Official 2013 Draft Thread

Post by Redskin in Canada »

No sense in starting this thread for the 1st day since we had no 1st round pick.

Let us recapitulate:

1 Eric Fisher Central Michigan OT Kansas City
2 Luke Joeckel Texas A&M OT Jacksonville
3 Dion Jordan Oregon OLB Miami from Oakland
4 Lane Johnson Oklahoma OT Philadelphia
5 Ezekiel Ansah Brigham Young DE Detroit
6 Barkevious Mingo LSU DE Cleveland
7 Jonathan Cooper North Carolina OG Arizona
8 Tavon Austin West Virginia WR St. Louis from Buffalo
9 Dee Milliner Alabama CB NY Jets
10 Chance Warmack Alabama OG Tennessee
11 D.J. Fluker Alabama OT San Diego
12 DJ Hayden Houston CB Oakland from Miami
13 Sheldon Richardson Missouri DT NY Jets From Tampa Bay
14 Star Lotulelei Utah DT Carolina
15 Kenny Vaccaro Texas S New Orleans
16 EJ Manuel Florida State QB Buffalo from St. Louis
17 Jarvis Jones Georgia OLB Pittsburgh
18 Eric Reid LSU S San Francisco from Dallas
19 Justin Pugh Syracuse OT NY Giants
20 Kyle Long Oregon OG Chicago
21 Tyler Eifert Notre Dame TE Cincinnati
22 Desmond Trufant Washington CB Atlanta from St. Louis via Washington
23 Sharrif Floyd Florida DT Minnesota
24 Bjoern Werner Florida State DE Indianapolis
25 Xavier Rhodes Florida State CB Minnesota From Seattle
26 Datone Jones UCLA DE Green Bay
27 DeAndre Hopkins Clemson WR Houston
28 Sylvester Williams North Carolina DT Denver
29 Cordarrelle Patterson Tennessee WR Minnesota from New England
30 Alec Ogletree Georgia ILB St. Louis from Atlanta
31 Travis Frederick Wisconsin OC Dallas from San Francisco
32 Matt Elam Florida S Baltimore

Some of the tempting picks in the next couple of rounds (2nd and 3rd) for the Redskins at CB, FS, and OT are contained in the following list. I have highlighted my hopes.

Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State
Jonathan Cyprien, FS, Florida International
Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
D.J. Swearinger, SS, South Carolina
Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State

Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
B.W. Webb, CB, William & Mary
J.J. Wilcox, FS, Georgia Southern
Dwayne Gratz, CB, Connecticut
Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
David Bakhtiari, OT, Colorado
David Quessenberry, OT, San Jose State
Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
Dallas Thomas, OT, Tennessee
Shamarko Thomas, SS, Syracuse
Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU
David Amerson, CB, North Carolina State

I acknowledge that I choose the players that I know but I have not researched all or others.

Good breakdown. Only thing I would change is that I would highlight Tyrann Mathieu & David Amerson. If we can land one of them. And, Swearinger, I'd kick my feet up and hope for Kenjon Barner en route to another NFC East title.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

Call me nuts, but I wouldn't rule out a wide receiver if the right one was available at 51. But safety is the glaring need, and if Cyprien somehow dropped in our laps, I'd be a very happy fan.

It's very unlikely that will happen though. I've been enthusiastic about Swearinger too, but for some reason, he's dropped down my imaginary draft board today, and I'm wondering whether Phillip Thomas would be a better fit for our needs. Thomas would seem to be a better cover safety and more suited to man centre field for us.

My personal favourites, in no particular order, would be:

Menelik Watson
Terron Armstead
Jonathan Cyprien
Robert Alford
Jamar Taylor
Terrance Wiliams
Markus Wheaton
Quinton Patton
Robert Woods

Not saying that I'd be unhappy if we didn't end up with any of these - there are others out there, but the guys above would all make a difference right now.

OT is a need but it would be tough to watch us pass up on potential starters for our defensive backfield. Long-term it might be the best play, depending on who is available. But it would hurt.

Just hoping we make a smart move. We can finally trust our FO to do that.

I like your list UK! I can't imagine some of those guys dropping to us, but you never know.

Can't wait to see who our newest Redskin will be tonight!!!

I know what you're saying. My opinion on the OT though is that anything we do to keep RGIII healthy and on the field is a good move. There is no DB who is going to win us as many games as a healthy RGIII will.

Ready for a surprise? An updated 2nd round mock draft has us taking Minter ILB from LSU as successor to London because he might be the best player available at 51!

Not my choice but it got me to think that it is not impossible

Is that Kiper's latest mock? The buffoon predicted that we'd pick Minter because (and I quote) we "have nobody to start alongside London". He appears to have entirely forgotten Perry Riley's existence.

Having said that, drafting Minter as a long term replacement (as opposed to a partner) for London wouldn't be an utterly ridiculous move. But it would be surprising.

The smart move is best player available from any position except QB. Safety is the one glaring weakness on the roster, but it's not the only place that we need help. It's strange that I'm more excited about this draft than many recent drafts, even though we have no first rounder. I think it's because this year's picks are putting some polish on a playoff squad. We're finally building from a position of strength, and it's exciting :-)

Are you kidding me? The jags have to fill every position and they choose a damn safety! Come on!
I know he got a pretty good zip on the ball. He has a quick release. . . once I seen a coupla' throws, I was just like 'Yeah, he's that dude.'"

Yeah I'm pretty frustrated too. Was beginning to have a lot of hopes for Cyprien. Many other talents though...we'll get ours soon.

Changing my last comment (didn't see yours), I'm curious if we'll trade up to snag Swearinger. Then again, there's a lot of talent that fits our needs still out there.

I wonder if this pick on Amerson is a reflection on how our FO sees Merriweather doing.

I've not been sold on him, just because of the difference in raw stats that different sources has on him.

SI: 6-3 / 194 / 40 Time: 4.55
CBS: 6-1 / 205 / 4.35

Most reviewers said he was excellent apart from speed, so I'll defer to that - if he IS quick, then good pick. If he's as slow as SI think, then he could struggle like the rest of our DBs against the long balls.
