Roster Battles: Inside Linebacker

Does Rocky McIntosh have a spot on the 2011 version of the Redskins?

London Fletcher (NC/10): London was London Friday night, a complete animal and all over the place in his brief time with the first unit.

Lorenzo Alexander (DOWN/9): This has nothing to do with LoAx's performance, but is there a small chance a younger guy can take his place? He's the ultimate swiss army knife for Mike Shanahan, but you never know...

Perry Riley (DOWN/8): Once again, nothing to do with his performance rather the addition of several other linebackers to the competition. Riley didn't wow anyone, but he did look solid and could be our starter opening day.

Keyaron Fox (UP/5): Fox looked the most comfortable with his position out of the reserve ILB. I've said this before this week, but he reminded me of Albert Fincher who was a preseason stud for the Skins a couple of years back. Nevertheless, Fox has quite an uphill battle to crack this roster.

BELOW THE CUT-LINE

Rocky McIntosh (DOWN/5): Rocky looked out of place Friday night, frankly I'm still shocked we resigned him and he agreed to it. He just doesn't seem to fit the system, but could be a dark horse for opening day starter.

H.B. Horatio Blades (DOWN/4): Blades' story echos that of Rocky's, why is he back? He looked out of place and was very underwhelming Friday.

Obi Ezeh (NC/2) and Eric McBride (DOWN/2): Don't remember seeing either Friday night (maybe a little of Ezeh?). But I'd like to see what both could do. McBride is officially listed as a OLB, but I really think this kid could crack a NFL roster as a ILB somewhere.

I only watched Rocky for a couple of plays last Friday. He did look out of place on those two plays.

I saw Keyaron Fox filling gaps like he supposed too. I didn't see Zo play Inside. Did anyone see him?

Roster Battles: Cornerback

Here is how the race stands now:

DeAngelo Hall (NC/10): Hall almost got beat deep courtesy of Mike Wallace, but he showed his spunk and grit and getting into with Maurkice Pouncey

Josh Wilson (UP/9): Wilson also nearly got burnt also, but he was pretty solid the rest of his time in the game. He showed he should be the starter opposite of DHall.

Kevin Barnes (DOWN/7): Nothing to do with Barnes' performance just the added competition. I thought Barnes looked impressive in Phillip Buchanon's normal role at nickle, he got to Roethlisberger once and then London Fletcher came in to finish him off.

Phillip Buchanon (*): Buchanon didn't play, likely because of his suspension, but I still expect him to have a roster spot.

Reggie Jones (UP/5): Jones really impressed me in the second half and was one of the few reserve DBs to register a tackle.

BELOW THE CUT LINE

Byron Westbrook (NC/4): Westbrook was underwhelming on Friday and needs to step it up to remain a Redskin.

Brandyn Thompson (DOWN/2): Was hoping to see more of #40 Friday, maybe we'll see more versus the Colts this week.

Dante Barnes (NC/2): The former Norfolk State Spartan has his work cut out for him to make the team.

I like Reggie Jones to beat out Westbrook.

Where is Gomes? Is he a safety and not a corner? That kid was all over the place last Friday.

The Redskins' roster locks

Defense

DL Stephen Bowen, Adam Carriker, Barry Cofield, Jarvis Jenkins—This is your main rotation and it could well be an effective one.

LB’s Ryan Kerrigan, London Fletcher, Lorenzo Alexander, Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley—Both Rocky McIntosh and Keyaron Fox both were close to being in this group but one could end up knocking the other off the roster. Riley gets another year to develop and he could end up starting at some point.

DB’s Oshiomogho Atogwe, DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Reed Doughty, LaRon Landry, Kevin Barnes—The starters are set but there is a lot of competition behind them.

Gomes is definitely part of the competition

Roster Probables:

DL Anthony Bryant, Kedric Golston—There is a slim chance that rookie Chris Neild beats out Bryant for the backup nose tackle job. Nobody appears to be an immediate threat to Golston’s job but they could choose to bring in another DE from the outside.

