What will the Skins do about the TE position???
Well, we had two young safteys and old tight ends... it only made sense to take a young tight end in this draft... but we screwed up.
Now we are stuck with two 33 year old tight ends... What are we going to do? We don't have a good enough TE to start in the NFL.
Instead of stretching the defense with an rare TE like Kellen Winslow Jr we will have problems with Ramsey, Coles, Gardner and Portis... we could have been a top 5 offense with Winslow, now we will be lucky to be in the top ten... unless we do SOMETHING

Tight end won't be the most utilized position on our offense so we may either draft a tight end or sign an undrafted free agent. Don't forget that Gibbs (along with Bobby Beatherd's help) knows how to find hidden gems AFTER the draft.
We also have Brian Kozlowski who is not a pushover. He is a ten year veteran who brings skil and experience. Also don;t forget that we have 5 tight ends on the roster. We have a couple of young guys who can develop under Gibbs, too. (Ware and Royal).

so, our whole season is shot as of now then right? gibbs may as well retire now too, right? i mean it was williams who did this too us?
i agree, we should just forfiet the season. why the heck would we want to solidify our defense? everyone should just throw all their B&G stuff in the garbage and root for cleveland.

Can I hold you to that?
Regarding the naysayers about Champ's departure, I think Taylor is a great pick to give the Skins the defense we need against next year's NFC East. K2 would have been a good pick as well, but our firepower on offense should already be big.
What's done is done...accept Taylor and watch K2 struggle with the poops.
Not taking Winslow is not going to kill us. Gibbs is building this team as he built them in the 80's (even though I think Taylor was a bad pick) Gibbs will look for more of a blocking tight end ala Warren of the 80's and I will say Winslow was not the blocking type. He has his two receivers got his RB from Denver Can we say Monk, Brown, Riggins and Theisman. Or the 2004 version Coles, Gardner, Portis and Ramsey. I can see the mirror Gibbs is using.

to tel ya that truth i liked both of them but in the end sean taylor was my choice since they didn,t trade down.
gibbs uses blocking schemes more than passing schemes with his te,s anyways.to add to that joe gibbs wanted both of them .
i,m glad to see sean in burgundy and gold myself.defense is what they need to keep looking at.and i wouldn,t mind to see them move around with those other selections either.

sf55... what's the deal?
Who cares how good Winslow is... so you're telling me that even though Winslow is obviously a great player, Gibbs knows the family well, Gibbs is obviously running the show and STILL picked Taylor... you personally know this was a bad decision.
Ok man.
Of course Winslow's a great player, but were you even old enough to watch football when Gibbs was using 'no name' tight ends like Doc Walker and Donnie Warren and Clint Didier to pulverize defenses?
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt of just not understanding what a tight end does in this offense.
And in my opinion... we have too many other weapons that SUIT the offense to go changing the whole thing just to work a more 'offensive' role in for the tight end.
Joe Gibbs offense CENTERS AROUND taking as many plays as possible to get to the end zone... it's just a logic some of you are going to have to get used to. The offense doesn't ever look to a 15 yard pass... it looks for a 5 yard pass... every time they run a passing play. When the defense cheats into the box... they throw a 40 yard play. That's how the offense works. There isn't even anything in the playbook to take advantage of Winslow's obvious abilities.
Sure he's going to be an impact player for a long time, and will always be easy to point to stats and say... see, we could have had this guy... but Sean Taylor just took the 2004 secondary to a new level... not because he accounts for the loss of Bailey... but because he gives us a real safety that will strike fear into the hearts of opposing receivers.
This whole downer deal and doom for the rest of eternity because we didn't pick Winslow is pretty lame IMO. We got a great player. That deserves to be celebrated whether there was another great player or not... the Washington Redskins just got better... what else matters?

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.
Well said BH. But on another note you have to remember that the staff did their homework on both of these guys. They watched every single tape available of both of these guys entire careers at UM. That is hours and hours of tape for each player. In the end it was close but obviously they saw the most promise in Taylor.
Dude you are crazy if you think our offense is now a top ten if were lucky. Come on...Coles, Brunell/Ramsey, Gardner, McCants, and most importantly CLINTON PORTIS. We have enough weapons on offense. JUST RELAX!

If the Redskins had taken Winslow, there's NO CHANCE he would have played the tight end position on this team.
None.
Nada.
Zippo.
Having Winslow play the tight end position in the Redskins offense is as big a mistake that was possible.
But to answer the question about what are they gonna do ... they have Sellers, Cartwright and/or Royal to play the H-back/pass-catcher tight end -- and then Kozlowski and Rasby to play the true, stay at home and block tight end.

I agree with BH. Our D just got ***WAY*** better! Heck, I don't miss Chump any more! He can go to Denver with his ME attitude and we won't miss him a bit. As has already been stated, Gibbs excelled at finding rough gems in TEs and he'll do it again. We have some real talent at that position already. Winslow would have been great, but we took the better player available at the time!

What are we going to do? Absolutely nothing. Our D has been completely overhauled and that's what wins championships. I, as a lot of you know, am a great ChAmp supporter, but understood the decision that Coach made. To pick up Taylor makes that a whole lot easier to swallow. I know that Winslow is a great player, but to me it's obvious that Taylor is a more important fit to this already improved defense. I can't wait to see the impact that our new safety will have.
Opening day won't get here soon enough.

I think Winslow would have been a WR in the Gibbs offense. Winslow is no great fan of blocking, at least from what little I've heard. Gibbs expects everyone to block, even WR's, but especially his two TE's: the blocking TE (Don Warren) or the pass-catching H-back (Clint Didier, for example).
Of course, one big mistake would be to assume that Gibbs will run the exact same offense, same plays, same player-styles at each position. Gibbs reviews and thinksm reviews and thinks, and tinkers, and modifies, and adapts.
Who was the best coach, all time, at second half adjustments? Yes, Dan Snyder hired him as head coach this year. And I have immense respect for Walsh and Parcells. Maybe Walsh is, as he tells everyone, a genius. Certainly, the 49's were a shade better than the Redskins throught the '80s and early '90s...
But no coach made adjustsments like Gibbs. That was one of the most painful and noticeable differences when Norv Turner got control: his teams faded. Spurrier? Not even worthy to be compared with Turner.
Incidentally, let's note that Gibbs's teams are among the best in the last month of a season: which means that he refines the play in-season, and his teams increase in intensity.
So...the above paragraph is a sudden thought: maybe we shouldn't expect an exact replica of the old system.
