Looking towards the Rams

I'm watching the Rams-Lions replay on NFLN right now, and I have to say this defense looks tough. They picked off Stafford a bunch and were stout against the run.

What do you guys think about how we match up?

we were not supposed to be able to handle the Saints incredible offense

since time began there has not been an offense like the Saints offense of 2011

the Rams are not as good offensively

The rams defense is not bad but ....

Good question - thanks for the notes about the Rams defense.

I know we're favorites going into this game, and the Rams are struggling on offense. But I think Jeff Fisher is a really good coach personally. I'm expecting this to be a tough game. I hope the team isn't overlooking the Rams!

I think our D will stifle their O. We might see a spark or two but I think JF is over rated, and has a lot of work to do on building this team. The next two drafts should help but I don't think he's there yet. I didn't see the game but the lions have been rather wishy washy with Stafford.... So I hope it was a bad outting on his behalf and RGiii continues his success, as well as our whole team. Beating the saints was huge, we just need to stay grounded, play our game, and not play down to a team we can beat like we are known for. If we can ride the high and keep it going we can get off to a great start this season and who knows where we land...

Well, this game has me worried. I loved the Saints game but I am hesitant to think that the team has overcome its trend of winning games they should not and losing ones they should win. My heart says we roll but my brain, conditoned by the last 20 years says we struggle.

God I hope we win this game and Griffin plays well. If he throws a few picks and we lose, all this media hype over the Saints game will cause a serious backlash.

I'd be foolish to say that the Redskins will easily beat the Rams...

But there's a distinct difference between us and Detroit. Detroit is 1 dimensional. They have Fatty McFatterton at QB and they don't have a running game which is amazing considering how prolific their passing game is.

That being said, we have a more balanced approach. Morris started to get bigger and bigger runs as the game wore on. We have some decent WRs. And, we have a incredibly mobile QB. Where the Rams mostly had to be concerned about Calvin and their TE, they'll have to worry about the following players...

I'd agree with Chris - we have some areas of concern and we do not have very good depth - what we saw last week was a bunch of guys doing a good job together and a well prepared game plan for both the offense and defense

we are hopefully going to see more of the same each week but ...

this is not a team that is going to be able to do very well unless we have a good effort from the players and a great game plan from the coaches

I do think that the Rams will provide a tough test but if we can be balanced again we'll be able to get out of there with another win

Also, Robinson. I don't know how much we'll see him on the field at the same time as Garcon and Morgan, but his performance last weekend was excellent, and I think he'll be a weapon.

I agree that we've got more weapons and a more balanced approach. That should work in our favor. Can our defense rattle Bradford like they did last year? I think that will be key to taking over this game, just as getting to Brees was in the Saints game.

I'm still pretty tentative about looking at the Redskins as heavy favorites here. Week 1 couldn't have gone much better for us; can we keep that kind of momentum going? With a legit QB, it's possible.

I hear you FFA - this team is not deep enough to be considered "heavy favorites" against any other NFL team right now

we need for a lot of good things to happen for us to have a chance each week

AND

we need to avoid injuries

Here's another data point: This Grantland article (which has a nice look into some facets of Sunday's game), argues that the Saints defensive style was basically a best-case scenario for the Redskins offense.

Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan crafted a game plan that built upon each look he'd presented to the defense on previous plays, creating space for Griffin while remaining one step ahead of the competition. And that competition? Well, the Redskins couldn't ask for a much better defense to go up against playing this style of football than the Saints. The end result was a truly impressive offensive showing, but one that might struggle to reoccur in the coming weeks.

His thesis is that the offense Washington showed against the Saints won't be quite so successful against a more disciplined defense.

Of course, that wasn't the story line being proposed by, really, anyone going into the weekend, was it? All the commentary I saw said that the Saints would be fired up to avenge the league's punishment, that the Superdome was a terribly difficult place to win and that the Saints outmatched the Skins on both sides of the ball.

Also, while the Saints may not have the best/most disciplined defense in the league, they DO have one of the most potent offenses. While the new Skins offense may not be able to hang 40 points on a better defense, it just may not have to.

I don't see any indications of a trap game here. The Rams have proven able to hang a W on the Skins for several years... and now they have a real coach...

London Fletcher will NOT permit this team to let down this early in the season.

I expect it to be a much more competitive game than last week (without a QB of the quality of Brees, what would the score have been?), but the Redskins have more weapons than the Rams... so, unless Stephen Jackson goes total beast mode, slowing down the pass rush, and opening up big passing lanes for Bradford, I expect a win.

We should be concerned. However ...

"Detroit Lions' coach Jim Schwartz was 33 years old when he joined the Tennessee Titans as a defensive assistant in 1999."

Jeff Fisher knows Scwartz and Stafford very well. This helped the Rams a lot. He should not have the same edge this week.

No one has mentioned how fabled the Saints O-line is suppose to be, especially the interior. Our D line made them look average at best, not to mention shutting the run down quick and early. The Rams O will need to do a lot more then they have..
As for the Rams D, why are the still ranked 28th?? Probably because the still gave up over 400 yards regardless off the three ints.

Right? Plus, we're a perennially under-500 team. The mindset required for a trap game is that of a dominant team thinking they're above the other team.

The Rams gave up 346 yards pass yards.. Stafford threw some bad balls that were intercepted but still put up good numbers, BEING a pass happy team. With our super balanced attack, we should expose this D as weak (ranked 28th any way folks). Our D will crush Bradford and just needs to bottle SJacks.
We SHOULD win this game by an honest 24+ but.might be content w 10-17 points MORE then what they put up, if any at all.