DB Phillip Buchanon—He is close to a lock but no marginal player who will be suspended for the first four games of the season is truly secure.

LB’s Keyaron Fox, Rob Jackson, Rocky McIntosh—Injuries at other positions could make the coaches choose between McIntosh and Fox so one could be in danger. Jackson is getting pushed by rookie Markus White.

Recent signing of LB T Gibson has got to make a couple of LBs VERY nervous and hopeful of making a very good impression and maybe keeping their job

The better we are up front the better we are going to be defensively - a good secondary does not make up for deficiencies in the front 7
HOWEVER a good front 7 helps an OK secondary look pretty good

Rich Campbell on Perry Riley:

I enjoy watching ILB Perry Riley track the ball. His closing speed is exceptional, and he’s a hard hitter when he gets there. His tackle on the Redskins‘ first kickoff was highlight-reel stuff. His run fit was great on RB Jarvarris James’ 2-yard carry in the second half. On the first play of the fourth quarter, he diagnosed the screen pass to RB Delone Carter and ran up from 10 yards away to stop him for a gain of 1.

It would be interesting to see Riley play more with the first string, as his future with the team seems more secure than Rocky McIntosh‘s. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett indicated during training camp that Riley still needs more seasoning. But how’s this for an accountability-free prediction? Riley is in the starting lineup by November.

Why did we re-sign Rocky?

Ryan O'Halloran's Defensive Predictions

DEFENSE

DL (7): Barry Cofield, Stephen Bowen, Adam Carriker, Jarvis Jenkins, Kedric Golston, Anthony Bryant and Darrion Scott.
Analysis: How much better does this group look compared with last year in terms of how they play in the 3-4 defense? Teammates and coaches are already saying Cofield is better than they originally thought – and they’re right. Bowen is an every-down player, and Carriker had a full off-season (not rehabilitation) of training. And there’s good depth. Jenkins could turn into a second-round steal and is a future starter, Golston has starting experience, and Bryant did fine as a reserve nose tackle toward the end of last season.

LB (8): London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan, Keyaron Fox, Lorenzo Alexander, Perry Riley and Rob Jackson.
Analysis: The starting quartet of Fletcher, McIntosh, Orakpo and Kerrigan is set. Fox and Riley are the back-ups inside (meaning Horatio Blades, as he predicted earlier in camp via Twitter, is a long shot), and Alexander provides too much on special teams and knows too many positions to be expendable. The last spot could turn into a competition between Jackson and newcomer Thaddeus Gibson for the final outside linebacker spot. Jackson worked with the starters earlier in camp when Kerrigan was banged up, and Gibson just arrived from San Francisco. Jackson’s knowledge of the scheme gives him the edge, and Gibson is eligible for the practice squad.

CB (5): DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Kevin Barnes, Byron Westbrook and Brandyn Thompson. Suspended list: Phillip Buchanon.
Analysis: Thompson appeared on my radar with his interception against Indianapolis and the praise he got from defensive coordinator Jim Haslett – without his being asked about the rookie draft pick. The same goes for Barnes and Westbrook. For the first four games, the Redskins have to make do without Buchanon, but he hasn’t played much (if at all) in the first two preseason games, and Barnes and Westbrook have done fine. A ton of youth at this position and it will be Hall’s job to lead them.

S (4): LaRon Landry, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Reed Doughty and Chris Horton. PUP list: Kareem Moore.
Analysis: Moore doesn’t appear close to practicing, much less playing, so stashing him on the physically unable to perform list for the first six weeks (knee injury) is the prudent move. Horton is another player I didn’t have on the roster entering camp, but he has gotten big-time experience playing with the starters. Doughty has a new three-year contract, so he’s not going anywhere. Landry and Atogwe haven’t played a snap together (practice or games), so this will be trial under fire when the Giants come to town in a few weeks. Again this year, a position of strength – look for DeJon Gomes to be put on the practice squad.
