Redskins 68 pts is most thus far in League...

Post by tribeofjudah »

Wow, never thought that would happen....? Well, we have the young Stud at QB and it's happening folks.
Redskins much improved in the red zone

The Redskins are leading the NFL in scoring with 68 points and one of the reasons for that is that they are doing very well when they get into prime scoring territory.

The red zone and goal to go situations have been perennial issues for the Redskins. Last year they got touchdowns on just 41 percent of the time they got inside the opponents’ 20 yard line (ranking 29th in the NFL) and 56 percent of the time they got a first and goal to go (23rd).

This year, it’s so far, so much better. They have had possession in the red zone seven times and have scored five touchdowns. That comes to red zone efficiency rate of 71 percent, tied for fourth-best in the league.

And they are a perfect five for five in goal to go situations. Two rookies have been taking care of business there with Robert Griffin III throwing for one touchdown (to first-year player Aldrick Robinson) and running for two and Alfred Morris powering into the end zone from one and three yards out.

The Redskins may not keep up their current pace of scoring 34 points per game but if they can continue to finish off drives by scoring seven points instead of three they will almost certainly substantially boost last year’s anemic 18 points per game average.

We have the best offense we've had in years, and now the worst defense in years. Figures.

We'd better be able to keep scoring 30+ points a week to keep games close.

The Redskins were the 21st ranked defense in points allowed last season, but the 13th ranked in yards allowed.

While they are currently 1st in scoring, they are 27th in pts allowed and 28th in yards allowed this year so far.

Four of the Redskins last five games of 2011 saw the other teams score more than 30 points

That means they are now six out of the last seven allowing teams to score over 30 points

34-27 L - Patriots. 2011
23-10 W - Giants. 2011
33-26 L - Vikings. 2011
34-10 L - Eagles. 2011
40-32 W - Saints. 2012
31-28 L - Rams. 2012

The way I see it.. we've been so used to taking one step forward two steps back ... Finally with RGiii we have taken two steps forward on O and sadly have taken one step back on D. You have to factor in alllll the damn injuries to our backfield, and think maybe these new guys aren't as comfortable yet thus the questionable DC calls. But all in all we are making strides and I think they payoff will be big-time.

I find that stat about us being a really good yardage defense and I really bad scoring defense very interesting. I think are overall defense is overrated. with how bad are all since was, the opposing team always had a short field, meaning they needed West yards too score. Hmmm....

+ 1

We have to put it all together. And don't forget Special Teams. There was a time when the Skins were tops in all of the coverage units. And, the Red Snapper was one of the best long snappers in the game. At that time, the weak links were FG Kicker consistency (Novak, Suisham) , and punt returning with (Antwan Randle Fell).

Now we have a good punt returner, and decent Kicker. But we can't cover or protect.

You have to go way, way, way far out on a linn top call a 77% kicker that had virtually no shot at making any gil over 45 yards, decent.

I know you hated the guy he replaced, but he certainly is no upgrade.

That is why I wasn't upset with the josh morgan penalty. 47 or 62 yards it really didn't matter, Cundiff would have almost certainly missed either.
Although, 4th and two, MS may have gone for it.

MS said in his presser he would have gone for the 4th down had the penalty not happened. As for Cundiff, that's a stretch based on little facts. Not only has Cundiff had a Pro Bowl season to his credit, but he routinely kicks the ball out of the end zone without shanking it off some dude's beer on the sidelines.

He's also been 84% from 40-49 yards over the last 3 seasons, so I'm not sure what gave you the overwhelming lack of confidence that he would have made a 47 yarder.

He's 4/5 this season, with the only miss coming from 63 yards. He's also consistently given our offense the ball at the 20. BTW - Graham Gano is still unemployed. So, it's not as if the NFL was just waiting for us to cut him.

I think he meant he as consistently pinned their offense at their own 20. I think you knew that

He has also had three seasons where he was collecting unemployment! As far as the shanking kicks comments, you do know Gano was told to coffin corner kick those kicks, don't you? If he was off by a little, which most were, them the kick went out of bounds. Should he have been able to execute that kick - sure! Should Danny Smith stopped fraking asking him to kick a kick he had issues with - absolutely! That is why in the off season MS said they weren't going to screw around any more with fancy kicks, they were just going top kick the ball out of the back of the end zone. Gano is more than capable of doing that on every kick.

Going to look up and see what the nfl average is on kicks between 40 - 49 yards, I bet it is beyer than 84%

If Gano spend the rest of the season collecting unemployment, he has two more seasons to catch up with Cundiff's jobless streak.

Billy Cundiff is doing a better job than Gano did
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

So make that 7 out 8. It used to be if we could only score more than 20 Pts./game we would have had 10+ wins. Now if we could just keep teams under 30 Pts./game we'd have a good shot at 10+ wins. Weird.
