I sat in the seat directly behind Clinton at a National's game this summer. I got the chance to talk with him and observe how he handled himself in public. I know that he has said some crazy things to the media, but in person, he is a class act. He was humble ( believe it or not) and cordial to everyone who asked for an autograph or take picture with him and when he would join in our conversations, he acted like any other fan.
Yes, I am biased when I say, I would like to see Clinton for one last season in a Redskin uniform. He would have to take a huge pay cut and once he tests the market, he will be more than willing to do it.
I remember Keiland Williams telling the story of how Clinton came down to the sideline to cheer for him for his first start. In the Tenessee game, Clinton showed that he still had some life in his legs. He is an excellent pass blocker and a "coach" on the field. Does all of his upside, outweigh having a younger guy in the wings developing? Probably not, but like I said, I am biased having met him, so I am sticking to hoping for one more year with Clinton. Shanahan's comments have left the door open for him unlike his comments on McNabb, so I think Clinton has a chance to be back.

I for one have always been a fan of Portis ... He has always played his heart out when healthy.. and has been one of the best Redskins RBs in history whether people want to admit it or not..

It will be tough to see him go .. deep down Im hoping he resigns because Im not ready to retire my CP jersey just yet

Champ Bailey was not coming back to DC either way... it was a matter of lose him and get nothing, of lose him and get an excellent starting RB for 7 years...

No offense to Portis, whose great record as a Redskin doesn't need to be defended . . . but we've heard that line more than once in the past. IMO he was done before Shanny got here. Even though I still like him and remember his days here fondly, I can't say that I see him having a place on our roster in the fall. He's not going to come back for the vet minimum or anything close to it, because some team somewhere is going to give him something much closer to what he wants.

Wow...how soon we forget! Ports is a true Redskin, who played his heart out for us here in Washington. He is still a top ten back in this league and I hope to goodness he restructures and signs with the team he should re-tire with!

Yeah I agree with that last post about Portis being a true Redskin. I think its a little unfair to dog him for being injured. If he is truly broke down now, its a result of the pounding he took playing his @** off for this team. Let's show him some respect and appreciation as he moves on.

That said, there is no question that this is the right move. You can't justify paying that kind of money to CP no matter how great he has been in the past. Its just another sign that we've got grown ups in the front office right now.

No one forgot ICEMAN, he'll always be a Skin for sure and I'll always keep wearing his jersey.. however, he has been on the decline for the last couple of years and that includes when he's healthy. Is he our best blocker, absolutely he is.. is he a great teammate to always cheer for his guys, absolutely he is.. but he's become very injury prone and to be honest I'm not sure I even want him on the team to take up that roster spot. Love him to death as a Skin but we need that spot in order to get younger guys back there. Look, I'm pretty loyal to our team but that's been our problem for MANY YEARS- keeping players past their time or even bringing in players in the same regard. Its time for us to get younger all around and that includes the RB position.

For one thing, he averaged 4.2 yards per carry last year and 11 yards per reception. Is he an every down back? No. Can he be effective in a rotation, similar to how LT was used by the Jets? I think so.

Before the Hamstring tear I thought Portis looked good. He was busting off some good runs. He looked a lot faster than I've seen in previous years. I don't think he can stay healthy enough to be a #1 back, but I would like to see what he can do as a 3rd down back. His pass blocking is still the best in the league IMO.

If Portis would be happy to be a third down back, and to be paid like one, then he still has skills. Personally, I haven't seen anything in his make-up that would suggest he'd be willing to be anything other than top dog, and to be paid like it.

As a starter, he appears to be done.

He hasn't looked anything "portis-like" in the past 2 years. His performance drop off is like a cliff, I think he was hurt a lot and tried to come back too early too often and ended up re injuring. This may be the reason why he is not what he used to be. I still think he has a lot of football left in him, I wish him the best in his endeavors but I really wish he'd restruct and wear B&G next year. =)

His first five years he had an above averag OL and was very good. His OL for the last two years has been WAY below average and it has shown in CP's production.

With that said, I think CP has hit that age, like 150,000 on a sports car, where you just have to expect him to be in the garage a lot. He might be able to stillbe effective from time to time, but don't cou nt on him for more than 8 out of 16 games.

That's just stupid. How hard is it for people to understand that Champ wasn't coming back to the Skins, no matter what. There were both personal and football issues involved, and the Skins had no choice but to trade him. Portis played his heart out for the team and single-handedly carried us to the playoffs, without complaining when Gibbs literally ran him into the ground.
