In a vacuum - elated.
It would all depend.
At one end of the spectrum, if he becomes a FA and we signed him relatively cheaply after the rest of the league showed less interest than expected and then he turned out to be healthy ... sa-weet.
At the other end, if we were to trade picks for him and assume his contract and on top of it all his neck weren't right ... OMFG.
49R fan seems to want him.
I'd be a little surprised if Harbaugh did that ... but someone will pay Alex Smith and it is likely to be a lot of money.
I think we should stay away from Manning (unless he's unrealistically cheap) and I predict we will stay away.

Don't think this will happen. Both Shanahan and Manning are control freaks. Can you imagine the first time Kyle calls a play and Manning changes it?
But to answer the question, no don't think this is a good idea. To much risk. Even if he gets clearance to play, one good hit and he could be done. Also, Manning is not gong to come cheap in his salary demands. Remember, he is due $28 Million from, the Colts. He will want that much at least. As for everyone not having much interest, also not going to happen. The Jets, Vikings, Raiders, Bucaneers, Jaguars, Seahawks all have quarterback needs. One of them will pay him what he wants.

Yeah, I don't think it will happen either, I just wanted to see just how pro or anti the fanbase are to the prospect.
Having said that, nothing surprises me with Synder & co, a chance to meddle again may be too tempting, he could see this as a great way to grab headlines again...
No, what am I saying, not gonna happen, end of!!!

I think this control freak thing is over blown! Kyle had a QB that changed plays at the LoS. Grossman did it many times this year and they were fine with it.aswas71788 wrote:Don't think this will happen. Both Shanahan and Manning are control freaks. The only coach I know of that we have had, in the past say 30 years, that didn't allow audibles was Norv. There wasn't one audible called during Norv's seven years in DC and I don't think he let Rivers call audibles either (not sure on that one, because I don't watch enough SDC games).
If the Skins went out and got Peyton, they could make it work. First, it's Peyton Manning and he gets a lot more wiggle room than Grossman, Beck or even McFlab. Second, Peyton wouldn't go any place he idn't feel he could work with the coaching staff.

No doubt man. I'm sure John Elway never changed a play at the line. Where do people come up with these crazy theories about the Shanahans' personalities?skinsfan#33 wrote:I think this control freak thing is over blown! Kyle had a QB that changed plays at the LoS. On Mike and Mike this morning Mortensen said that Manning was cleared for contact back in December and that he would not be risking a serious neck injury by playing (outside of the risk that all NFL players take). The issue, according to him, is the nerves in his triceps regenerating/fusing. He further said that having that surgery in September, as opposed to May when he had the other surgery, is what's been the hold-up in his recovery. The Hogster wrote:Even if he's cleared to play, he has a neck injury. I represent NFL players, and one of my guys had a similar neck problem. Marcus McNeil of the SD Chargers. You can be cleared to play all you want. But, if you take another hit to the discs that were fused in the first place, you are right back at square one. It's not the same risk that all NFL players take because once you've sustained a neck injury like this one, you are at a much higher propensity to re-sustain an injury like that.CanesSkins26 wrote:On Mike and Mike this morning Mortensen said that Manning was cleared for contact back in December and that he would not be risking a serious neck injury by playing (outside of the risk that all NFL players take). Peyton has had 3 surgeries on this neck injury alone. To say that he'd be at the same risk level of any other NFL player is just false. In fact, the guarantees against Skill & Injury in his contract will have injuries to his neck/spine excluded much like we had to do for McNeil.

Chris Mortenson is like the Glenn Beck of sports journalism. He's more of a talking head than anything. Once you sustain an injury to a certain part of the body, you're susceptible to re-injury. That's just science, so I don't know why Mort would think your neck & spine are any different.
The only player that I have been around who sustained a serious neck injury, and didn't re-injure it was Kelley Washington the stud WR out of Tennessee who was a sure 1st round pick who went 3rd round & ultimately became a journeyman WR.
