RG3's knee - who do we really believe & trust here?

Post by SkinsJock »

THIS report is pre Sundays' game with the Seahawks

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nf ... y/1811689/

Based on a couple of reports in the media and now from Dr Andrews, it seems that somebody is stretching the truth or lying

I am not a fan of Mike Shanahan and never have been - great coach and even better GM/FO type but ... he's 'reportedly' a close friend of Bill Belicheat, who is perhaps an even bigger liar than Mike - but a liar is a liar and Mike is definitely one ...

Now while I think Mike Shanahan is a great HC - I just don't trust him - he's lied to us on many occasions and now we hear he may be lying about RG3's knee

We were informed by Mike that RG3's knee was almost back to 100% "according to the doctors"
now we're finding out that may not be the case

RG3 was brought here to play QB for many years, NOT just this season - IF Mike put that at risk by playing him with a knee brace that he said was "not really needed" and was "more supportive than protective" - then he took an unacceptable "risk" IMO

OR

maybe Dr Andrews is not being completely honest

this is an important game for our franchise but I hope Mike knows what he's doing and he's not letting RG3 risk a bigger injury to that knee

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

RGIII doesnt run as if it appears he is hurt, but rather as if he is limited by a bulky kneebrace. And if the knee is still hurt then why is RGIII requesting that the brace to be taken off.

If memory serves me correctly, John Elway wore a knee brace regularly for the later part of his career--worked out well for him. And, even hampered, RGIII is still more mobile than most. I expect a more efficient day like the one he had against Philly the 1st time.

Most important is that according to that article, Andrews now says RG3's knee has passed all functional tests, so it's effectively fine now.

I'd say Robert. Robert hasn't been honest with himself or the team about how badly he's hurting. Some players you must protect from themselves.

I think that has a lot to do with it. Reading the Post's live blog here, I see this:
Griffin, Shanahan said, will have an MRI to see whether there is damage beyond the lateral collateral ligament sprain he suffered Dec. 9. And Shanahan said he considered taking Griffin, whose effectiveness decreased after the first quarter, out with a healthy Kirk Cousins as an option.

“I did, I did [consider it],” Shanhan said. “I talked to Robert and Robert said to me, ‘Coach, there’s a difference between injured and being hurt. I guarantee you I’m hurting right now. Give me a chance to win this football game because I guarantee you I’m not injured.’

“That was enough for me. I thought he did enough for us this year to have that opportunity to stay in the football game. It’s always a tough decision when to pull a guy and when not to. I talked to him at halftime and had to feel good about him to go back in.”
That's a coach trusting his player to be honest with himself and his coach...and RG3 was not. Griffin is a tough kid, but he needs to realize at some point if he's hurting bad enough, playing him is actually bad for the team.

OK - and I guess that we can assume that the coach did in fact 'discuss' the injury with Dr Andrews ....

despite, what Dr Andrews said ....

there seems to be a lot of "failure to communicate" here

You would think with Dr. Andrews right there on the sideline that he would be telling Shanny too get him out of the game. You could see him standing right behind Shanny in a couple shots so I'm guessing he was in his a ear a few times. All I can say is I hope that knee heals up nice and healthy for a deep playoff run next year!!!!

Watch RGIII postgame press conference

This is what Shanahan got from RGIII. No lies. RG asked to play and he had earned it. He was not well be still wanted to play.

END OF STORY.

I think that any doubts about whether RB3's knee injury was being downplayed and sugar coated, must now be abandoned, as it was clearly an issue, and particularly after the re-injury in the 2nd Quarter, but was showing before that.

He should have been pulled at half time, and I find it outrageous that it had to come down to him being on the ground ... unable to get up, and physically unable to be on the field for that decision to make itself.

Shanahan claims that he listened to RG3, who promised he could continue, but we all saw him out there limping ... we saw the uncharacteristic misfires and inaccuracy from the 2nd Quarter to the end, and no doubt because he couldn't drive off that leg.

Given that we could barely do a thing on offense after the re-injury, the right call would have ben to put Cousins out there to start the second half. I think we would have won the game had that decision been made.

Here's a copy/paste from an online source about knee sprain degrees. Based on just observation from watching tv (and hopes), it doesn't seem that RG3 would have a 3rd degree sprain. Beyond that I won't speculate because I don't know anything about knee injuries.

Anyway here's what I found:

"In the knee, both sprains and strains are evaluated according to the amount of looseness (laxity or instability) and loss of function that they cause.

A first-degree injury stretches the ligament or muscle tendon unit, but does not cause significant structural damage or weakness. First-degree sprains are characterized by minimal swelling (edema), localized pain and tenderness, and no marked instability.

The individual with first-degree sprains may perform activities within the limits of pain tolerance without causing further damage to the knee.

A second-degree injury partially disrupts and weakens the ligament or muscle tendon unit. Second-degree sprains are characterized by partial tears, moderately localized pain and tenderness, and mild instability. The injured structure must be protected from stress for a period of about 6 weeks in order to prevent further injury.

A third-degree injury is one in which the ligament or muscle tendon unit is completely disrupted. Third-degree sprains exhibit complete tears, mild to pronounced edema, and clear instability. Third degree damage requires a long period of protection from stress and often surgical repair. "

I agree that we all need to move on

I also hope that the knee will NOT be an issue with RG3 going forward

no worries here - I'm very glad that nothing really bad happened

the only minor point I have is that Mike Shanahan and Dr Andrews seem to have very different recall of how things went down in Baltimore and then later

we've had a great season and I cannot wait to see this team defend the NFC East title next season with a fully rehabbed RG3

You know what they say about assumptions. It's better to just wait for the official word than speculate based on unsubstantiated reports.
