DT-Grady Jackson from ATL Released?
ATLANTA -- In a surprising move, the Atlanta Falcons released 11-year veteran nose tackle Grady Jackson on Tuesday.
Grady Jackson
Jackson
Jackson, who had started in all 23 games since signing with the franchise as an unrestricted free agent in 2006, has long been regarded as one of the NFL's top interior defenders against the run.
No explanation was given for the release, but sources said Atlanta coaches felt that Jackson was not playing the scheme prescribed for him and was freelancing too much.
The abrupt release of Jackson, who physical presence and ability to demand double-team blocking helped improved the Falcons' run defense in 2006, ends a brief but tumultuous relationship between the team and the player.
In March, Jackson, upset over his contract status, sued the Falcons for defamation and invasion of privacy, claiming team officials had leaked information to the media about the physical examination he took with the club in 2006. Jackson charged that the negative information, which suggested he might have a heart condition, scared off other potential suitors who might have considered signing him.
The lawsuit was eventually resolved and the Falcons reworked Jackson's contract, adding a year to the deal he originally signed in 2006 and providing him a mechanism to earn more money. Under the new deal, the Falcons paid Jackson a $250,000 signing bonus and a roster bonus of $250,000, in addition to his $1 million base salary for 2007.
Jackson, 35, was under contract through 2009, at base salaries of $1 million each year and with roster bonuses of $2 million in the spring of 2008 and 2009.
Although he is a vested veteran, Jackson is subject to waivers claims, since the league's trade deadline has passed. Teams may be reluctant to assume his current contract, but if Jackson clears waivers his run-stuffing ability could make him an attractive free agent for teams seeking tackle help over the second half of the season.
Few players can clog the inside like Jackson and, even at his age, he is still effective.
In 146 career games, Jackson has 440 tackles, 33½ sacks, eight forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and 26 pass deflections.
The former Knoxville College star began his career with the Oakland Raiders and played there for five seasons (1997-2001). He has also had stints with New Orleans (2002-03), Green Bay (2004-05) and the Falcons (2006-07).
Atlanta, which ranks 22nd in the league in defense versus the run, is expected to move rookie Trey Lewis, a sixth-round pick who has played well in filling in at both tackles spots this year, into the starting lineup.

IMO I know that he could be an starter only cause of his run stopping ability but I like A.Montgomery so far but this guy can help us in rotation or possibly end up starter to help are DL.

The DL is not the problem but hes an good back up situation I mean? what if the O sucks again and the D is tired?.Than the DT's are all tired and will have this guy to fill in or rotate in run stoppes.Champsturf wrote:Am I missing something? Is our D that bad? I think even attempting to get him would be retarded. If we were going to go out and get a lineman, I sure don't think it would be on that side of the ball. Sheesh
You never know good DL guys like that wouldn't hurt at all but what if Goldston and A.Mogonmery or Griffin gets injured?.

If our OLine was heathly, I would be onboard with this, but it's in shambles. If we need depth, it's on the OLine. I see what you're trying to say, but I disagree completely.por-tiz2skins wrote:The DL is not the problem but hes an good back up situation I mean? what if the O sucks again and the D is tired?.Than the DT's are all tired and will have this guy to fill in or rotate in run stoppes.Champsturf wrote:Am I missing something? Dear por-tiz2skins,
You are looking for players, almost any players at several positions, past the trade deadline and in complete disregard for the financial situation and several other existing player considerations. You were predicting a Super Bowl after the game against Detroit. Now, key changes are needed or we are doomed to fail.
Let us be clear: We win or we lose -WITH- the players we have HERE and NOW.

Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

You just don't understand, RIC. Every time a player is released we have to have a new thread entitled "What about signing this loser?" Otherwise, whatever would we talk about?

Oh look... it's another 'we have to add this guy' post from por-tiz2skins that has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
What a shock.
If you're keeping count, that's:
DeAngelo Hall, apparently we can trade for him and not consider pesky things like salaries
Larry Fitzgerald, see above notes
Quentin Moses
Claude Terrell
Grady Jackson
Chad Johnson (in fairness, that wasn't his idea but he couldn't pass up an opportunity to play fantasy football anyway)
Oh and trade Daniels to the Bears for Alex Brown.
... and those are just the ones that I remember from the last few weeks.
Not to mention that we were supposed to jettison our entire secondary and cut all our old guys to make Cap money...
Drivel... pure drivel.
What a shock.

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

I logged in, I saw the headline on NFL.com, I knew what was coming when I checked into THN. (And yes, you're right - I do usually go to THN before nfl.com).
And there it is, another huge steaming smelly brown pile of a thread dedicated to another player who just happens to be alive. Still, at least this one is actually available.

Okay, everyone. Look at Champsturf's post, and then look at BossHog's post. Which looks like "attacking the post" and which looks like "attacking the poster"?
Anyway, Grady Jackson was a good player for a long time in GB, and he certainly wasn't what was wrong with Atlanta's defense. I even think he got an incredibly raw deal from Atlanta that reflects terribly on the entire Falcons organization. But he's old and he's slow and can't generate a pass rush. He's a poor fit for the Skins' defense (stopping the run so far hasn't been a problem), and given the O-line situation (specifically keeping Thomas off of IR), there's not a lot of room for luxury picks anymore.

1 attacks the post and the other attacks the hypothetical situation of the F/O acquiring the player... That would make your post inaccurate. My last sentence was an attack of the post, FYI.

The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!

Apparently you have trouble reading, so let me help out. Boss attacked the comments of P2S, not P2S himself. All he said was that the post was drivel. What is so difficult to understand?

Taylor and Landry will take no Prisoners!! - I just can't bring myself to delete it!

OK everyone, look at this post (the one I am writing right now), and the one above it. Which one of us has a Staff title and which one does not? Hmmmmmm ... like we've told other people, repeatedly, when something needs to be moderated, we'll do it. But thanks for nothing all the same.
RIP Sean Taylor

We have other pressing needs but this is a good player. We can also use him as trade bait if needed.
If teams are not willing to pick him up as a FA, then why would they trade for him?

Jags close to signing free agent
The Jaguars appear to be close to signing free agent nose tackle Grady Jackson to a one-year deal, according to coach Jack Del Rio.
An 11-year veteran, Jackson was released by the Atlanta Falcons after starting in 22 of 23 games after signing with the club in 2006. Like Jags defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson, Jackson is considered one of the league’s top interior defenders.
He arrived in Jacksonville today at 2:30 p.m.
"We hope to get him signed today," Del Rio said. "He'll help us with depth."
The Jags contacted Jackson's agent, Angelo Wright, Sunday night after their 24-23 win over Tampa Bay. There seemed to be a sense of urgency on the part of the Jags, according to Wright, who instinctively thought there is "something is going on" that piqued the club's interest in his client.
"You've got a premier run stopper who you can't knock off the block," said Wright of Jackson. "You can't run on the guy."
Jackson has posted 440 tackles, 33 1/2 sacks, eight forced fumbles and 26 pass deflections in 146 career games with Oakland, New Orleans, Green Bay and Atlanta. The acquisition of Jackson gives the Jags a savvy veteran they can plug into the starting lineup while experiencing very little dropoff.

Grady Jackson is a good player. He will be picked by someone. He was also leading the Defensive line in tackles. The reason he was cut because Bobby Petrino believes he does not fit the system.
