I personally think Kyle is saying this to distance himself from his father because he thinks he'll be gone next year, and is trying to save face to get a job elsewhere.

When Peyton retires he will have $$$ thrown at him from all the networks. Everyone will want him as an analyst. I think there will be equal interest in him as an Offensive Coordinator. He already pretty much does that on the field. OC for a couple of years, and then straight to a head coach.

If people are being let go and Mike returns I wonder who should be responsible for that?

Kyle doesn't even want to work for him anymore.

no worries mate - I kind of thought that was the case

the Redskins have forever been a 'target' of the local media and Dan certainly did not help much by basically taking away all of the Washington Posts free passes

there are many DC reporters that will throw as much stuff as they can at the wall and hope that it 'sticks' and they can 'claim' ownership

most all of this 'reporting' about Dan and Mike is IMHO complete BS and is fueled by a 3 win season in 14 games

Tweet from Mike's presser today:

#Redskins Mike Shanahan: Perhaps this is innocent (or not) - but he has mentioned Gary Kubiak twice today in the last five minutes.

I'm predicting right now that Mike will be back next year, with Kubiak as the OC. I honestly think Snyder will give him an ultimatum type thing: fire the majority of your staff and you can return.

It seems that despite all the BS reports to the contrary Dan and Mike don't have near the problem with each other

this according to our Sonny …
During Sunday's pregame show, former Redskins quarterback and current broadcaster Sonny Jurgensen said he expects Shanahan to return in 2014.
"Do you have anybody in mind?" Jurgensen asked (via Sports Bog). "Who are you going to bring in? No, I don't think it's a done deal by any means. I think that [Snyder and Shanahan] will sit down and talk. I was talking with Dan yesterday about it, and he likes Mike Shanahan. He does. They play golf together. They get along. There's no problems there. Yes, they will sit down and talk about what they're doing and who they're doing it with. …"

the media must hate him for spreading lies and complete falsehoods like this

this is just Sonny's opinion mind you but I think he has a better handle on things than any of the press guys :D

Great thoughts.

I think his love for the game might sway him to coach (closer to the action). I suppose it would all depend on where he's at energy wise.

He'd do well in either situation I think. Starting at OC, as you said, would be a great start for him.

I doubt he starts at OC right away. He'd probably be a QB coach for a few years first. If he goes into coaching at all.

Jesus this is irritating. First it was the cap penalty and people were defending the Shanahan's this year. Then the report "leaked" out that Shanahan wanted to quit last year and about a 1/3 of the fanbase wanted him gone immediately. Then he benched Griffin in favor of Cousins and virtually everyone wanted him gone. Now people are ready to have him back as long as his staff his cleaned out? God I love this fanbase.

 some of us are not interested in just changing because we don't like the way Mike coaches or runs things

when I look at the big picture - who would I bring in here and at what cost - IMO the best thing for this franchise is to have Mike & this FO for another year

it's not about the money owed to Mike - it's about the amount of change that a new HC and maybe a new FO will bring

that is not the best thing for this franchise - we need some new coaches and maybe a new personnel/GM guy as this is not Mike or Bruce's strong suit

as far as Kyle is concerned the only question is if he and Robert have trust and a good relationship, I hope he stays
