Just looked at the Redskins squad by number. We all know that 33 is retired, but nobody wears:
- 9 (Sonny)
- 21 (Sean Taylor)
- 28 (Darrel Green)
- 42 (Charley Taylor)
- 43 (Larry Brown)
- 44 (John Riggins)
- 49 (Bobby Mitchell)
- 81 (Art Monk)
I can't remember another player wearing those unofficially retired numbers.
I think Shane Matthews wanted '9', but the equipment guy wouldn't give it to him. Said Matthews would have to ask Jurgensen. Sonny said he didn't care, but Matthews had the good sense to pick another number.

Re: Unofically retired numbers
I was always under the impression that 9 was retired. Didn't know these were unofficial. Strange.welch wrote:Just looked at the Redskins squad by number. We all know that 33 is retired, but nobody wears:

If nothing else, definitely 21...would be pretty painful to see another player in that jersey.

Shane Matthews actually appeared on the practice field wearing 9. Fans put a stop to it.welch wrote: I think Shane Matthews wanted '9', but the equipment guy wouldn't give it to him.
